Lakers release two players, sign two new players

The Lakers have made a few minor roster moves.

Through three preseason games, the Los Angeles Lakers are 0-3, but there are things to be hopeful for.

When their regular rotation players have been in the game, mostly in the first half and for much of the third quarter, they have looked fairly good on both ends of the floor.

But head coach Darvin Ham has given almost all the rest of the available playing time to men who will either not make the final roster or get very little run during the regular season.

It’s part of his job. Every team needs to determine who will end up getting its final roster spots.

To that end, the Lakers released Dwayne Bacon and Javante McCoy, and signed L.J. Figueroa and Shaquille Harrison.

Figueroa is a 6-foot-6, 200-pound guard who spent last season in the G League. He seems to have the potential to be a good rebounder for a guard.

Harrison, meanwhile, has played with six teams across five NBA seasons. His best year came in the 2019-20 campaign when he averaged 4.9 points in 11.3 minutes per game while shooting 38.1% from 3-point range.

Lakers sign Javante McCoy, Fabian White Jr. to Exhibit 10 contracts

The Lakers have signed two players from their summer league roster to Exhibit 10 contracts, allowing them to make their big league roster.

This offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers had a number of interesting prospects play for them in the NBA Summer League.

One of them was Javante McCoy, a 6-foot-5 wing who played five years of college ball at Boston University.

Both he and Fabian White Jr., a 6-foot-8 forward, have been signed by the Lakers to Exhibit 10 contracts, which means they will get a shot at making the team during training camp.

McCoy showed flashes of being a contributor during summer league play, averaging 10.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 20.4 minutes per game through five contests. In a couple of games, he put together solid performances.

White, meanwhile, put up 2.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.1 minutes through three games at the Las Vegas Summer League. He played five seasons at the University of Houston.

Javante McCoy will play for Lakers in NBA Summer League

The Lakers added another player to their summer league roster by signing undrafted guard Javante McCoy from Boston University.

For a team that did not have a first-round pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, the Los Angeles Lakers got a lot done.

They acquired the 35th selection from the Orlando Magic and used it on Michigan State University guard Max Christie. They signed several undrafted rookie free agents: Cole Swider, Shareef O’Neal and Scotty Pippen Jr.

And they would made sure they would have a full house for next month’s NBA Summer League.

Javante McCoy, a former guard for Boston University, will participate in the Lakers’ summer league entry and get a chance to show what he has to offer.

McCoy stayed at Boston University for five years, topping out at 17.4 points per game while shooting 49.5% overall from the field and hitting 42.5% from 3-point land in his final season.

He stands 6 feet, 5 inches and weighs 180 pounds, and he possesses pretty good athleticism. However, as a Boston University Terrier, he played in what is known as the Patriot League, which doesn’t exactly offer the highest level of competition in college basketball.
