Where should you draft Warren?

Warren’s fantasy value should get a boost with the arrival of QB’s Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, whose play-making abilities will open up the Steelers’ offense and keep defenders on their heels.

With Warren’s skills on the rise and his counterpart Harris’ ability in a decline, Warren could be a sleeper in fantasy draft this season. Entering his 3rd year in the league, he should see another significant bump in production with a high upside.

Draft Warren around the 8th round, and don’t let him fall out of the 9th in 10-team leagues. When healthy, he’s good for at least 150 carries and 800-plus yards. He’s even more valuable in PPR leagues because of how often he’s targeted, grabbing 61 receptions last season.

Mike Tomlin offers update on Steelers RB Jaylen Warren injury

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t see Jaylen Warren’s injury as a long-term concern.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans clenched their pearls on Saturday as they watched Jaylen Warren head to the blue medical tent.

Warren caught a check-down pass by Russell Wilson and was engulfed by Bills defenders. Shortly after, he spent time in the blue medical tent before walking to the locker room. It was later revealed Warren had sustained a hamstring injury.

On Tuesday, Mike Tomlin provided a brief update on his running back’s status going forward. “He is out probably out for this week, but not anything that’s a long-term concern,” Tomlin said via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

A source of Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz said that Warren could miss a few weeks, while Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac thinks he could be ready for the season opener.

Only Tomlin, the trainers and Jaylen Warren know when Jaylen Warren will be ready.

REPORT: Steelers RB out for a few weeks with hamstring injury

Jaylen Warren could miss the start of the season.

On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost 9-3 to the Buffalo Bills. The Steelers also lost running back Jaylen Warren to a hamstring injury early in the game. According to multiple reports, including Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Reporter, the injury could sideline Warren for a few weeks.

This puts Warren’s start of the regular season in jeopardy. If Warren can’t go Week One, expect a heavy dose of Najee Harris against the Atlanta Falcons. Last season, Harris and Warren became more of a split backfield as the season went on with both guys seeing success. The Steelers don’t have an established No. 3 running back on the roster besides veteran Cordarrelle Patterson.

Last season, Warren rushed for 784 yards on only 149 carries. His 5.3 yards per carry was among the best in the NFL. The Steelers offense under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is all about establishing the run and the plan is to have Harris and Warren work together in the backfield.

Steelers RB Jaylen Warren exits Bills matchup with hamstring injury

Steelers RB Jaylen Warren exited the preseason matchup vs. the Bills with a hamstring injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren is doubtful to return versus the Buffalo Bills with a hamstring injury.

Warren caught a check-down pass by Russell Wilson and was engulfed by the Bills. Shortly after, Warren spent time in the blue medical tent before walking to the locker room.

It’s a good sign that Warren walked and wasn’t carted off. Sidelining him could’ve just been precautionary, but it’s worth monitoring.

Mike Tomlin could have an update after the game, but we likely won’t know more until next week.

Steelers RB tandem with rare opportunity in new offense

This Steelers offense is going to be very run heavy this season.

One thing has become clear about the Pittsburgh Steelers offense through two weeks of training camp. This new offense under OC Arthur Smith is going to be a ground-and-pound scheme and everything is going to run through running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

This might not fall in line with the current NFL schemes that seem to focus heavily on the passing game. Nevertheless, this is what the Steelers are bringing to the party in 2024.

However, after seeing this offense in action, we feel like Harris and Warren have a chance to do something special this season. Last season Harris rushed for 1,035 yards while Warren chipped in 784 more. This season we think the Steelers tandem has a chance to both top 1,000 yards rushing and join some elite company.

There have only been two players rushing for at least 1,000 yards on the same team in the same season seven times in NFL history. Here’s the full list we think Harris and Warren will join in 2024.

1972 – Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris – Miami Dolphins

1976 – Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier – Pittsburgh Steelers

1985 – Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack – Cleveland Browns

2006 – Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2008 – Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs – New York Giants

2009 – Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams – Carolina Panthers.

2019 – Lamar Jackson and Mark Ingram II – Baltimore Ravens

Steelers training camp: Jaylen Warren making things hard for Najee Harris

Jaylen Warren looks like he’s not going to be satisfied with just being a backup running back this season.

One of the early standouts at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp has been running back Jaylen Warren. We all knew Warren was an exceptional running back but he is entering year three and eyeing a new contract so you can see just after a few practices, Warren has stepped up his game.

A huge part of that has been in Warren’s conditioning. Head coach Mike Tomlin is a huge advocate of coming to camp in great shape as opposed to working into condition during camp and it’s clear Warren took that to heart in his offseason workouts.

Suppose Warren takes the next step in his own evolution as an NFL running back. In that case, he’s going to make it tough on the coaches not to make him the starting running back and he’s going to make it tough on the front office in giving Harris any significant contract extension.

Last season Warren was second on the team in rushing yards with 784 but down the stretch was the team’s best back. It’s a race between Harris and Warren to see who ends up the darling of Arthur Smith’s new offense to see which guy ends up the lead back. But if early training camp is any indication, it could easily be Warren.

CBS Sports unimpressed by Steelers trio of skill players

The Steelers triplets score lost on CBS Sports ranking.

CBS Sports ranked all the offensive trios in the NFL. This includes a quarterback, running back and wide receiver from each squad. Needless to say, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense should be better this year with the addition of Russell Wilson at quarterback but the CBS Sports panel didn’t seem impressed.

They ranked the Steelers’ offensive trio No. 26 under the tier of “too many question marks”. Here’s what they had to say about the Steelers ranking:

Our panel is, once again, not inspired by Russell Wilson — or by the Steelers’ triplets. Harris is likely to remain the lead back due to inertia and financial investment, but he has been outplayed by Jaylen Warren in each of their Warren’s two seasons. Pickens has a ton of talent, but we also haven’t seen him totally tap into it just yet, so it’s hard to say he should carry this ranking.

If the Steelers can all get on the same page with the Steelers’ new offensive scheme under Arthur Smith, this offense will be much better. Russell Wilson is far and away the best quarterback the Steelers have had since Ben Roethlisberger.

As for Harris, he’s topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first three seasons and wide receiver George Pickens led the league in yards per catch in 2023. This is the group that is going to shock everyone this season with just how much better the Steelers’ offense is.

Crazy stat illustrates the value and talent of Steelers RB Jaylen Warren

No back runs harder and breaks tackles like Jaylen Warren.

If you are paying attention to the Pittsburgh Steelers, you understand just how talented running back Jaylen Warren is. Listed as the team’s backup to Naje Harris, Warren has the skill set to be a full-time feature back.

NFL writer  Ryan Heath put together a graphical chart of NFL running backs that took broken tackles to a different level by filtering the results based on facing seven or more defenders in the box.

You can see the chart in Heath’s post below from X, formerly Twitter and you can see just how much better Warren is when it comes to broken tackles against a normal or loaded box than any other back in the NFL.

Last season Warren came on strong in the second half of the season and was the most dynamic back on the team. Despite Harris being the starter, we expect to see a near 50/50 split between Harris and Warren this season in the new Arthur Smith offense.

Fantasy football outlook: Pittsburgh Steelers running backs

One of these two backs is the fantasy favorite, but will both offer utility?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have long maintained an offense focused on the running game more than most teams. Even when Ben Roethlisberger was cementing his Hall of Fame resume, the ground game was vital to the success of the offense.

After struggling in the post-Big Ben era, the Steelers have set themselves up for success with three running backs who can all get the job done – Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson.

With one of the ultimate game manager quarterbacks in history now in Pittsburgh (Russell Wilson), all three of the top guys are going to get their opportunities to contribute. Throw in new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who oversaw the most run-heavy offense in the NFL the last three years while in Atlanta, there is reason for more than one of the Steelers running backs making an impact on fantasy rosters.

Steelers RBs nowhere to be found on ESPN rankings

The Steelers running backs get no respect by the league.

NFL running backs are in a strange spot right now. Despite this being one of the most talented and athletic groups we’ve seen in NFL history, they are still viewed as undervalued by the league and don’t get the respect they deserve.

ESPN polled NFL coaches, scouts and executives to put together this ranking of the 10 best running backs in the league. Here’s how the top 10 went:

1 – Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers

2 – Breece Hall, New York Jets

3 – Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns

4 – Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles

5 – Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

6 – Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons

7 – Josh Jacobs, Green Bay Packers

8 – Jahmy Gibbs, Detroit Lions

9 – Derrick Henry, Baltimore Ravens

10 – Travis Etienne, Jacksonville Jaguars

You will notice that there are no Steelers backs to be seen. In fact, even when you look at the honorable mentions, there’s no mention of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren at all.

To find Harris, you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom and he is among those backs who also received votes. This is despite Harris topping 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first three seasons. A feat no other running back has ever accomplished.
