Josh Heupel and Jeff Brohm discuss the magnitude of winning a bowl game.

Tennessee (7-5, 4-4 SEC) will play in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl against Purdue (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten).

The contest will take place Thursday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

Ahead of the matchup, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm met with media and discussed the TransPerfect Music City Bowl.

Heupel and Brohm discussed the magnitude of winning a bowl game.

“I think if you’re a great competitor, and those are traits that we try to build and recruit, too, and have inside of our building every single day in what you do, it does matter. It matters how you perform. It matters to you individually and collectively as a team, so certainly this is a game that our players have pushed towards, and it matters a great deal inside of our program. A bowl game is unique in that I think it’s important that they enjoy the experience with you’re at home in your preparation, when you get to the bowl site early in the week, but the carrot of the whole week and the thing that you’ll remember most about the experience is the game itself.” –Josh Heupel

“You always want to finish what you started, and I know our guys have worked real hard to get to this point. They’ve done a really good job of fighting through the season and figuring out a way to finish the regular season 8-4 and have this opportunity to play a tremendous opponent basically in their home state in a tremendous atmosphere. We’re excited about the challenges of the team to step forward and see what they’re made of, and whoever takes the field, you want to go out there and do your very best and try to finish the season as strong as you can. I know our guys are going to go out there and compete, and it should be a great day of football.” –Jeff Brohm

The contest will take place Thursday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

Ahead of the matchup, Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm met with media and discussed wide receivers David Bell and Milton Wright not playing for the Boilermakers.

“Well, fortunately for us we do have a lot of receivers on our team,” Brohm said. “We’re down quite a few, but that’s the nature of football. Whether it’s the last bowl game or the first game of next year, new guys are going to have to emerge, and this will be a great environment to see how some of these guys respond.

“We’re looking forward to a few new faces being on the field. We still want to try to do what we do best and get the ball to our playmakers and figure out a way to score points on offense and see if we can get a few stops on defense. That’s always the goal is to just compete and game plan against a quality opponent and see if you can win.”

A look at Jeff Brohm’s one season as UAB’s offensive coordinator and how it almost did not happen

Jeff Brohm’s one season as UAB’s offensive coordinator helped elevate his career. A look at Jeff Brohm’s one season as UAB’s offensive coordinator in 2012 and how it almost did not happen.

Tennessee (7-5, 4-4 SEC) will play in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl against Purdue (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten).

The contest will take place Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

Jeff Brohm is in his fifth season as Purdue’s head coach.

Brohm played quarterback at Louisville for head coach Howard Schnellenberger from 1989-93. Brohm launched his collegiate coaching career at Louisville as the Cardinals’ quarterbacks coach from 2003-06 under head coach Bobby Petrino.

Following Petrino’s departure to Atlanta in the NFL, Brohm joined Schnellenberger’s Florida Atlantic staff as quarterbacks coach in 2009.

He would reunite with Paul Petrino from 2010-11 at Illinois. Paul Petrino served as Illinois’ offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach as Brohm oversaw quarterbacks. At Louisville, Paul Petrino served as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under his brother, Bobby Petrino.

Another coach from the Petrino coaching tree, Garrick McGee, was hired as UAB’s head coach in 2012. McGee hired Brohm to serve as the Blazers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Brohm almost did not serve as UAB’s offensive coordinator in 2012.

McGee initially hired Joe Gilbert as his offensive coordinator, while Brohm was slated to oversee the Blazers’ quarterbacks.

Gilbert departed UAB after three weeks to become an offensive line coach with Indianapolis in the NFL. Brohm was then elevated to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, a position that would help elevate his career into where he is today 10 years later.

Ahead of the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, Tyler Cantrell and myself discussed Brohm’s career and his one season at UAB. In 2012, Cantrell covered UAB and I worked with the Blazers’ football program.

“Jeff Brohm was actually not hired initially as the offensive coordinator and only the quarterbacks coach,” Cantrell told Vols Wire in a TransPerfect Music City Bowl preview. “They hired Joe Gilbert. Joe Gilbert came with Jeff Brohm and they had been working on Ron Zook’s staff at Illinois together. They both came over together.

“Joe Gilbert was introduced as offensive coordinator, but a very short time later he took an offensive line position under Chuck Pagano with the Indianapolis Colts. He never got into spring before he took a job in the NFL.”

Under Brohm in 2012, UAB had two 1,000-yard passers, one 1,000-yard rusher and three wide receivers with 600-plus yards.

Brohm’s one season serving as a first-time offensive coordinator away from Louisville helped him elevate his career into becoming a head coach at Western Kentucky (2014-16) and Purdue.

Music City Bowl preview: Josh Heupel discusses Purdue’s passing offense

Tennessee (7-5, 4-4 SEC) will play in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl against Purdue (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten).

The contest will take place Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

First-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel met with media Sunday ahead of playing Purdue.

Heupel discussed Purdue’s passing offense under Boilermakers’ head coach Jeff Brohm.

“They’ve got playmakers out on the perimeter,” Heupel said of Purdue’s offense. “They do a great job of getting the ball out of the quarterback’s hands. He is a good decision maker, accurate with it, does a good job of taking care of it. You’ve got to do a great job, perimeter screen-game, defeat blocks and go make plays in space.

“Defensively, for us, we’ve got to do a great job of affecting the quarterback. If we can get them into third and long and put some pressure on them, that’s going to be critical. At the same time, with some of their quick game, we’ve got to find a way to cause some issues with windows and them being able to deliver the football.”

At UAB, Brohm implemented his style of tempo with a mixture of different looks featuring pro-style, spread, pistol and I-formation looks, as well as showcasing trick plays. Brohm’s offense remains intact from his time at UAB in 2012.

At UAB and now with Purdue, Brohm continues a philosophy in which Bobby Petrino has coached throughout his career — feed the studs — making it a priority to get play-makers the ball in their hands.

Below are various passing plays from Brohm at Purdue and with UAB in 2012.

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm on Ohio State after the game: ‘We were lucky to hold ’em to 59′

Among other glowing remarks he had for Ohio State, Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said the Boilermakers “were lucky to hold ’em to 59.”

The Ohio State football team came out and showed all the naysayers and critics that yes — when executing at the level it can — the points will come in bunches. The Buckeyes came out and put up over 600 yards of offense for the game and scored 42 points before even heading into the locker room at halftime.

OSU pulled the throttle back a little in the second half but finished the game with 59 points and surrendered 31 to Purdue to walk away with another victory on this 2021 journey it hopes ends in another Big Ten championship and run to the College Football Playoff.

Take that, national pundits.

Count Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm as a believer. He met with the media after the game to talk about what he saw and it turned into a six-minute informercial for Ohio State. He couldn’t stop talking about the talent level, how well the Buckeyes executed, and even said the Boilermakers were probably destined to give up more points.

“They (Ohio State) have tremendous talent,” Brohm said. “That offensive line is enormous, they do a tremendous job. The quarterback is athletic. He can throw it, he can move and make throws. The receivers across the board, I mean I don’t know if you can guard them. They have receivers on the outside — both sides — on the inside, they got really good running backs, and I think they’re well-coached. So, they know how to score points, they know how to move the ball. They get into the best play they can by looking at the defense and adjusting and doing those things.

“You know, in order to beat them you have to match up to them, you got to challenge them, you got to get up and guard them, and try to create some turnovers,” continued Brohm. “The other side of the ball they play well too, so like I said, I give them a ton of credit. They definitely came ready to play and executed at a high level and got it to their playmakers it seemed like whatever they wanted. We were lucky to hold them to 59.”

You can listen to the comments for yourself by clicking on the below thanks to the Journal & Courier’s YouTube Channel.

To be honest and fair to Brohm, it seemed like all of the questions that were lobbed to him were about how good Ohio State was, so he was just being honest, taking his medicine, and giving the Buckeyes their due credit after what we all witnessed on Saturday. Still, the six minutes of the interview was pretty much an advertisement for why you might want to come to the banks of the Olentangy to play some good ‘ole American football if you’re a strapping young lad that can play the game at a high level.

Ohio State will now prepare for another big one. The Buckeyes will host Michigan State this coming Saturday. They just keep getting bigger.

WATCH: What Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said about Ohio State leading into the game Saturday

Listen to what Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said about Ohio State leading into the game Saturday.

Ohio State is back at home to host a Purdue team that knows it has what it takes to knock off some quality opponents this season. After all, the Boilermaker already have wins over Iowa and Spartans Wire, both of which were unbeaten when the black and gold went toe-to-toe with them.

But this is most likely a bigger challenge than those two. The Buckeyes have more talent in the league than anyone and can beat you several ways. On top of that, Purdue has not won in Columbus since 1988 because you know the fans in the ‘Shoe will be working to give Ohio State a boost if they can.

Boilermaker head coach Jeff Brohm met with his media this week to preview the Buckeyes and he had some outstanding things to say about OSU. In case you missed any of his comments, you can click on the below video from the Journal and Courier and listen to him discuss how quickly Ohio State can score points, what a talented team the Buckeyes are, the challenge of his team going to Columbus, and more.

Ohio State and Purdue will kick off at 3:30 p.m. EST Saturday with ABC having the call.

Ranking Big Ten football coaching salaries for 2021

Here is how the Big Ten football coaching salaries compare against each other in 2021.

It goes without saying that being a head coach in the Big Ten is a financially rewarding gig if you can get it. With the financial resources available to schools around the Big Ten, the coaches receive some big paydays even for a mediocre job. Every year, USA TODAY updates its database of coaching salaries so fans can see just how much many coaches around the country are being paid, which inevitably leads to debates over which coaches are overpaid and which deserve more?

And then there are the coaches who do not see their salary terms made public. Well, for the most part, that is. Not every school, including Penn State, has decided to make all of the financial details with their head football coach available for public consumption. But that won’t stop us from ranking the Big Ten’s coaching salaries based on what we do know.

So here is a ranking of Big Ten coaching salaries based solely on what the school is scheduled to pay their head coach in 2021. Note that these figures do not take into account any payment reductions as a result of restructuring during a pandemic.
