Panthers Highlights: Jeremy Chinn’s forced fumble sets up Mike Davis touchdown

The Panthers lead 7-6 about midway through the second quarter.

The Panthers have been struggling on offense and special teams against the Broncos early on. Their defense has stepped up, though.

Watch Jeremy Chinn light up Drew Lock on a blitz and force a fumble that was almost run back for a score by Efe Obada.

That helped set up this short touchdown run by Mike Davis.

Watch: Panthers’ standout rookie Jeremy Chinn joins GMFB

Today, Chinn was a guest on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

Panthers fans have to take what they can get in 2020, which has predictably been a disappointment on defense. However, the team does have two young stars to build around in Brian Burns and Jeremy Chinn. Burns has already become one of the league’s top defensive ends and currently leads his position in Pro Bowl votes in the NFC. Meanwhile, Chinn has won Defensive Rookie of the Month twice in a row and is starting to get some serious national recognition as well.

2 more Panthers players fined for penalties vs. Vikings

According to Joe Person at the Athletic, running back Trenton Cannon ($20,000) and starting guard John Miller ($10,000) have been fined, as well.

As it turns out, Jeremy Chinn isn’t the only Panthers player whose wallet is a little lighter after last week’s loss to the Vikings. In addition to Chinn’s $5,606 fine for dunking after his first touchdown, two other Carolina players have been fined by the league for unnecessary roughness penalties against Minnesota.

According to Joe Person at the Athletic, running back Trenton Cannon ($20,000) and starting guard John Miller ($10,000) have been fined, as well.

Cannon has made a habit of special teams penalties lately, as have the Panthers in general. He split carries with Mike Davis and Rodney Smith against the Vikings, but likely won’t see much of the field anymore once Christian McCaffrey returns to the lineup after the bye week, at least on offense.

As for Miller, this was his third penalty of the season. He has performed adequately well at right guard in the 10 games he’s been active, though.

Panthers rookie Jeremy Chinn fined for dunk during touchdown celebration

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the league has fined Chinn $5,606 for dunking on the goal post.

It’s been a busy week for Panthers rookie Jeremy Chinn. He made NFL history by scoring defensive touchdowns against the Vikings on back to back plays on Sunday. Later, he was named the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for the second time.

Chinn’s celebration against Minnesota will cost him, though. According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the league has fined Chinn $5,606 for dunking on the goal post.

Stupid rule.

In any case, Chinn has some strong competition but right now it’s hard to consider anyone else the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Panthers DT Derrick Brown leads all NFL rookies in run stops

According to Pro Football Focus, defensive tackle Derrick Brown leads all rookies in run stops this season.

Jeremy Chinn looks like the runaway favorite to win the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Chinn was the third pick by the Panthers in this year’s draft and his accomplishments have somewhat overshadowed the work that Carolina’s first choice has done.

According to Pro Football Focus, defensive tackle Derrick Brown leads all rookies in run stops this season with 18, just beating out Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen (17).

Brown has been impacting the game as a pass rusher, as well. In fact, heading into last week he also led all rookies in pressures (20), edging out No. 2 overall pick Chase Young (18).

While the pressures have been there, Brown still hasn’t recorded his first sack. He does have seven quarterback hits, though.

If Brown can start converting those pressures into sacks and cut down on the penalties (he leads the NFL with nine), he may yet deliver on that top-10 pick promise.

Carolina Panthers do-it-all defender Jeremy Chinn has been named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for November

Carolina Panthers do-it-all defender Jeremy Chinn has been named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for November.

A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Southern Illinois, Chinn is coming off a historic performance last week, as he became the first player in NFL history to score defensive touchdowns on consecutive plays.

Chinn racked up 30 tackles in November, and continues to make big plays all over the field, already establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Carolina defense.

Panthers LB Jeremy Chinn wins Defensive Rookie of the Month again

Panthers hybrid defender Jeremy Chinn has been named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for November, earning him the award for the second straight month.

Carolina Panthers hybrid defender Jeremy Chinn has been named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for November, earning him the award for the second straight month.

Carolina traded up at the end of the second round of this year’s draft to pick Chinn, an athletic and dynamic playmaker from Southern Illinois. While the team’s first two selections – Derrick Brown and Yetur Gross-Matos – have both shown plenty of potential, right now it’s clear that Chinn is the gem of the team’s 2020 class.

Chinn has played in 11 of the team’s 12 games this season, totaling 87 combined tackles, five passes defensed, one interception, three quarterback hits and two fumbles recovered for touchdowns.

To be sure, there’s still work to be done. Chinn has missed 12 tackles this season, an average of 12.1%. He’s also allowed four touchdowns and a 110.3 passer rating when targeted.

That said, Chinn has shown tremendous versatility, range and instincts. He lines up all over the field and has taken on a wide variety of tasks, including covering Rob Gronkowski one-on-one and spying Kyler Murray.

Along with Brian Burns and Christian McCaffrey, he’s a cornerstone piece for this team. Chinn’s ceiling is as high as any young defender in the league.

Listen: Panthers rookie Jeremy Chinn talks about Luke Kuechly’s influence

Listen to rookie linebacker Jeremy Chinn talk about Kuechly’s mentorship and influence on his game.

The Carolina Panthers’ defense is missing former middle linebacker Luke Kuechly. It doesn’t hurt to still have him in the building, though. After retiring in January, Kuechly became a pro scout for Carolina. As you might imagine, he’s proven to be an invaluable resource for some of the team’s young defenders.

Listen to rookie linebacker Jeremy Chinn talk about Kuechly’s mentorship and influence on his game.

Chinn won Defensive Rookie of the Month for October and is likely to be rookie of the week after scoring two touchdowns in a row against the Vikings. He may not win the award, but he’s absolutely deserving of being in the DROY conversation.

Panthers rookie watch: Lightning strikes twice for Jeremy Chinn

Here is how the rookies did in Week 12.

The Panthers did not get what they needed from their starting quarterback or their coaching staff in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. However, one of their rookies almost single-handedly won the game by making NFL history.

Here is how the rookies did in Week 12.

Lightning struck twice for Jeremy Chinn

There’s always a lot of luck involved in recovering fumbles. The odds for it to happen twice in a row must be astronomical. For Chinn to scoop up two fumbles on consecutive plays and run them both back for touchdowns is more than just luck, though. Chinn had to be in the right place at the right time and put himself in position to succeed.

This was the first time in NFL history a defender scored touchdowns on back-to-back plays. Chinn also threw in a team-high 13 tackles against Minnesota. It’s no longer hype or speculation. He has the potential to be one of the most effective defensive players in this league.

Derrick Brown did it again

Carolina’s first-round pick is becoming a respectable mover of the pocket, even if he can’t get a sack. Brown came into Week 12 leading all 2020 rookies in pressures. However, he’s still having serious penalty problems. Brown drew another flag against the Vikings this week, bringing his season total to nine, more than any other player in the NFL. Brown has to find a way to play with more discipline, end of story. This wasn’t a great game for him, but Brown did add two more quarterback hits.

Yetur Gross-Matos was quiet

Gross-Matos didn’t have much of an impact on this game. He was able to get a couple of pressures on Kirk Cousins and notched half a tackle for a loss, though.

Bravvion Roy got a sack and an injury

Sixth-round pick Bravvion Roy earned the first sack of his career when Kirk Cousins fell down after getting his foot stepped on by his left guard. Roy left the field early with an elbow injury, though.

Troy Pride Jr. stepped up

With Donte Jackson out, Troy Pride Jr. and Stantley Thomas-Oliver split his reps on the outside again. Pride’s coverage looked to be much improved from what we have come to expect, as we saw on this PBU when he was covering Justin Jefferson.

Stantley Thomas-Oliver did not

Thomas-Oliver was notably less successful, though. He got flambeed on this touchdown for Jefferson.

As for the other rookies, Myles Hartsfield came through with another splash play on special teams when he recovered the muffed punt return by Chad Beebe. Running back Rodney Smith totaled 18 yards on seven carries.

Jeremy Chinn makes NFL history with defensive TDs on back-to-back plays

Carolina Panthers rookie Jeremy Chinn made NFL history by scoring defensive touchdowns on back-to-back plays Sunday

The Carolina Panthers may have lost a heartbreaker to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, but they still saw some NFL history made by rookie defensive back Jeremy Chinn.

A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Southern Illinois, Chinn scored defensive touchdowns on back-to-back plays during Sunday’s game.

One of the favorites to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Chinn has been making plays all over the field for the Panthers this season, showing off the same athleticism and versatility that made him a Senior Bowl standout.
