After a dominant showing for the Chicago Bulls at summer league, Javon Freeman-Liberty signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The 23-year-old point guard was the best player on Chicago’s summer league team by a wide margin, but he signed elsewhere.
This could end up being a big loss for Chicago. Freeman-Liberty showed some serious talent on both ends of the court this summer. However, the Bulls’ guard room is filling up fast. With Coby White, Jevon Carter, Alex Caruso and the newly re-signed Ayo Dosunmu on board, Freeman-Liberty would have struggled to earn minutes.
Once the Bulls decided to sign Onrulap Bitim to their third and final two-way spot (Adama Sanogo and Justin Lewis reportedly earned the other two), Freeman-Liberty’s fate was seemingly set.
Now, he’ll have a chance to find a role on a Toronto Raptors squad that desperately needs point guard play. With Fred VanVleet leaving for the Houston Rockets, the only point guards they have on the roster are Dennis Schroder, who they just signed, and Malachi Flynn.
In five summer league appearances, Freeman-Liberty averaged 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 49.3% shooting from the floor and 46.2% from behind the 3-point line.
The Raptors are seemingly looking to win now, and Freeman-Liberty should help with that. He’s only going to be on a two-way deal, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him earn a standard contract by the end of the season.
