Ohio State named the top cornerback unit in college football headed into 2024 by On 3

Ohio State football’s track record of developing cornerbacks of the past decade plus has been among the best in college football.

However, it has taken a bit of a hit in recent years with no Buckeye corner being drafted in the first four rounds since Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette in 2020.  But the Buckeyes’ cornerback play took a massive leap last season, and with all three starters returning along with a lot of young talent in the room expectations are sky high for the unit.

This is backed up by On3’s college football columnist Jesse Simonton who ranked the Buckeyes as the best cornerback room in college football headed into the 2024 season in his article last week.

One of the biggest returnees for Ohio State in 2024 was Denzel Burke who will enter his fourth season as a starter. Burke is coming off the best season of his career where he was named first-team all Big Ten by the coaches.

Also playing boundary corner will be Davison Igbinosun, who returns for his second season with the Buckeyes.  The former Ole Miss transfer avoids mental lapses in coverage well, is a strong tackler, and plays with a high level of intensity.

Jordan Hancock who emerged as a starter for the Buckeyes’ defense last season is expected to start in the same role at slot cornerback. Hancock is reliable as a coverage defender, run defender, and blitzer.

Also expected to play a role in the defense is Jermaine Mathews Jr., who played 192 defensive snaps in his true freshman season and showcased his potential in those reps as PFF’s highest graded freshman cornerback.

With Calvin Simpson-Hunt, Lorenzo Styles Jr., Aaron Scott Jr., Bryce West, and Miles Lockhart also on the roster, Ohio State has a lot of depth at the position and young talent that will look to develop for future seasons.

Jermaine Mathews Jr. named college football network freshman all-american

Some notoriety for Jermaine Matthews Jr. #GoBucks

With the college football regular season wrapped up, College Football Network released their freshman All-American team this week.  Included on the team was Ohio state cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr.

Very few true freshmen in college football make an impact so early in their career, but Mathews Jr. was able to do that for Ohio State.

After arriving at Ohio State as the top-ranked player in Ohio in the 2023 class he flashed his abilities early in the season on a pick six against Western Kentucky.

When Denzel Burke got injured against Purdue mid-season, Mathews stepped up big time as he allowed just three catches for 29 yards on seven targets in Ohio State’s defensive domination against Penn State.

Two weeks later he made the first start of his career against Rutgers allowing zero catches on two targets.

Ohio State has a great track record of developing cornerbacks and after the true freshman season Matthews Jr. had Buckeye fans should be excited about what the future holds for him.

Ohio State defensive player-by-player PFF grades for Western Kentucky game

How did PFF grade each player’s performance on defense for the Western Kentucky game? #GoBucks

Excitement around the Ohio State fanbase is at a high as the Buckeyes just put together a dominant performance on both sides of the ball in a 63-10 win over Western Kentucky and will head to South Bend to play Notre Dame on Saturday.

The Buckeyes defense came into the Western Kentucky with just 10 points allowed in the first two games. This was considered a good test for the unit as the Hilltoppers have had good offenses in each of the past two seasons and scored 93 points in their first two games.

The defense certainly passed this test holding Western Kentucky to just 10 points and scoring two defensive touchdowns. Going further, we break down each defensive position group’s performance using Pro Football Focus grades for each player. While PFF grades aren’t the end all be all, it is a great tool to break down individual players’ performance.
