Auburn using a simple message to try and flip 5-star Alabama commit Jaylen Mbakwe

Can Hugh Freeze pull off yet another big flip?

[autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and Auburn have already flipped one five-star commit from Nick Saban and Alabama this year and they are working on No. 2.

[autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag] has been committed to the Crimson Tide since July 26, 2022, and it will be tough to pry him away but that hasn’t stopped Freeze and safeties coach [autotag]Zach Etheridge[/autotag] from recruiting Mbakwe and they are using a simple message.

“The message has basically been like come rebuild the program,” Mbakwe told Auburn Undercover’s Christian Clemente. “Come be great with other guys.”

One of those other guys is Auburn linebacker [autotag]D’Angelo Barber[/autotag], who plays with Mbakwe at Clay-Chalkville and is working to bring him to the Plains with him.

“That’s the No. 1 recruiter for me right now, Coach Freeze just being heavy on me, uplifting me and telling me to come to Auburn, be great and come play for him.”

Mbakwe is the No. 18 overall player and No. 1 athlete in the 247Sports composite ranking. He is also the No. 2 player from Alabama.

Auburn back in the picture for five star CB

“Flipmas” was a success in 2023. Can Hugh Freeze work his magic on Alabama commit Jaylen Mbakwe?

The state of Alabama’s top 2024 recruit has been a lock for Alabama since last July. However, [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is working to change his mind.

[autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag], a five-star cornerback from Clay-Chalkville in metro Birmingham, took an official visit to Auburn last weekend. During his visit, Freeze and defensive assistants [autotag]Wesley McGriff[/autotag] and [autotag]Zac Etheridge[/autotag] told Mbakwe that they were making him a priority this recruiting cycle, which may have him changing his tune when it comes to Auburn.

Mbakwe admitted to Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover that Auburn was high on his list when [autotag]Gus Malzahn[/autotag] was the head coach on the Plains, but he put Auburn aside when [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] took over. He says that Freeze opened his eyes during his recent visit.

“I like to look in-state first. It kind of opened my eyes,” Mbakwe said in an interview with Auburn Undercover. This was the place I first wanted to come before the coaching change. I kind of backed off with coach (Bryan) Harsin here. With coach Freeze and the new staff, it kind of opened my eyes.”

Not only does Mbakwe want to compete on the gridiron at the next level, but he is also looking to run track. While on his visit, he spent time with Auburn Track and Field head coach [autotag]Leroy Burrell[/autotag].

“The track coaches are great,” Mbakwe said. “I came down for a track practice once. They were really fast. I see myself being one of those guys, a 9.9 guy.”

After his visit, Mbakwe says that Auburn has a chance to flip his decision and that he plans to return to campus in July for Big Cat Weekend.

LSU seems to be closing the gap with 5-star Alabama cornerback commit

The Tigers made some progress with Jaylen Mbakwe after hosting him on campus this weekend.

Going head-to-head with the Crimson Tide for talent is never a walk in the park, but that’s a battle coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] hasn’t shied away from since arriving in Baton Rouge. Now, LSU seems to be in a position to try and flip away an uber-talented defensive back.

The Tigers hosted 2024 Alabama cornerback commit [autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag] on campus this weekend, and the five-star prospect from Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, Ala.) had positive things to say about the experience, praising everything from the facilities (both football and track) to Mike the Tiger.

He also had high praise for cornerbacks coach [autotag]Robert Steeples[/autotag], who has been his primary contact, he told 247Sports Steve Wiltfong (subscription required).

Mbakwe is rated as the No. 14 prospect nationally by the On3 Consensus, and he’s the No. 1 prospect in the state of Alabama. He’s been committed to the in-state Crimson Tide since July, and while LSU still seemingly has some ground to make up here, it’s off to a good start.

Alabama lands commitment from 2024 in-state DB Jaylen Mbakwe

Alabama lands massive commitment from 2024 ATH/DB Jaylen Mbakwe. He is the third commitment for the ’24 recruiting class.

The Alabama coaching staff has certainly been on a hot streak when it comes to the recruiting trail. In July, Alabama landed eight commitments between both the 2023 and the 2024 recruiting classes.

On Tuesday, 2024 defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe announced that he was committed to the Crimson Tide via his Twitter account. He is the third recruit to commit to Alabama’s 2024 recruiting class.

Mbakwe attends at Clay-Chalkville in Pinson, Alabama. Last season, he played on both sides of the ball for the Cougars. However, many expect him to focus solely on the defensive side of the ball when he arrives in Tuscaloosa. That could change in the future, but he appears to be recruited as a cornerback.

During his junior season, Mbakwe played a key role in the Cougars being able to win the Class 6A Alabama state title. Mbakwe recorded 11 tackles and two interceptions at cornerback. On the offensive side of the ball, he reeled in 36 receptions for 677 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

Alabama may not be finished recruiting his high school as the Tide are firmly in the mix to land his teammate, wide receiver Mario Craver. The two of them play football and run track at Clay-Chalkville.

Good morning, Tide fans! Welcome back to our Thursday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone has had a good week as we are one step closer to the weekend.

It’s decision day for one of the nation’s most coveted defenders in the class of 2023, [autotag]Bai Jobe[/autotag].

The four-star prospect has narrowed his list of schools down to three ahead of his decision. Alabama will be fighting off Michigan State and Oklahoma for the 6-foot-5 defender.

Currently, the Spartans are considered the heavy favorite for Jobe according to On3’s RPM, owning a 93.7% chance of landing his commitment. The Spartans also have six crystal balls in for Jobe on 247Sports.

Jobe will announce his commitment today, July 7 at 4:00 p.m. CT.

Let’s take a look at a few other stories involving the Crimson Tide.

Alabama Morning Drive: Recapping a busy weekend in recruiting

Alabama hosts yet another impressive weekend of official visits.

Good Monday morning, Tide fans! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone enjoyed their Father’s Day weekend and was able to spend some time with all the father figures in your life.

Despite it being a holiday weekend, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama had a busy weekend when it comes to recruiting. Several of the nation’s top prospects were in town over the weekend for official visits. Coach Saban and the staff even took the time to extend some offers to prospects outside of the 2023 class.

Over the next few minutes, we will present you with some of the best tweets from several of the prospects over this past weekend.

Without wasting too much time let’s just dive right into the meat of the article.

2024 cornerback from Alabama puts the Tigers in his top ten

Auburn landed in the top ten for 2024 cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe.

2024 cornerback and Alabama native Jaylen Mbakwe released his top ten schools on Sunday. One of the schools listed was the Auburn Tigers.

Mbakwe is regarded as a five-star by 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He is listed at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds. The product of Clay-Chalkville High School is rated as the No. 3 cornerback in his class as well as the No. 1 rated recruit in the state of Alabama. Mbakwe is a very versatile athlete that plays both sides of the ball for the Cougars. Not to mention, he also runs track. He could play both sides of the ball, but recruiting experts are anticipating that he will stay on the defensive side.

Auburn was one of the schools that offered Mbakwe early on in the recruiting process. The Tigers offered him on June 24, 2021. The other schools that he put in his top ten are Alabama, Florida State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Louisville, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Interestingly enough, he has the Iron Bowl rivalry in the mix, and that will likely be the case until he makes his final decision.

The Tigers could certainly implement the native of Pinson, Alabama, into their defense. His athleticism and ability to play both sides of the ball give him an advantage over other players on the field. It will be interesting to see how his recruitment unfolds over the next few months.

With Clemson offer, ‘Christmas came early’ for elite Alabama CB

Among the prospects who picked up an offer from Clemson on Wednesday, June 1, when the Tigers began dishing out offers to class of 2024 recruits, was an elite defensive back from the Yellowhammer State – Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville four-star cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe.

The 6-foot, 170-pound rising junior – ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Alabama, No. 3 cornerback nationally and No. 8 overall prospect for the 2024 class, per 247Sports – reacted to the big offer from the Tigers in an interview with The Clemson Insider shortly after reporting the offer via social media Wednesday night.

“They obviously don’t offer 2024s until now,” Mbakwe told TCI. “So to get it on the first day, it feels great.”

Mbakwe was informed of the offer during a conversation with cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

“Me and Coach Reed talked,” Mbakwe said. “He’s been following me for two years now, so we talked. Him and my family talked, and he was just telling me that Christmas came early for me, and he just offered me.”

Mbakwe checks the boxes that Reed and the Tigers look for, both as a football player and a person.

“He was just telling me that I’m great on and off the field, I’m a great individual, have great character, I’m a ballplayer obviously,” Mbakwe said.

Mbakwe participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer, and he returned to campus for a visit earlier this year in April.

“That visit was great,” he said. “They’re building new facilities, it’s great. They’ve got facilities for former players so they can come back and work out and have their own locker room and stuff like that. Their facilities are great. They’re still building more things, but I feel like once they get done with it, it’ll be great.”

Mbakwe told TCI that he might make it back to Clemson for another visit next Saturday (June 11).

The Tigers joined Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Texas A&M and many others on Mbakwe’s list of more than two dozen total offers.

Mbakwe said his recruitment is “still pretty wide open right now,” and he “probably won’t make a decision till next year, the start of my senior season.”

Where do the Tigers stand with him right now after pulling the trigger on an offer?

“I’m very interested in it (Clemson) because they compete for a national championship every year,” he said. “They’ve got a great reputation of putting out DBs, smart coaches. So, I’m very interested.”

As a sophomore last season, Mbakwe helped Clay-Chalkville to a 15-0 record and a state championship.

An elite cornerback from Alabama reported an offer from Clemson on Wednesday.

Clay-Chalkville High School (Pinson, Ala.) 2024 four-star Jaylen Mbakwe announced the offer from the Tigers via social media late Wednesday night.

Mbakwe (5-11, 170) is ranked as high as the No. 3 cornerback and No. 8 overall prospect in the 2024 class by 247Sports.

The Clemson Insider spoke with Mbawke recently and asked him what a potential scholarship offer from the Tigers would mean.

“It would be great because they compete for national championships every year and they have a great reputation of sending DBs to the NFL,” he said.

Best reactions from the latest recruiting weekend with the Oklahoma Sooners

Check out some of the best reactions from the Oklahoma Sooners’ latest recruiting event.

The Oklahoma Sooners hosted another crop of recruits over the weekend including players from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 recruiting cycles. Players and their families took in all that the University of Oklahoma and its football program had to offer on a beautiful spring day.

Joining the Sooners over the weekend was highly-coveted five-star defensive tackle [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country according to the On3 Consensus. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine currently has the Sooners ahead of the Texas A&M Aggies by a slight margin. The only Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports comes from Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong who believes that Hicks will land with the Aggies.

[autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his crew hosted another highly-touted defensive lineman in the 2023 class in [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] out of Kissimmee, FL. The four-star DL, is the No. 67 player in the 2023 class and the No. 9 defensive lineman. Both On3 and 247Sports believe Florida is the leader to land LeBlanc’s commitment but we’ve seen this coaching staff swoop in and flip players with less time and opportunity.

Oklahoma also hosted a couple of four-star athletes out of the southeast in [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag], Jr. and [autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag].

With another recruiting visit in the books, let’s look at some of the best reactions from recruits, family, and analysts.
