Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts

Boston is likely looking for players who’d be able to help right away, or a player with some upside to stash abroad or as a two way player.

As the 2023 NBA draft draws ever closer, the Boston Celtics have kept themselves very busy working out prospective targets for the top of the 2023 draft’s second round, with a pick owed them from either the Portland Trail Blazers (35th overall) or the Houston Rockets (33rd overall), pending the outcome of complicated protections which will be determined the night of the draft lottery.

The Celtics are looking for players who would be able to help a little depth-wise right away, or perhaps a player with some upside to stash abroad or as a two way player with the extra slot having been added in the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

Let’s take a look at the prospects we know the team has worked out (thanks to Rookie Wire’s Cody Taylor) that we have not already covered on the Celtics Wire (see our previous articles on wing Landers Nolley II, big man Oscar Tshiebwe, and center Isaiah Miranda).

Jaylen Forbes to work out for the Thunder in pre-draft visit

Jaylen Forbes will work out for the Thunder in pre-draft visit, per @RookieWire

The 2023 NBA draft combined is scheduled to take place soon from May 15 to May 21, which means the draft season is right around the corner.

It looks like the Oklahoma City Thunder are underway with draft evaluations as they have begun conducting pre-draft visits. One of those visits includes Tulane guard Jaylen Forbes.

In an interview with Rookie Wire’s Cody Taylor, Forbes detailed that he plans on visiting with the Thunder sometime next week. The full interview can be read here.

“Everything has been good. I have just been staying in the gym to keep trying to get better. I’m still at school right now. I still have a couple of final exams I have to finish. After I work out with Oklahoma City next week, I’ll be traveling to Dallas and that’s where I’ll be working out at.”

The 22-year-old averaged 18.5 points on 42.5% shooting, five rebounds and 1.7 assists in 31 games last season. He also shot 38.8% from 3 on 7.3 attempts.

The 6-foot-5, 185-pound senior spent four seasons in college — one with Alabama and the final three with Tulane. Forbes is currently being projected as a potential second-round pick, which the Thunder own two picks in.

The 2023 NBA draft is scheduled to happen on Thursday, June 22.

Tulane guard Jaylen Forbes: ‘I’m one of the better shooters in the draft’

Rookie Wire caught up with Forbes this week to discuss testing the draft, receiving advice from former teammate Herb Jones and more.

Following a sensational senior year with the Tulane Green Wave, Jaylen Forbes is looking to make a name for himself after declaring for the 2023 NBA draft.

Forbes was named to the All-AAC second team after averaging a career-high 18.5 points, five rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.7 assists in 31 games on 38.8% shooting from 3-point range. He was second in the conference in minutes per game (36.5) after ranking first the two previous years.

He started his college career at the University of Alabama. He played one season with the Crimson Tide and transfered to Tulane. He earned all-conference honors in each of his three years with the Green Wave and has improved with each season.

He emerged as a tremendous scorer over that time.

The 6-foot-5 guard finished third in the conference in scoring and fourth in 3-pointers (88) last season. He scored in double figures in all but two games and produced 14 20-point games, including a season-high 31 points in a win over SMU on Jan. 11.

Forbes helped the Green Wave (20-11, 12-6) to their first 20-win season since 2013 when they were in Conference USA. He was one of eight players in the country to average at least 18 points and five rebounds with 80 total 3-pointers.

Now, Forbes is focused on the pre-draft process.

He announced on March 29 that he would declare for the draft with the option to return to school next season. He is currently preparing for the draft in New Orleans while also maintaining his schoolwork at Tulane. He will eventually be training in Dallas, Texas.

Two former Alabama MBB players announce transfer destinations

Two former members of the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team, Jaylen Forbes and Raymond Hawkins, have announced where they will be playing for the 2020 season.

Smith, a guard who just finished his freshman season, was a player Alabama fans were familiar with in his lone year with the program. He stood at 6 feet 4 inches tall. In his time with the Crimson Tide, Forbes averaged just over 10 minutes a game and a field goal percentage of 32%.

Forbes will be transferring to Tulane for his final year of eligibility.

Hawkins, a center who originally committed to the University of Buffalo, followed Nate Oats to Alabama and did not see much playing time, in his one season with the Crimson Tide, Hawkins played in six games.

The California native announced via Twitter that he will be transferring to Long Beach State.

These are the first two commits of Oats to leave Alabama during is time as head coach. However, he, nor the fans, seem to be worried as they look ahead to the top-20 recruiting class he has put together for the 2020 season.

Report: Alabama basketball guard Jaylen Forbes entering transfer portal

Alabama basketball’s Jaylen Forbes will enter the transfer portal, according to Jeff Goodman with Stadium.

Alabama basketball finalized its 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday with a collection of several impressive prospects. But it was also announced that the Crimson Tide would be losing a player as well.

Jeff Goodman with Stadium announced via Twitter that rising sophomore Jaylen Forbes would be transferring, according to a source:

The move, while not overly surprising, does mean another potential loss for a promising basketball team entering the 2020-21 season. Forbes played sparingly, averaging 10.4 minutes per game, during his true freshman season.

The 6-foot-4, 186-pound guard also averaged 2.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.5 assist while shooting 33.3-percent from beyond the arc.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Forbes was actually Alabama’s second highest-rated commitment for the 2019 class, slotting him behind Juwan Gary, who suffered a season-ending injury prior to the season, and just ahead of freshman standout Jaden Shackelford.

Forbes was rated the No. 104 overall prospect, No. 18 shoot guard and No. 2 player from the state of Mississippi.
