Nets’ Sean Marks has some front-office vacancies to fill

After the departures of Jeff Peterson and Ryan Gisriel, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks has some front office roles to fill.

NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets are in the beginning stages of a pivotal offseason for them as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2023-24 season. Like most teams, Brooklyn has to figure out how its going to fill vacancies within the organization, especially the front office.

“I couldn’t be happier for Jeff and Ryan,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said recently about Jeff Peterson and Ryan Gisriel, two members of Brooklyn’s front office that left to take executive roles with the Charlotte Hornets. Peterson was the assistant GM for the Nets for the past four seasons while Gisriel had been in various front office roles for Brooklyn since the 2013-14 season.

“For Jeff to go and run his own program there (Charlotte Hornets). He’s well deserving and (it’s an) incredible opportunity. We were counting down the days this was going to happen for the last two or three years. Tremendous guy, we wish him nothing but the best. Both he and Ryan,” Marks said.

Once Mitch Kupchak, Charlotte’s head of basketball operations since 2018, stepped down from his role in February, there were reports of who would be considered to assume his role and Peterson was one of those names being floated around. Now that Peterson and Gisriel are gone, Marks will have to look for at least one person to become his second-in-command, so to speak.

“As far as replacing these guys, I think it’s always important to have a best-available list. Whether you’re looking at players or whether you’re looking at staff. So, we look at maybe who’s out there and who we could potentially bring in, but also our own staff here,” Marks said.

Former Razorback Jeff Peterson to join Hornets as head of basketball operations

A former Razorback is expected to become one of the top executives for the Charlotte Hornets.

Former Arkansas basketball player Jeff Peterson is expected to become the Charlotte Hornets’ new head of basketball operations.

After multiple stints with franchises all around the NBA, Peterson will now be one of the top executives in the Hornets’ organization. Since 2019, he worked as the assistant general manager with the Brooklyn Nets.

The now 35-year-old former guard transferred to Arkansas from Iowa for two years, including one redshirt season. Peterson played in 29 games and averaged 6.3 points a game. For his final year of eligibility, Peterson transferred to Florida State. Both of his seasons were under the former head basketball Coach John Pelphery.

After college, Peterson joined the Hawks’ franchise as a scouct during the 2013-14 season. He made the jump to basketball operations coordinator after one season, then to director of scouting in 2015, and finally to assistant general manager where he stayed for the 2016-19 basketball seasons.

From 2019 to the present, Peterson has been with the Brooklyn Nets. In his time with the Nets he sign huge NBA talent like James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant.
Another person with ties to Arkansas will be with him at Charlotte. Former guard Nick Smith Jr. was selected by the Hornets in the first round of the 2023 NBA draft. Smith has a decent start to his career, averaging 6.4 points a game and 40.% from the field

Report: Nets’ Jeff Peterson expected to be candidate for Hornets executive position

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that Brooklyn Nets assistant GM Jeff Peterson is expected to be considered for the Hornets’ FO role.

The Brooklyn Nets are trying to turn their season around as they look to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff race before it’s too late. They made some solid moves at the NBA trade deadline to improve their team and one of the members of the front office that made those decisions could be up for a promotion.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Monday that Mitch Kupchak, President of Basketball Operations for the Charlotte Hornets, is stepping down from that role to become an organizational advisor. Wojnarowski noted that one of the people expected to be a candidate for that position is Nets assistant general manager Jeff Peterson.

Wojnarowski added that Charlotte’s owners are expected to hire Kupchak’s successor prior to the end of the 2023-24 regular season. So, if Peterson ends up getting the job, he would be leaving Brooklyn before the end of the Nets’ regular season and possible postseason run.

Peterson has been working in the NBA ever since the 2013-14 season when he was a scout for the Atlanta Hawks. Since then, he has worked his up through the ranks until he was hired to be the assistant GM for Brooklyn beginning with the 2019-20 season.

As Nets Wire wrote this past offseason, Peterson has been considered a candidate for front office positions around the league. He has been previously been considered for open executive positions for the Washington Wizards and the Hornets.

Nets’ Jeff Peterson could be next lead executive for the Charlotte Hornets

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, Brooklyn Nets assistant general manager Jeff Peterson could be leading the Charlotte Hornets.

The Brooklyn Nets have been through some trials and tribulations over the past few seasons due to the attention that came with having Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden in Brooklyn in pursuit of a championship. Despite all that happened, it looks like someone continued to make a name for himself in the process.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, Nets assistant general manager Jeff Peterson is regarded by most around the league as a possible lead executive for the Charlotte Hornets if they do not bring back general manager and president of basketball operations Mitch Kupchak. Peterson has been in Brooklyn since May 2019 when he was hired to fill the position that he currently has.

Peterson got his start in the NBA in 2013 as a scout for the Atlanta Hawks and worked his way up the ladder to be in contention for being a general manager for a team at some point in the near future. Here’s what Fischer had to say about Peterson:

“Brooklyn assistant general manager Jeff Peterson has emerged as one of the most respected young executives in the NBA. Peterson is hailed for his authenticity, particularly in his ability to communicate up and down the organizational chart. In 2020, Peterson interviewed for the Pistons’ general manager opening. And with a new ownership structure in Charlotte, should the Hornets ultimately move on from Mitch Kupchak after the final year of his contract, Peterson has become widely linked by league personnel as a possible next lead executive in Charlotte.”

Leading up to his position with the Nets, Peterson got his start in the NBA as a scout and basketball operations coordinator for Atlanta from 2013 to 2015 before becoming the director of scouting for the same franchise from 2015 to 2016. The extension makes sense from a …

The extension makes sense from a scouting standpoint: Marks and his staff, including assistant GM Jeff Peterson, have been adept at identifying talent, particularly through the draft. This summer, the front office has shown its ability to put together a complete team: The Nets signed talented scorer T.J. Warren on a veteran’s minimum deal, acquired 3-and-D wing Royce O’Neale for a 2023 first-round pick in a trade with the Utah Jazz, re-signed Nic Claxton and Patty Mills on two-year contracts and took a flier on Edmond Sumner, a high-flying wing who has recovered from an Achilles injury. Brooklyn still has its taxpayer’s mid-level exception, which it can use to sign one or two more impact players.

Report: Mike Dunleavy Jr. in running for Pistons assistant GM position

Mike Dunleavy Jr. could be leaving the Bay Area to take the Detroit Pistons assistant general manager job.

The Golden State Warriors may have one of their front office members leave for another team in the near future.

According to Ian Begley of SNY, Warriors assistant general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. is in the running for the Detroit Pistons assistant general manager position. Along with Dunleavy, Brooklyn Nets director of player personnel J.R. Holden is also being considered for the assistant general manager job.

Dunleavy, the son of former NBA coach Mike Dunleavy Sr., has been in his position with Golden State since last August. He began working with the team as a scout during 2018, per Begley.

The Pistons are also looking for a new general manager, with Oklahoma City Thunder vice president of basketball operations Troy Weaver and Nets assistant general manager Jeff Peterson being the top candidates, according to Begley.

The Pistons are headed toward a rebuild, with former franchise cornerstone Andre Drummond being dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers during February’s trade deadline. Though Blake Griffin is still there, he is under contract for next season and has a player option of approximately $39 million for the 2021-22 season, per HoopsHype.

Griffin, who missed most of this season due to a lingering knee injury, recently told ESPN’s Sage Steele that he is healthy. If the Pistons were to deal Griffin in a trade, he’d have to rebuild his reputation as a valuable player. Teams would want to see if he can still produce at a relatively high level before taking on his hefty contract.

Still, any front office member headed to Detroit will have some work to do. The Pistons finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 20-46. They currently have a 10.5% chance at the first pick in the 2020 NBA draft, according to Tankathon. Their highest pick odds are at seventh overall, with a 26.7% chance.
