Opportunity for Jayden Reed, Packers pass game if OL can hold up vs. Vikings blitz

Rookie WR Jayden Reed has a big opportunity vs. the Vikings if the Packers can handle the blitz.

Sunday night’s playoff-like matchup with the Minnesota Vikings feels like a game where the Green Bay Packers offense is going to lean more heavily on the passing game, specifically with there being big-game potential for Jayden Reed.

The Packers are already most likely going to be without Christian Watson, who is listed as doubtful, while Dontayvion Wicks is questionable after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday and being “very limited,” as Matt LaFleur put it, on Friday. From the sounds of it, Wicks is a true game-time decision.

The current state of the receiver room could put the playmaking burden in the passing game on Reed’s shoulders, especially if Wicks cannot go. However, from a matchup perspective, the opportunity should be there for him as well.

“He’s just a heck of a competitor,” said LaFleur of Reed. “He’s helped us not only in the pass game obviously, but just getting the ball in his hands on reverses, arounds, whatever it may be, screens. I love how he competes, both in the run game and pass game. He’s made plays when given opportunities.”

This is a blitz-heavy Vikings defense, something the Packers are fairly accustomed to seeing, given their recent opponents. In Green Bay’s last six games, four of their opponents rank in the top eight in blitz rate this season. In fact, since Week 11, Love has been the most blitzed quarterback in football.

“They’re not afraid,” said LaFleur of the Vikings’ defense prior to their Week 8 matchup. “Sometimes, it’s going to look like a punt rush, and you’ve got to have a plan for that and go out there and execute that plan, but it does present a lot of challenges. Those guys are fast; they’re physical.”

In this stretch of games, the Green Bay offensive line and Jordan Love have held up well, with 67 percent of Love’s pass attempts during that six-game span coming from a clean pocket–the 12th-best rate in football. Overall, against the blitz, Love has completed 67.3 percent of his throws at 7.6 yards per attempt with four touchdowns to one interception.

From the defensive perspective, blitzing can cause chaos and confusion up front, leading to pressures, which then result in mistakes or sacks. But on the flip side, if the offense is able to handle the blitzers, there are then one-on-one opportunities in the passing game to take advantage of.

Minnesota is going to be without top slot cornerback Byron Murphy – where the bulk of Reed’s snaps come from – who has already been ruled out due to an injury. Safeties Josh Metellus and Camryn Bynum rank second and third on the team in slot snaps this season, with both ranking in the top three among safeties in receptions and yards allowed from the nickel.

To maximize their opportunities in the passing game and to make sure Green Bay doesn’t become one-dimensional and predictable against a blitz-heavy opponent, involving Aaron Jones and the run game will, of course, be an important factor as always.

However, compared to last week in Carolina, moving the ball on the ground – even with Jones – may prove to be a bigger challenge against Minnesota, who is allowing only 3.7 yards per carry–the fifth-best mark this season. Interior defensive linemen Harrison Phillips and Jonathan Buford both rank in the top 10 in run stops among their position group.

Hopefully, Wicks will be a go. His ability as a route runner to create separation, along with picking up yards after the catch, will give him the chance to thrive in these one-on-one situations, which the Packers receivers will likely see a lot of. Also not to be forgotten is Romeo Doubs, who has provided a reliable presence throughout the course of the season, leading the team in targets and touchdowns.

“I think Rome’s been very consistent,” said LaFleur this week. “Obviously, he’s made a lot of big-time plays for us, and in particular, it’s happened to come out this way down in the red area. You can always count on him to go out there, and when given the opportunity, he’s made some big plays for us this year.

“I think he’s really grown, I would say, over the course of the last two seasons, just in terms of being so consistent and so reliable. That’s a great comfort for our offense, for our football team, for Jordan. Knowing that he can always count on Rome to go out there and get the job done.”

With so much youth and inexperience coming into the season, the wide receiver position was one of the biggest question marks on this Packers team. But now, with two games remaining, it has grown to be a position of depth, with the Packers able to rely on six or seven players if needed.

With Watson out and Wicks’ status unknown, Green Bay will again need to rely on that depth this week, along with getting key contributions from Reed and Doubs, but if the offensive line can hold up in pass protection, the opportunity for some big plays in the passing game should be available.

“Our wideout room is extremely deep,” said offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich on Thursday. “It’s deeper than it’s been in a long time. It’s a testament to our personnel guys, getting the right guys in here. It’s a testament to coach (Jason) Vrable and Quinshon (Odom), coaching them in that room and their mindset. The way they practice.”

Vikings vs. Packers: 4 defensive keys for week 17

It’s do or die time for the Vikings. Minnesota’s defense has to follow these four keys if they want to win on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

This is their last chance.

The Minnesota Vikings get one more chance to salvage their playoff chances as they face the Green Bay Packers in U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday Night Football at 7:20 p.m. CST.

Minnesota has a chance to atone for dropping the past two with a good performance against a surging Green Bay team.

After starting 3-6 this season, the Packers have found a way back into the playoff conversation, and it’s been behind the play of their offense.

Since their meeting in week eight, Green Bay’s offense has been fourth in EPA/play, sixth in success rate, third in EPA/dropback and tenth in EPA/rush. Jordan Love has come into his own as a passer. He’s sixth in Adjusted net yards per pass attempt, second in passing yards (2095) and third in passing touchdowns (16) in that span.

On the other hand, Minnesota has been in a bit of a slump after their improbable 3-0 win against the Raiders at the beginning of the month. In the last two weeks, they have allowed 57 points, more than the four games before them combined. They’ve allowed the fourth-most EPA/play and are third-worst in success rate.

This defense must follow these four keys to success to get back on track and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Packers WR Jayden Reed excited to return vs. Vikings: ‘I feel a lot better and I’m ready to go’

Packers rookie WR Jayden Reed is feeling good and ready to return after missing last week with chest and toe injuries.

The playing statuses of Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks are up in the air, but the Green Bay Packers should return rookie receiver Jayden Reed for Sunday night’s must-win game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Reed, who is second on the team in receptions and tied for first in touchdowns, missed last week’s win over the Carolina Panthers with toe and chest injuries. The rookie receiver has been back on the practice field each of the last two days and is expecting to play Sunday night.

“I was full go today. I feel really good,” Reed said Thursday. “I’m just ready to be back out there with the guys and go out there and get the job done…I feel a lot better and I’m ready to go.”

Reed has 54 catches for 592 yards and six touchdowns and 11 rushes for 119 yards and two scores over 14 games. Last week was the first missed game of his NFL career.

“Definitely itching to go back out there on Sunday, in this caliber of game,” Reed said.

The Packers must beat the Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium to keep their season alive. Watson and Wicks both haven’t practiced this week, complicating their path to playing on Sunday night. If neither can go, more will be asked of Reed in the playmaking department.

Reed said he’s excited to get back on the field and compete in a big game.

In the first meeting with the Vikings, Reed caught four passes for 83 yards, but he was also the target on Jordan Love’s lone interception. Since the Week 8 loss to the Vikings, Reed has scored touchdowns in five of the last seven games and has solidified himself as one of the offense’s top playmakers.

Could Sunday night be another breakout game opportunity? The Vikings are dealing with several injuries at cornerback, and the defense’s top slot cornerback — Byron Murphy — hasn’t practiced each of the last two days. Expect Reed to be a top target for Love on Sunday night.

Panthers Week 16 inactives: CJ Henderson a healthy scratch vs. Packers

The Panthers have scratched six players ahead of their Week 16 matchup against the Packers, including CB CJ Henderson.

All of this afternoon’s scratches are healthy ones for the Carolina Panthers.

Headlining the list of inactives ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers is cornerback CJ Henderson, who played zero defensive snaps in Week 14 and six in Week 15. Since returning from his concussion, the soon-to-be free agent has accounted for just 28 of a possible 166 defensive snaps.

Joining Henderson on the sideline will be wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who has also been phased out of late. The former second-round pick has not played since Carolina’s Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Here’s the full list of inactives for the Panthers:

  • CB CJ Henderson
  • OT Ricky Lee
  • OLB Eku Leota
  • WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
  • WR Mike Strachan
  • DL Chris Wormley

The Packers, however, are not as healthy as the home team. Their naughty list includes a handful of key names:

  • LB De’Vondre Campbell
  • LB Brenton Cox Jr.
  • OT Caleb Jones
  • WR Jayden Reed
  • CB Robert Rochell
  • S Darnell Savage
  • WR Christian Watson

Fantasy football waiver wire: Week 16 free agent forecast

Here are the top waiver wire targets for Week 16 of fantasy football.

For the majority of leagues, the first round of the fantasy football playoffs comes to an end Monday night after a wild weekend of games in Week 15.

Hopefully, you were able to get through the week unscathed with a victory, but there were plenty of injuries that hit managers right in the starting lineup.

Among the players with injuries to monitor enter Week 16 include Ja’Marr Chase, Keenan Allen, Josh Jacobs, Alexander Mattison, Brian Robinson Jr., Michael Pittman Jr., Zack Moss, AJ Dillon and Isiah Pacheco.

The bye weeks also are finally over, so it will be just good old-fashioned fantasy football. With trade deadlines concluded in the majority of leagues as well, the waiver wire becomes the most vital tool for fantasy managers over the three weeks.

We’re also getting to the point of the season in which stashing FAAB isn’t as crucial. Don’t hesitate to spend a bit more on a player who might give your team an edge down the stretch.

We’ll be taking a look at the top available players rostered in Yahoo leagues, using the 75% rostered mark as the threshold. If you have any questions about prioritizing a certain player over another, don’t be afraid to hit me up on X, formerly Twitter, (@KevinHickey11). Your questions and comments are always welcome!

We also will be taking a look at some deeper players to stash and the top streaming options for the upcoming week.

Fantasy football waiver wire recommendations refer to 12-team league formats, unless specifically stated.

Check back for any updates throughout Monday and Tuesday as more injury news becomes available.

Chasing Ambulances

QB Will Levis – Injured his ankle but said afterward that he is alright and that the injury “could’ve been a lot worse and it was definitely scarier in the moment than it was.” He carries minimal fantasy value anyway, but had kept DeAndre Hopkins relevant.

QB Zach Wilson – Received a concussion in the shutout loss to the Dolphins. He was replaced by Trevor Siemian who would take the start this week against the visiting Commanders, the NFL version of Santa Claus coming down the chimney. Siemian was even worse than Wilson when he came into the loss to the Fins, but he may have some value against the worst defense in the NFL.

RB Zack Moss – Left the win over the Steelers with another arm injury and X-Rays were negative at the stadium. He was ruled out when he couldn’t grip the ball well.  He was replaced by a tag team of Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson which could repeat this week if Moss remains out. But, Jonathan Taylor may return this week.

WR Michael Pittman – Left the game in the second quarter when he got a concussion after getting blasted on a tackle. He may end up missing this week, and if so they will cobble together the tight ends and other wideouts to replace his production.

RB Keaton Mitchell – Broke into the open and then crumpled almost untouched in the win over the Jaguars. He is already reported to be gone for the season with a serious knee injury. Gus Edwards and Justice Hill will take over his production, but be much slower about it.

WR Zay Jones – Already missed time with a knee injury this year, and now suffered a hamstring strain in the loss to the Ravens. Jamal Agnew will help cover for him if needed, but the Jaguars are running out of wideouts with Christian Kirk already gone.

WR Ja’Marr Chase – Injured the AC joint in his shoulder and is considered “day to day.’ HC Zac Taylor said his availability for the Steelers game will be determined later in the week.

WR Jayden Reed –  Left the loss to the Buccaneers with a toe injury and will have a status update later in the week.

TE Hunter Henry – Injured his knee in the loss to the Chiefs at the start of the fourth quarter and did not return. His status will be updated by Wednesday.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

QB Dart Throw – For some leagues, Week 15 is the playoffs and even the league championship for large contests. And the Top-8 fantasy quarterbacks for when you need them the most – Baker Mayfield, Jared Goff, Joe Flacco, Aidan O’Connell, Brock Purdy, Easton Stick, Jake Browning, and Nick Mullens.  Basically, all names on your waiver wire in Week 1.  Maybe even a week or two ago for most of them.  That’s disappointing after the top quarterbacks have been so good all year… until now.

WR Justin Jefferson – He made it all the way through the game without injury. Jefferson led the Vikings with ten targets that became seven catches for 84 yards. That, in turn, helped Jordan Addison (6-111, 2 TD) succeed against lesser coverage. Nick Mullens (303 yards, 2 TD) looks like he’ll stick for now.

RB Bijan Robinson – One of the biggest questions that will come out of 2023 is why did the Falcons have such uneven usage of a supposed generational talent? Robinson faced one of the weakest defenses in the NFL – Carolina – and was limited to only seven rushes for 11 yards while Tyler Allgeier handled 14 rushes for 45 yards. Robinson is already the leading rusher for the Falcons. Seven carries! They already drafted a generational talent in Kyle Pitts and then don’t use him. Now they have Robinson and do not use him. If they use a first-round pick on a quarterback, should we assume up front that he won’t get to play?

QB Joe Flacco – The Browns’ latest quarterback just threw for 374 yards and two scored on the Bears. He passed for 311 yards and three scores in Week 14. He’s only played three games and already has the two highest-producing games for Cleveland.

RB Raheem Mostert – He’s 31 years old and  has already topped his career marks in carries, yards and scores. This week versus the Jets, he ran for 42 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. That a Miami team record with 20 touchdowns on the season, with three games left to play. Does he age in reverse? He’s playing out his ninth NFL season with more touchdowns than he’s scored in all other years combined.

RB James Conner – The Cardinals’ primary rusher ran for 105 yards and two scores at the Steelers in Week 13 and then went in his bye. He returned to face the 49ers on Sunday and reeled off 86 yards and a score on 14 rushes, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. And mostly on fantasy benches across the land.

QB Josh Allen – The Bills beat the Cowboys 31-10 in a laugher and Josh Allen spoke about his newfound wisdom after the game, suggesting that it is okay that he didn’t have to take the team on his back and do everything for the offense. He can allow James Cook to score twice with 227 total yards. Allen only passed for 94 yards and a touchdown but did run in one score. And that is not okay, at least not without warning during fantasy playoffs.

TE Isaiah Likely – Mark Andrews was lost after Week 12 and the Ravens No. 2 tight end stepped up these last two weeks with five catches for around 75 yards and a touchdown in each. That was more yardage than Andrews had in all but two games this year.

TE Sam LaPorta – The rookie just caught three touchdowns on his five catches for 56 yards in the win over the Broncos. That gives him an NFL tight end lead with nine touchdowns – no other in the position has scored more than six. Ironically, the Lions old tight end T.J. Hockenson is the No. 1 and Travis Kelce is No. 2. And LaPorta is No. 3 and just ten fantasy points away from being the No. 1 – as a rookie.

Huddle player of the week

Syndication: Democrat and Chronicle

James Cook  –  He already had improved in the second half of the season and against the previously feared Cowboys defense, Cook turned in a career-best performance with 179 yards and a score on 25 carries, plus caught two passes for 42 yards and a second touchdown.  Cook demolished the Cowboys almost single-handedly.

Packers WR Jayden Reed has ankle injury but avoids concussion

Green Bay Packers rookie receiver Jayden Reed has a new ankle injury but he passed initial concussion testing coming out of Monday night’s loss to the New York Giants.

Green Bay Packers receiver Jayden Reed has a new ankle injury, but the rookie passed initial concussion testing coming out of Monday night’s loss to the New York Giants.

Reed was evaluated for a concussion after taking a big hit on the Packers’ two-point conversion play late in the fourth quarter.

Coach Matt LaFleur said Reed told him he was “fine” in the immediate aftermath of the contest.

The Packers listed Reed on the first Week 15 injury report with an ankle injury. He was estimated as a limited participant.

According to Packers Wire contributor Paul Bretl, Reed said he didn’t know when the ankle injury happened but was confident he would be “good to go” for Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Not only does Reed not have a concussion, but the Packers are no longer reporting Reed with a chest injury, which he initially suffered last month but played through.

Reed caught a career-high eight passes on 10 targets but gained only 27 receiving yards against the Giants. He did rush four times for 38 yards and a 16-yard touchdown, his second rushing score of the 2023 season. Reed has a touchdown in four of the last five games.

Through 13 games, Reed has 48 catches for 540 yards and five touchdowns and 11 rushes for 119 yards and two more scores.

The Packers face the Buccaneers on Sunday. Receivers Christian Watson (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) were both estimated as non-participants at Wednesday’s practice.

Jayden Reed high-steps in for TD to give Packers early lead vs. Giants

The Packers lead 7-0 over the Giants after a Jayden Reed 16-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

The Green Bay Packers took a first-quarter lead for the third consecutive game when rookie receiver Jayden Reed high-stepped into the end zone from 16 yards out to give Green Bay a 7-0 lead over the New York Giants on Monday night.

Reed took a jet sweep moving from his left to right, got the edge and went untouched for the game’s first score.

The touchdown was Reed’s seventh of the season and his second rushing touchdown. The second-round pick has touchdown in four of the last five games.

Here’s Reed’s touchdown:

The scoring drive was extended on a fourth-down conversion by rookie Dontayvion Wicks. He was initially ruled short of the first down but a review gave him the necessary yardage to move the sticks.

A.J. Dillon’s 35-yard catch following the conversion got the Packers going.

Reed’s first three touches of the night have gained 25 yards.
