Clemson legend Hunter Renfrow, now in his third season with the Raiders, went to work against Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward in Sunday’s NFL game in Kansas City.

Renfrow ran a beautiful route and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter on a day when he finished with a career-high 13 receptions for 117 yards.

On Twitter, former Clemson co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Jeff Scott, now the head coach at South Florida, was asked if he had ever seen the sort of route Renfrow displayed against Ward in Sunday’s game.

Scott, who coached Renfrow at Clemson from 2014-18, responded to the question on Twitter, essentially telling pro scouts “I told you so” on Renfrow:

A look at how Tony Elliott could take the same approach assembling a staff like Jeff Scott did at USF

Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott is a candidate to become Tennessee’s next head coach.

The University of Tennessee is searching for its next football head coach under the direction of director of athletics Danny White.

Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott is a candidate to become Tennessee’s next head coach.

Elliott has coached at Clemson since 2011. He started as a running backs coach for the Tigers, a unit he oversaw through the 2014 campaign.

Elliott was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach from 2015-19.

Jeff Scott coached alongside Elliott as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach between 2015-19.

Scott left Clemson for his first head coaching position at South Florida following the 2019 campaign. Scott’s departure allowed for Elliott to become the Tigers’ sole offensive coordinator in 2020.

Scott joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” ahead of the 2020 season and discussed assembling a staff as a first-time head coach at South Florida.

“My time at Clemson, one of the things that I learned from Coach (Dabo) Swinney, is the importance of your staff,” Scott said. “I think as a head coach, there are so many things that are pulling you away with your commitment with donors and different things outside of your team that you really have to have a staff that you can really trust that can deliver the message, that you want to be delivered to your program.

“I have heard Coach Swinney say many times, there are thousands and thousands of coaches that know X’s and O’s, but when you really kind of pair it down to coaches of high character and that are going to do things the right way for their players, and really invest in their players, other than just helping them become a better football player, but also prepare them personally so that the 30-year old version of themselves is proud of the young man that was developed within your program. That group of coaches is a lot smaller list and, for me, there were several boxes that need to be checked as I was going through it and interviewing coaches. I am just very, very pleased with our staff and having the opportunity to be with them here.”

If Elliott were to land Tennessee’s head coaching position, he could approach assembling his staff in the same manner as Scott.

USF Using Video of Notre Dame Game to Contact Trace

With Notre Dame seeing a COVID-19 outbreak, no one is taking any chances.

With Notre Dame seeing a COVID-19 outbreak, no one is taking any chances. That includes USF, the Irish’s most recent opponent. In light of the developments in South Bend, the Bulls have opted to contact trace by looking at the video of Saturday’s game. There were no positive tests during the two rounds conducted Friday or the one from Monday.

USF has had problems with the availability of offensive linemen. Whether or not that is because of the virus is unknown. When asked how close the Bulls have gotten to canceling a game, coach Jeff Scott said the following:

We have not gotten to that point yet. It was just to the point where the guys who maybe had to go into the game just got here as true freshmen but we have not – thank goodness – we have not been to a point yet where we have had too many at one position. It has only been a lot of key guys but you do have some younger walk-ons and stuff that just showed up that can give you a little bit of depth.

Let’s hope that no more significant virus damage comes to Notre Dame or any of its opponents this season. Sadly, that’s wishful thinking in this environment. All we can do is pray for everyone’s safety and judgment.

Former Clemson assistant calls this Kelly’s best Notre Dame team yet

In case you missed it Saturday afternoon, longtime Clemson offensive coordinator Jeff Scott gave this Notre Dame team big-time praise.

If you didn’t catch it while getting ready for Notre Dame’s game against South Florida last week, the new Bulls head coach Jeff Scott is a longtime assistant at Clemson, having helped coordinate their offense from 2015-2019.

At age 39, Scott became the youngest head coach in the American Athletic Conference this past off-season as he tries to help turn things around for South Florida.

In the meantime, Scott has been around plenty of winning football in recent years as Clemson went to the College Football Playoff five times with him as a staff member and won it all twice in that time.

I missed Scott’s press conference following Saturday’s game but in scanning YouTube on Monday I stumbled into something you’ll probably find interesting.

In Scott’s post game press conference the South Florida head coach was about as complimentary to the 2020 Notre Dame football team as you’ll ever see an opposing head coach be:

  •  Scott calls Notre Dame “playoff caliber” and admits that “sometimes you’ve got to tip your cap”
  • Scott says that “it felt like we were playing Clemson just in gold helmets”
  • Scott says that it feels like this is the best team since Kelly has been at Notre Dame and thinks Kelly has pretty much said the same.

It’s high praise from a young coach who has been around a lot of winning.  It’s clear from watching a few of the South Florida players meet the media after the game that their coaches said similar things to them as multiple players called Notre Dame “a playoff team”.

(Props to Carter Karels of the South Bend Tribune for asking the question that received this response)

It doesn’t guarantee anything but it’s certainly worth noting and discussing a bit, especially after the poor feeling many Notre Dame fans had after their showing in the opener against Duke.

What I do know is that even if the stars on this Notre Dame team don’t carry the same star power that perhaps a Jaylon Smith or Quenton Nelson have in recent years, but the depth of this Notre Dame team is at worst just as deep, but probably deeper in terms of talent than any other squad Brian Kelly has coached here.
