2023 four-star edge rusher commits to UNC

2023 four-star edge rusher Jaybron Harvey announced his commitment to the UNC football program on Friday afternoon.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program inked their third commitment of the week when 2023 edge rusher [autotag]Jaybron Harvey[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Tar Heels.

Harvey is a four-star prospect from Souther (Nc) High School. He is ranked No. 204 overall in the 247Sports rankings and the No. 6 player in the state of North Carolina.

Before his commitment, Harvey had visited Louisville, Oklahoma and South Carolina. He took a visit to UNC on June 3.

In 2021 as a junior, Harvey put up enormous numbers. He had 129 tackles and 28.5 sacks on the season. He also finished with 35 tackles for loss.

247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn broke down Harvey’s skillset.

“Verified size with length. Has frame and skill set for edge rusher. Will be able to play at 230 pounds. Incredibly productive player with 28 sacks, 129 tackles as junior. Plays both sides of ball in various roles at Southern. High-level athlete with excellent burst at snap. Twitchy prospect gets off quickly and stay lows while eating up space in first few steps. Plays standing up and with hand on ground. Has motor and works to fight through double teams. Changes direction well and chases down plays on back side. Timing and anticipation of snap are excellent. Shows closing speed and body control. Uses a swim move at times, especially when feigning outside and moving inside. Has to continue to develop in the weight room. Relies heavily on physical talent but must refine technique. At times loops to the backfield rather than dipping shoulder and exploding toward ball carrier. Has to show he can be consistent in stacking and shedding when ball is run at him. Has athleticism to drop into coverage but needs to work on technique of it. Multi-year starter at Top 20 Power 5 program. Size could keep from being high NFL draft pick but has NFL draft potential.”

Harvey becomes the 10th commitment in the class of 2023 for Mack Brown and the Tar Heels.

New defensive end target emerges for Clemson

Clemson has begun to expand its recruiting board at the defensive end position.

Even after the addition of St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) four-star edge rusher David Ojiegbe, defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall and other members of Clemson’s defensive coaching staff are in pursuit of some additional targets in the class of 2023.

One of those targets is Southern (Durham, N.C.) four-star Jaybron Harvey, who The Clemson Insider has chatted back and forth with this week. After talking with Hall Wednesday, Harvey messaged us to tell us that Hall really likes him and this past Friday, he was reevaluating everybody on his board and would call him this weekend.

Harvey — a 6-foot-4, 216-pound rising senior — was unsure if that call was going to be about an offer, but Hall did say that a big thing with Clemson is getting on campus.

The Tar Heel State target was able to shed further light on his Clemson interest and his relationship with Hall, as well as the rest of his recruitment this weekend.

“They said they really liked me, how I look, my game, my personality…but the big thing they said was for me to come down to campus,” Harvey said.

“My relationship with Coach Hall is good,” he continued. “It’s getting even better along the way as I take this journey call after call.”

In addition to Ojiegbe, Clemson has dispensed offers to less than 20 defensive ends in the 2023 recruiting class. While about seven of them have confirmed their plans to participate in Clemson’s official visit weekend from June 3-5, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Tigers will automatically earn their commitments.

That’s why Hall is still tinkering with his defensive end board and why a player like Harvey is on Clemson’s radar.

“An offer from Clemson is big time,” Harvey said, “because you know it’s Clemson, a big-time school, and them giving me an opportunity to play for them is everything.”

Asked which schools were currently recruiting him the hardest, Harvey only mentioned North Carolina. While he’s still trying to figure out when he’ll eventually visit Clemson, he’s set four visits to Oklahoma, South Carolina, Louisville and, of course, UNC.

Harvey, who 247Sports considers to be a top-25 edge rusher in his class, describes himself as being a “twitchy, fast and powerful” player, who has the natural pass-rush ability and good play recognition.

2023 four-star EDGE Jaybron Harvey out of North Carolina earns Oklahoma offer

With their noted success in the southeast, Brent Venables and his staff sent an offer out to 2023 defensive end Jaybron Harvey out of NC.

Miguel Chavis has been a busy, busy man since taking his first major coaching position as the Oklahoma Sooners’ defensive ends coach. He hit the ground running and landed a few late 2022 targets in R Mason Thomas and Kevonte Henry.

In his continued pursuit of defensive ends for the 2023 class Chavis finds himself targeting Jaybron Harvey, a four-star edge rusher out of North Carolina. Harvey plays in Durham at Southern High School.

Harvey’s a true edge player in terms of build and explosiveness and can play standing up or with his hand on the ground. His junior year saw him finish with 28 sacks and over 100 tackles. His scouting report on 247 Sports reads as such:

Verified size with length. – Brian Dohn, 247Sports National recruiting analyst

While the Sooners are in pretty good spots for the likes of Bai Jobe and Adepoju Adebawore, taking a long hard look at Harvey makes a lot of sense, especially with Jobe’s recruitment still growing and things far from being locked up with any prospects.

Chavis also was part of the same defensive staff led by Venables at Clemson that has had some significant success recruiting defensive linemen in the state of North Carolina over the years. Their success and connections on the recruiting trail amongst North Carolina high schools could pay dividends as they look to position themselves in the race for Harvey.

Recruits react to weekend in Norman visiting with the Oklahoma Sooners

Check out what recruits had to say after visiting with the Oklahoma Sooners over the weekend.

It’s recruiting season for Oklahoma Football and over the last couple of weeks since the Sooners’ spring game, the key figures at OU have been out on the road meeting with high schools and building relationships across the country. Beyond recruiting particular kids, Oklahoma is recruiting schools and their coaches to buy into the vision that [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] is putting in place in Norman.

The program welcomed a host of high school athletes across the next three recruiting classes to give them a taste of what Oklahoma football is all about.

Over the weekend, they’ve put out offers to Kristopher Jones, Jordan Pride, Damani Maxson, Jaybron Harvey, and several others. They’re leaving no stone unturned as they look for players that fit what they’re trying to put together.

One notable name in for a weekend visit was transfer wide receiver L.V. Bunkley-Shelton, who is looking for a new home after playing the last two seasons at Arizona State, amassing 44 receptions for 518 yards and two touchdowns.

Safe to say the athletes in attendance came away impressed with their time in Norman and we’ve collected some of the best reactions from the latest recruiting weekend put on by the Oklahoma Sooners.
