Rockets welcome Astros, World Series MVP Jeremy Pena to Toyota Center

Monday’s loudest cheers at Toyota Center went to World Series MVP Jeremy Pena, who was among several champion Astros showing their support for the Rockets.

HOUSTON — The Rockets didn’t get the win in Monday’s home loss to the Clippers at Toyota Center, but they did get a reminder of the potential benefits of a successful franchise rebuilding plan.

The Houston Astros, who recently won Major League Baseball’s World Series for a second time (2017, 2022), had owner Jim Crane, shortstop Jeremy Pena and reserve infielder David Hensley in attendance at Monday’s Rockets game.

Pena, the Most Valuable Player of the 2022 World Series, was an enormous hit when shown on the big screen and when he tossed autographs into the crowd.

Pena, who wore a throwback Rockets jacket with an older logo, didn’t get to see the win from the local NBA team that he had hoped for. But as he acknowledged in his TV interview, Pena, his teammates and sports fans across Houston have enough to celebrate, as it is.

Here’s a look at how it sounded and looked Monday.

Trey Mancini is late substitute for Astros in Game 5 World Series win

Mancini shows more value with his glove than his bat.

Once again, Notre Dame alumni were absent from both starting lineups of a World Series contest. That changed in the eighth inning en route to a 3-2 Houston Astros win, giving them a 3-2 series lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. With two outs, [autotag]Trey Mancini[/autotag] was called on to pinch-hit for Yuli Gurriel, but he struck out to end the inning, bringing him to 0 for 18 in the postseason. However, he stayed in the game to take over at first base.

Mancini was much more productive with his glove. He fielded Kyle Schwarber’s ground ball and recorded the unassisted third out in the bottom of the eighth, snuffing out a Phillies rally that had produced one run. Then, he got the final putout of the ninth and the game when Nick Castellanos grounded out to shortstop Jeremy Pena.

[autotag]Matt Vierling[/autotag] did not appear for the Phillies at all. He has not played since he appeared as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning of Game 3, when Mancini flied out to him.

Top 6 best bets to win 2022 World Series MVP

Top 6 players to bet for World Series MVP.

The World Series begins Friday with the Houston Astros hosting the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1.

Both teams enter the series on impressive runs, increasing the level of intrigue for what might happen. The betting favorite to win, Houston swept its way through the postseason to the World Series. Barely outdone, the Phillies made the playoffs as a Wild Card before sweeping that round, and losing just a single game in the NLDS and NLCS each.

With this unlikely World Series about to commence, it’s time to look at my top six MVP candidates and their odds to win. Astros dominate the list, because Houston is favored to win, but a couple Phillies made the list too.
