Will the Chicago Bulls regret letting Javon Freeman-Liberty walk?

The Chicago Bulls gained a great chance to look at some of their young talent during the summer league, but Javon Freeman-Liberty was by far the best player on the squad. The 23-year-old point guard dominated the offensive end and played hard on defense, earning all-summer league second-team honors for his efforts.

At the conclusion of the summer league, a great deal of uncertainty surrounded Freeman-Liberty’s future with the Bulls. Ultimately, Chicago filled its two-way spots and re-signed Ayo Dosunmu, leaving little room for Freeman-Liberty to earn a role. In turn, he signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors.

Elias Schuster of Bleacher Nation wrote about Freeman-Liberty’s decision to join the Raptors in a recent article, and he said it scares him because Toronto has a history of great developmental projects.

“The fact the Toronto Raptors were the organization to take a chance on Freeman-Liberty scares the crap out of me,” Schuster wrote. “They have a keen eye for adding the kind of under-the-radar players that can quickly turn into impact guys. Not to mention, they’re just remarkably good at developing young talent. So, yeah, I’m now fully expecting for Freeman-Liberty to get an opportunity later this year in their short-handed backcourt and for Bulls fans to explode the moment he drops 20/5/5.”

With Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, Chris Boucher and more blossoming while with the Raptors, there’s a chance that Freeman-Liberty is their next undrafted success story.

If he becomes a rotation player in Toronto, will the Bulls regret letting Freeman-Liberty go?

Report: Bulls ‘didn’t make an offer’ for Javon Freeman-Liberty

The Chicago Bulls reportedly “didn’t make an offer” to sign Javon Freeman-Liberty.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

For the Chicago Bulls, the summer league was a perfect opportunity to evaluate their young talent. They are aiming to make the playoffs next year, but to secure a brighter future, they should look to add youth to the roster because they don’t have many promising youngsters.

Javon Freeman-Liberty quickly stole the show for the Bulls. He emerged as the best player on their summer league roster. And it wasn’t close. The 23-year-old point guard played amazingly, but in the end, he signed a two-way deal with the Toronto Raptors. The Bulls weren’t able to hang onto him.

According to Daniel Greenberg on Twitter, three NBA teams made Freeman-Liberty a two-way contract offer, and Chicago wasn’t one of them.

“3 NBA teams offered Chicago’s own Javon Freeman-Liberty two-way deals but he turned those down and ended up signing with the Toronto Raptors, his agents Luke and Keith Glass tell me. The Bulls didn’t make an offer,” Greenberg tweeted.

In five appearances in the summer league, Freeman-Liberty averaged 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1 blocks per game while shooting 49.3% from the floor and 46.2% shooting from behind the 3-point line.

As noted, he was easily the best player on the Bulls’ squad, surpassing the likes of Dalen Terry and rookie Julian Phillips.

Chicago’s decision to bring back Ayo Dosunmu likely put an end to the idea of them also re-signing Freeman-Liberty, and from his perspective, there will undoubtedly be more opportunities to earn minutes in Toronto.

Should the Bulls have brought back Freeman-Liberty?

Bulls explored ways to keep Javon Freeman-Liberty before Raptors deal

The Chicago Bulls wanted to keep Javon Freeman-Liberty, but he decided to join the Toronto Raptors.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8222″]

The Chicago Bulls entered the offseason with the goal of improving their roster. They were against the idea of a rebuild, and they seemingly still are. In turn, their moves were designed to get back into the postseason.

They re-signed Nikola Vucevic, Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu and signed Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig in free agency. They drafted Julian Phillips in the second round, and after the draft, they signed rookie Adama Sanogo to a two-way contract. With Onrulap Bitim and Justin Lewis also earning two-way spots, Chicago’s roster has one spot available (a standard deal).

This means that they had to let summer league standout Javon Freeman-Liberty walk. According to KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, the Bulls wanted to keep him.

“Some believed Freeman-Liberty would be elevated to a contract with the Bulls,” Johnson wrote. “Yet, the Bulls solidified their two-way spots on Friday, signing Onuralp Bitim to their final spot. Adama Sanogo and Justin Lewis represent the other two-way spots on the team.

The Bulls still explored ways to keep Freeman-Liberty, according to Keith Glass, his longtime agent. But Toronto’s opportunity proved too enticing because the Bulls no longer had any two-way contracts available. Freeman-Liberty played well for the Windy City Bulls last season.”

In Toronto, Freeman-Liberty will be on a two-way contract, but with the current point guard rotation the Raptors have in place, he has a chance to emerge as a legitimate rotation player.

Report: Javon Freeman-Liberty to sign two-way contract with Raptors

Freeman-Liberty was named to the All-Summer League second team after averaging 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and one block.

Free agent guard Javon Freeman-Liberty will reportedly sign a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Freeman-Liberty, who went undrafted out of DePaul last year, spent the season with the Chicago Bulls on a two-way contract. He averaged 18.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals in 17 games with the Windy City Bulls in the G League.

He did not appear in a game with Chicago.

The 23-year-old was named to the all-summer league second team this month after averaging 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and one block in five games with the Bulls. He finished third in points (106) among all players in Las Vegas.

He will split his time next season between Toronto and the Raptors 905 in the G League. He is eligible to spend no more than 50 games in the NBA and will earn a flat salary equal to 50% of the minimum salary applicable to a player with zero years of service.

Bulls’ Javon Freeman-Liberty signs with Raptors after summer league

Chicago Bulls Summer League standout Javon Freeman-Liberty has signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8222″]

After a dominant showing for the Chicago Bulls at summer league, Javon Freeman-Liberty signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The 23-year-old point guard was the best player on Chicago’s summer league team by a wide margin, but he signed elsewhere.

This could end up being a big loss for Chicago. Freeman-Liberty showed  some serious talent on both ends of the court this summer. However, the Bulls’ guard room is filling up fast. With Coby White, Jevon Carter, Alex Caruso and the newly re-signed Ayo Dosunmu on board, Freeman-Liberty would have struggled to earn minutes.

Once the Bulls decided to sign Onrulap Bitim to their third and final two-way spot (Adama Sanogo and Justin Lewis reportedly earned the other two), Freeman-Liberty’s fate was seemingly set.

Now, he’ll have a chance to find a role on a Toronto Raptors squad that desperately needs point guard play. With Fred VanVleet leaving for the Houston Rockets, the only point guards they have on the roster are Dennis Schroder, who they just signed, and Malachi Flynn.

In five summer league appearances, Freeman-Liberty averaged 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 49.3% shooting from the floor and 46.2% from behind the 3-point line.

The Raptors are seemingly looking to win now, and Freeman-Liberty should help with that. He’s only going to be on a two-way deal, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him earn a standard contract by the end of the season.

Javon Freeman-Liberty receives perfect grade for Bulls’ summer league

Chicago Bulls Summer League standout Javon Freeman-Liberty received a perfect grade for his performance in Summer League.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

As the summer began, the Chicago Bulls were focused on improvement, but adding youth to their squad should have been viewed as a priority, too. Their current core isn’t a championship-caliber group. While there’s merit to simply competing for the playoffs, adding younger players to secure a brighter future is crucial.

In turn, summer league was an important event for the Bulls. It allowed them to look at some young talent. Dalen Terry had all the eyes on him when summer league started, but by the end, Javon Freeman-Liberty was the story. The 23-year-old guard was Chicago’s best player by a mile.

And according to Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic, Freeman-Liberty deserves a perfect grade for his showing.

“He was the Bulls’ best and most consistent all-around player. The 6-foot-4 guard who played 17 games with the Windy City Bulls last season also made the best case to break through and crack the regular roster.

“Freeman-Liberty averaged a team-leading 21.2 points on 49.3 percent shooting, including 46.2 percent on 3s, with 4.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

“Along the way, the Chicago native who starred at Whitney Young High School before going on to Valparasio and DePaul, showed some of everything a team would want in a floor general: reliable ball-handling, speed and quickness, change of pace, court vision, defense, 3-point shooting, free-throw shooting and finishing ability.

The Bulls might want to keep him around,” Mayberry wrote.

With Ayo Dosunmu’s uncertain future, Freeman-Liberty could have a legitimate pathway to a role on the Bulls. Should they give him a chance?

Bulls’ Javon Freeman-Liberty receives summer league honors

Chicago Bulls Summer League standout Javon Freeman-Liberty was named to the All-Summer League Second Team.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

This summer proved fruitful for the Chicago Bulls. Obviously, they re-signed Nikola Vucevic and Coby White, and they brought in veteran free agents Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig. However, summer league was also a great opportunity for them to evaluate young talent, and it worked out well.

Dalen Terry didn’t play as well as the team may have hoped, and Julian Phillips was OK, but point guard Javon Freeman-Liberty was phenomenal. The 23-year-old guard put up great stats throughout the summer and was by far the best player on Chicago’s team. For his elite play, the guard earned summer league honors.

As announced by the NBA’s PR Twitter account, Freeman-Liberty was named to the all-summer league second team.

In five summer league games, Freeman-Liberty averaged 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1 blocks per game while shooting 49.3% shooting from the floor and 46.2% shooting from behind the 3-point line.

Joining Freeman-Liberty on the second team were Emoni Bates of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Max Christie of the Los Angeles Lakers, Xavier Moon of the LA Clippers, Jabari Smith Jr. of the Houston Rockets and Jalen Wilson of the Brooklyn Nets.

The all-summer league first team consists of Keyonte George of the Utah Jazz, Sam Merrill of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Robinson of the Miami Heat, Hunter Tyson of the Denver Nuggets and Cam Whitmore of the Houston Rockets.

Freeman-Liberty is very clearly an NBA player, and the Bulls need to keep him around, because if they don’t, another team will.

Bulls’ summer league star Javon Freeman-Liberty deserves a shot

After an impressive Summer League stint, it’s clear that Chicago Bulls guard Javon Freeman-Liberty should be in the NBA.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

The Chicago Bulls entered summer league in hopes of getting a look at their young talent. Dalen Terry headlined a team of promising young prospects; he was the Bulls’ first-round pick in 2022. In addition, rookies Julian Phillips and Adama Sanogo were intriguing guys who Bulls fans were eager to watch hit the hardwood.

But as summer league progressed, it was clear one guy was the star of the show, and it wasn’t any of those players. It was Javon Freeman-Liberty. The 23-year-old guard dominated summer league and was not only Chicago’s best players but one of the best players in the entire event.

Elias Schuster of Bleacher Nation believes Freeman-Liberty deserves a chance in the NBA, whether with the Bulls or another squad.

“You already know who is the biggest winner of the Summer League, though. I have very little doubt that Javon Freeman-Liberty will be sitting on an NBA bench this season on at least a two-way deal,” Schuster wrote. “The question is whether or not that will be in Chicago. The Chicago Bulls have plenty of options at the guard position right now, so it might have to take the departure of Ayo Dosunmu for them to consider giving Freeman-Liberty a spot. But, yeah, it’s clear this dude deserves a shot somewhere in the league.”

If Ayo Dosunmu departs in free agency, Freeman-Liberty could be a suitable replacement. Regardless, Chicago should look to retain him. But if it doesn’t, another NBA team will undoubtedly look to bring Freeman-Liberty aboard.

Javon Freeman-Liberty is worthwhile gamble for Chicago Bulls

With how well he has played in Summer League, the Chicago Bulls should absolutely take a chance on Javon Freeman-Liberty.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

For the Chicago Bulls, the summer league is an important opportunity. Obviously, the Bulls are looking to compete for a playoff spot next year, but developing young talent should also be a priority as they look to improve internally and secure a better future for the organization.

Heading into the summer league, Dalen Terry, Julian Phillips and Adama Sanogo were among the most intriguing names, but one player quickly separated himself: Javon Freeman-Liberty. The point guard has emerged as the best player on Chicago’s summer league roster, and it isn’t particularly close. He’s proving worthy of an NBA opportunity.

According to Elias Schuster of Bleacher Nation, Freeman-Liberty is a worthwhile gamble for the Bulls heading into next season.

“The Bulls do currently have a couple of full-time roster spots left open,” Schuster wrote. “They also should have at least one two-way contract to offer. Especially if Ayo Dosunmu doesn’t end up wearing a Bulls jersey next year, it feels like Freeman-Liberty might be a worthwhile gamble. Heck, even if Dosunmu returns, extending him at least a two-way slot might be wise. I know there would be a rather significant logjam at the guard position, but developing young talent needs to remain a priority for this organization. If the Bulls don’t keep him around for further evaluation, I have a very good feeling someone else will.”

As Schuster noted, the Bulls already have solid guard depth, but with how well Freeman-Liberty has played, Chicago should give him a roster spot (or a two-way contract) or another team will.

Bulls standout Javon Freeman-Liberty wants to ‘prove I belong’ in NBA

Chicago Bulls Summer League standout Javon Freeman-Liberty is looking to prove himself.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Every year, summer league provides the Chicago Bulls and every other team around the league a chance to take a close look at their NBA talent and evaluate who should get a chance on the main squad. Chicago has gone 1-1 in its two games this year, but some players have stood out.

Dalen Terry was the headliner of the team heading into the summer. While he hasn’t been very efficient, his energy has been phenomenal. Julian Phillips looked a bit slow in his debut, and fellow rookie Adama Sanogo had one middling performance and one solid game. Javon Freeman-Liberty has been the star of the show, however.

Freeman-Liberty has been far and away the best player on Chicago’s summer league roster, and he believes he’s ready for a shot at the NBA. (H/t Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic)

“All my life I’ve been fighting to get here,” Freeman-Liberty said. “And I feel like I’m still not (anywhere). So I still got that chip on my shoulder, and I’m still motivated each and every day Just go out there and prove I belong somewhere. Not just anywhere. But I belong somewhere out there on that floor to help a team out one day.”

With Ayo Dosunmu’s place on the Bulls still in question, Freeman-Liberty could provide them with a solid alternative. Even if Dosunmu returns, the Bulls should still pursue a future with Freeman-Liberty.

He’s a solid scorer, an energetic presence on both ends of the court and he proved a consistent player in the G League last year. This summer league stint might be the push Chicago needs to bring him on board full-time.
