2022 NFL draft: Experts hand out grades for Bears

Here’s a collection of all of the grades for the Bears’ 2022 draft class, where experts wondered why they didn’t do more for Justin Fields.

The 2021 NFL draft is officially in the books, and the Chicago Bears came out of it with some promising prospects.

General manager Ryan Poles targeted the secondary with his first two selections in Round 2 in Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon and Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker. Chicago also took a chance on speedy Tennessee wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. in the third round.

But it was on Day 3 when Poles turned three selections into eight picks through several trades, where he added some great value picks that could turn into steals down the line.

Here’s a collection of all of the grades for the Bears’ draft class from various sports outlets, where most experts were left wondering why Chicago didn’t do more to help Justin Fields.

Grading the Bears’ selection of OL Ja’Tyre Carter

The Bears added to their offensive line by drafting Southern’s Ja’Tyre Carter in the seventh round. Here’s how we graded the pick.

With the 226th pick in the NFL draft, the Chicago Bears selected offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter out of Southern University. Carter becomes the first player from Southern to be drafted in the NFL since 2004.

Carter is an interesting draft choice with little risk. The Bears were stocking up on offensive linemen, to hopefully find one or two diamonds in this year’s draft. Even if they found one long-term starter, they’ve added some depth for the foreseeable future.

At 6-foot-5, 275-pounds, Carter has good size for the tackle position. The low risk benefits the Bears, as they’ve found a potential well-rounded offensive lineman, who can fill in when needed.

The strategy Ryan Poles has had during this draft has impressed fans. Though most were expecting multiple wide receivers, Poles understands the importance of protecting quarterback Justin Fields. Chicago can have all the weapons they want. But if Fields doesn’t have time to throw the ball, it doesn’t matter.

Grade: B+

The Chicago Bears continue to load up on the offensive line, as general manager Ryan Poles has now taken four offensive linemen on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft.

The latest is Southern’s Ja’Tyre Carter with the 226th overall selection, who adds depth to what was an area of weakness last season.

Carter was a four-year starter at Southern University with 37 starts at left tackle. He’s 6’3, 311 pounds, with a perfect frame to move inside to guard. He’s a former high school basketball player converted to offensive line at Southern.

He’s strong at the point of attack and has plenty of aggressiveness, but he’s a developmental pick. He might not become a starter, but he provides additional depth at guard behind Cody Whitehair and Dakota Dozier.

The Chicago Bears selected Southern offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter with the 226th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

The Bears continue to load up on the offensive line, as general manager Ryan Poles has now taken four offensive linemen on Day 3 of the draft.

Carter was a four-year starter at left tackle during his collegiate career, but he projects as a developmental guard at the NFL level. Last season, Carter allowed just three pressures in pass protection.

Here’s what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had to say about Carter:

Offensive line prospect with the frame, strength and grit to make a go of it moving from tackle to guard. Carter displays some technical savvy in certain areas, but needs much more work to get to where he needs to go. He lacks explosiveness and tends to lean on his ability to maul as a run blocker. If he can get his hands and pad level locked in, he’ll have a shot to become an NFL backup.

It took the Bears over three hours to make their first selection on Day 3 of the draft after Poles made several trades to turn three Day 3 picks into eight selections.

Chicago still has two picks left on Saturday, both seventh rounders at 254th and 255th.

Chargers set to meet with Southern OL Ja’Tyre Carter

The Chargers are interested in an offensive lineman who projects as a multi-positional backup.

The Chargers still have starting spots at right tackle and right guard to fill, but getting quality depth pieces behind them is still imperative.

Los Angeles could be looking at former Southern offensive tackle Ja’Tyre Carter to be one of those guys, as he’s expected to meet with the team virtually, according to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo.

Carter made 37 starts for Jaguars, with all of them coming at left tackle. 2021 marked his most impressive season, as he allowed zero sacks across 11 games. He went on to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

At 6-foot-3 and 311 pounds, Carter recently had an eye-popping Pro Day, having posted a 34.5-inch vertical, a 9-foot-3 broad jump, and a 5.02-second 40-yard dash.

Carter, a former basketball player, possesses the footwork, hands and power to hold his own in pass protection and in the run game. However, he is a candidate to be moved inside due to his shorter frame.

Nonetheless, Carter would supply a multi-positional backup for the Bolts.

He currently projects as a Round 5 or 6 selection.
