Michigan State basketball: Malik Hall, Tyson Walker, Jason Whitens to all walk on senior day

Malik Hall, Tyson Walker, Jason Whitens will all walk on senior day

Michigan State basketball will have its senior day ceremony on Saturday during the home game against Ohio State. Three Spartans are set to walk in that ceremony, although all three are undecided on their futures.

Kyle Austin of MLive.com reported that Malik Hall, Tyson Walker and Jason Whitens will all walk on senior day, although all three could still return for one more season. Joey Hauser would normally walk in this ceremony, but he walked last year and will abstain.

Watch the story of Jason Whitens journey to MSU:

Jason Whitens has been thrusted into a role with Michigan State basketball this season due to several injuries within the team. Whitens is someone who was ready for the task, and has stepped up to the challenge.

Whitens has had a remarkable journey to Michigan State, first being a native of the upper peninsula, and then spending four years at Western Michigan before transferring to MSU.

Michigan State basketball: One off the radar player fans need to be aware of amid injuries

There’s one off the radar player on MSU’s roster you should expect to step up amid the injuries to Malik Hall and Jaden Akins

It has been reported that Malik Hall and Jaden Akins are both expected to miss time during the Phil Knight Invitational tournament the Spartans are set to play in over the holiday weekend.

Now, the Spartans find themselves down to 8 scholarship players, and a serious depth problem on their roster.

Who should fans expect to step up with the increase of minutes available?

Well, the obvious answer is Pierre Brooks and Tre Holloman, two players who already are featured in the rotation and get quality minutes. But there is one player on Tom Izzo’s bench I expect to see more of this week.

Jason Whitens.

Whitens is a walk-on transfer from Western Michigan. He transferred into MSU for the 2021-22 season, before a torn ACL ended his season in the first exhibition game.

Now, Whitens is back for another year and he may get thrusted into action amid injuries. At Western Michigan, he played in 67 games, while starting 47 of those games, so he is a guy with experience at the division one level. In his WMU career, Whitens averaged 4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in an average of 19.7 minutes per game.

Michigan State has a plethora of minutes available, and will need several guys to step up to fill the void and I am expecting Jason Whitens will be a part of that group.

Michigan State’s coaching staff has made a sly move to the roster with seemingly very few people noticing. Summer workouts are in full force, as the team prepares for the 2021-22 season, and there is a new face in the group.

The Spartans have added Jason Whitens, a transfer from Western Michigan University, to the roster as a preferred walk-on.

Whitens is a native of the upper peninsula, being from  Powers, Michigan. A 6’4″ guard, Whitens will provide more depth to the wings for MSU.

Whitens has spent the last three seasons as a member of the Bronco program, playing in 67 games, as well as starting in 47 of them, averaging 4.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in his career.
