Willie Martinez details transfer Jermod McCoy during spring practices

Tennessee secondary coach Willie Martinez details Oregon State transfer Jermod McCoy during spring practices.

Sophomore defensive back Jermod McCoy committed to Tennessee in Dec. 2023.

The 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback appeared in 11 games for Oregon State during the 2023 regular-season. He recorded 31 tackles, two interceptions, seven pass deflections and one fumble recovery last season with the Beavers.

Tennessee secondary coach Willie Martinez discussed McCoy after the Vols’ seventh spring practice.

“Jermod’s different than the other two transfers or really anybody, he never played defense,” Martinez said. “He was an athletic kid in high school and was recruited to the school that he chose to be a wide receiver. They actually made the flip and asked him to go play defense, and he did a great job. That conference was loaded with great players, quarterbacks and receivers that he went up against. We saw the athleticism. That’s the one thing that we saw, is that he can do a lot of things. To the point that was just said, is that he’s not even close to being there development-wise.

“He’s learning the game from a defensive standpoint, but he has confidence, ball skills and all types of athleticism. He understands leverage, and I think his training as an offensive player helps him understand defense too. He knows how he is going to be attacked. Those are really good qualities to have when you get moved over. He’s going against a position that he lined up against, so it’s a great combination. He is nowhere near. He played a lot of match and a lot of man where he came from. We are very multiple on defense. Getting to learn all of the different types of zone coverages is a challenge for him. He’s doing a good job in the first seven practices. He had a really good scrimmage.”

Report: Former Oregon State CB Jermod McCoy is set to announce his transfer destination

Former Oregon State CB Jermod McCoy will reportedly announce his transfer destination on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

After landing standout cornerback Will Lee Jr. as Texas A&M’s first commitment from the transfer portal, new head coach Mike Elko requires more additions in the secondary, but a recent pledge from former Central Michigan safety Trey Jones provided even more cushion.

With the early signing period set to begin on Wednesday, the Aggies are poised to continue adding more talent on both sides of the ball, but staying at cornerback, former Oregon State CB Jermod McCoy, who recently took a visit to College Station last weekend, will reportedly announce his commitment on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

According to AggiesToday, McCoy will reportedly choose between Texas A&M and the Tennessee Volunteers, as his collegiate playing career will continue in the SEC no matter what.

Jermod McCoy is the 5th-ranked cornerback in the transfer portal rankings and is coming off his impressive 2023 freshman season within one of the best defenses in the country, recording 31 tackles, two interceptions, and seven pass deflections on the year. Paired with Lee, McCoy would give the Aggies a solid 1-2 punch in the secondary.

Oregon State transfer CB Jermod McCoy is set to visit Texas A&M next weekend

Looking to add starting experience to the secondary, Texas A&M and HC Mike Elko will host former Oregon State CB Jermod McCoy next weekend.

New Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has hit the ground running, focused on adding productive players from the transfer portal to counter the losses the roster has already sustained.

Focused on the cornerback position, 2023 starting CBs Tyreek Chappell and Deuce Harmon have both entered the portal, as the Aggies’ secondary will presumably lose five players in the secondary, including senior cornerback Josh DeBerry and senior safety Demani Richardson.

Elko has already secured a commitment from former Kansas State CB Will Lee III, and AggiesToday has now reported that former Oregon State cornerback Jarmon McCoy will follow in Lee’s footsteps and visit Elko and his staff on Friday, Dec. 15.

Just below Will Lee, McCoy is the 5th-ranked cornerback in the transfer portal rankings and is coming off his impressive 2023 freshman season within one of the best defenses in the country, recording 31 tackles, two interceptions, and seven pass deflections on the year. Paired with Lee, McCoy would provide the Aggies with a solid 1-2 punch in the secondary.

Here are 5 transfer portal targets Florida football should be looking at

Here are five transfer portal targets that would fit in well with Billy Napier and the Florida Gators in 2024.

College football’s transfer portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 4, to kick off the amateur sport’s version of free agency. As has been the case in recent years, the list of student-athletes who have entered the portal is both long and features some game-changing talent seeking a better chance elsewhere.

Billy Napier and the Florida football program have both benefitted and seen losses through the transfer system in the past, though this season has already seen some big names heading out the door — including future-star running back Trevor Etienne.

But fear not, Gator fans, as there are plenty of viable options available to help restock a diminished cupboard of talent. Gators Wire alumnus Jay Markle takes a look at five players who might not be at the top of every team’s wish list but fit in well with Napier and Co.’s scheme in Gainesville.

Gators offer Oregon State defensive back in transfer portal

The Florida Gators are in the market for a defensive back or two, and former Oregon State cornerback Jermod McCoy fits the bill.

It is transfer portal season in college football, and the Gators have eyed former Oregon State cornerback [autotag]Jermod McCoy[/autotag] as a potential fit for the program.

McCoy tweeted out that Florida had offered him on Tuesday, adding to a list that features Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Houston, Louisville, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Oregon, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, USC, Utah, Washington and West Virginia.

During his true freshman season, McCoy recorded 31 tackles, seven pass breakups, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Florida’s secondary failed to produce turnovers this season. Adding McCoy would change that instantly.

He has three years of eligibility remaining, making him one of the more attractive defensive backs in the class.

On3 ranks McCoy 11th among cornerbacks in the transfer portal this cycle, giving SMU and Texas A&M the best odds to sign him. He’s a three-star talent, according to On3, and has an NIL evaluation of $108,000.
