The good, the bad, and the ugly from Seahawks’ Wild Card loss to Rams

The Seattle Seahawks disappointed with a 20-30 loss at Lumen Field – their first playoff defeat at home since 2004 – to the Rams on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2020 season came to a screeching halt on Super Wild Card Weekend with a 30-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Lumen Field, thanks to a putrid outing from Russell Wilson and the offense. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer seemed to have no answer for the hard-hitting, speedy Rams defense, while Seattle’s defense looked progressively more exhausted and demoralized as the game clock ticked onward.

One last time, let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Seahawks’ first home playoff loss since 2004.

THE GOOD

Carlos Dunlap: Seattle’s trade for Carlos Dunlap continued to pay great dividends in the pass rush, creating pressure on the quarterback from the very first snap and posting two pass breakups and three tackles. Dunlap has revolutionized the Seahawks’ pass rush since his arrival and is currently under contract through 2021 – after his performance this year, the team should place a high priority on locking him down for another few seasons.

Jason Myers: The Seahawks’ record-setting kicker grew his streak to 37 straight made field goals, booting a 50-yarder for the team’s first score of the game in the second quarter and a 52-yarder at the beginning of the third quarter. He also nearly forced a fumble on the kickoff following his second field goal, chasing down Rams returner Nsimba Webster and slamming him to the ground at the Los Angeles 41 to jar the ball loose. Although Webster was subsequently ruled down, Seahawks fans were undoubtedly cheered by the effort and toughness that Myers demonstrated in a key situation.

With the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers winning their respective games, the Seahawks finished as the No. 3 seed in the NFC and will face the Los Angeles Rams for their first postseason matchup. In the meantime, here are five takeaways from this game.

The good, the bad, and the ugly from Seahawks’ win over Rams

The Seattle Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams 20-9 on Sunday to claim the NFC West crown and avenge their Week 10 beatdown.

The Seattle Seahawks avenged their Week 10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams with a division-clinching 20-9 rematch victory at Lumen Field on Sunday, adding yet another eventful chapter to the two teams’ oft-tumultuous rivalry. Both defenses put on a show, preventing any touchdowns until the second half, while penalty flags flew left and right in a good old-fashioned messy matchup. Let’s look at some of the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Seahawks’ latest “hat and t-shirt” game.

THE GOOD

Jason Myers: Myers continued his perfect season by hitting two field goals from 45 and 49 yards out, respectively, while also making both of his extra-point attempts. His franchise-record 33 straight field goals have made him one of the Seahawks’ most reliable players, particularly in such a season of ups and downs. At 29 years old, Myers has several good years of kicking left in him; although his contract does not expire until after the 2022 season, Seattle would be remiss not to consider an extension within the next year.

The defense: Seattle’s defense from Week 10-15 was among the best in the NFL, allowing just 16 points per game. In Week 16, they positively dominated the Jared Goff-led Rams offense, holding them to just three field goals despite Los Angeles finding tremendous success in third-down efficiency early on. The linebacker duo of K.J. Wright and Jordyn Brooks were positively electric, combining for 15 total tackles, a tackle for loss, and two pass breakups. Jamal Adams, playing despite multiple broken fingers, posted six tackles and a near-interception, while rising superstar D.J. Reed made his presence known with eight tackles. This red-hot Seahawks defense, who coach Pete Carroll showered with praise after the game, should be well-primed to wreak havoc on the struggling 49ers offense next Sunday.

Seahawks punter Michael Dickson named Special Teams Player of Week 15

For his impressive efforts against Washington, Seattle Seahawks punter Michael Dickson has been named the Special Teams Player of Week 15.

The Seattle Seahawks advanced to 10-4 on the year on Sunday after beating the Washington Football Team on the road and special teams was a big factor in the win.

Kicker Jason Myers set a franchise record for most consecutive field goals made at 31 and punter Michael Dickson had an impressive outing himself.  Dickson punted four times on Sunday, averaging 50.8 yards per kick. All four punts landed well inside the 20-yard line.

For his efforts, Dickson was named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of Week 15.

“Michael Dickson had a huge game today,” coach Pete Carroll said after the victory. “We were playing field position all day long, and he did a great job of keeping them deep and making their offense go the long haul.”

The is the second time this season Dickson has earned the honor and the third over his career. He was also named Player of the Month in his rookie year.

4 studs and 2 duds in Seahawks 20-15 win at Washington

Here are the four studs and the two duds from the Seattle Seahawks 20-15 win over Washington Football Team in Week 15.

A week after a dominating victory over the Jets, the Seattle Seahawks returned to their old ways of grinding out wins in the most difficult way possible while giving every 12th Man cardiac arrest. The Seahawks improved to 10-4 and clinched a playoff berth by defeating the Washington Football Team 20-15.

The Seahawks built a commanding 20-3 lead entering the fourth quarter and had been dominating. Washington looked lost against the improved Seahawks defense, while Russell Wilson and the ground game just chewed up the clock to control the game.

However, the Football Team engineered back-to-back touchdown drives as Seattle’s offense completely stalled, giving the entire Pacific Northwest a scare the Seahawks might actually blow a 17-point lead for only the second time in franchise history.

In the end, the Seahawks escaped with an ugly win, but a win nonetheless.

Jason Myers sets Seahawks record for most consecutive field goals made

Seattle kicker Jason Myers set the Seahawks’ franchise record for the most consecutive field goals made at 31 in Week 15 at Washington.

The Seattle Seahawks are in Washington Week 15 for their last 10:00 a.m. PT start of the regular season and were the first to put points on the board on Sunday.

As of this post, kicker Jason Myers has completed both of his field-goal attempts, first to tie, and then to set the Seahawks’ franchise record for most consecutive field goals made at 31.

With his first attempt, the successful 43-yard try in the first quarter, Myers tied the old record set by former Seattle kicker Olindo Mare. His second kick went for 40 yards and set the new record.

Courtesy of Myers, the Seahawks lead the Washington Football Team 6-0 with two minutes to go in the first half.

3 duds and only 2 studs in Seahawks 23-16 loss to Rams

Week 10 featured another ugly loss for the Seahawks – here are 3 duds and only 2 studs in Seattle’s 23-16 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

One week after surrendering the most points in the Pete Carroll era, the Seattle Seahawks put forth one of their most unwatchable games in recent memory as they fell to the Rams 23-16.

The Seahawks hardly looked competitive as they suffered their second loss in a row, their third in four weeks, and dropped from their position atop the NFC West all the way down to third place. The Rams have always had Seattle’s number, and Sunday afternoon’s showdown was another example of Los Angeles bullying its division rivals in the Pacific Northwest.

If it weren’t for Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein missing a game-winning attempt last year in Seattle, the Seahawks would be looking at a six-game losing streak to Los Angeles dating back to 2017.

Seattle looked uncompetitive for the majority of the game. As a result, there are more duds than studs this week.

Kicker Jason Myers sets Seahawks record with 61-yard field goal

Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers set a franchise record Week 10 with his 61-yard field goal to close out the first half against the Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks are within four points of the Los Angeles Rams Week 10 at the half thanks to kicker Jason Myers.

After the Seahawks’ drive stalled, Myers lined up for a 61-yard field goal attempt to close out the second quarter. The ball sailed through the uprights, setting a franchise record.

In addition, Myers has now completed 20-straight field goal attempts, the third-longest in team history.

The Rams lead was narrowed but Los Angeles is still ahead of Seattle 17-13 at the break.

The Seahawks are set to get the ball back at the start of the third quarter.

Here’s a look at Myers’ record-setting attempt.

After solid 2019, Seahawks kicker Jason Myers still has room to grow

Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers had a relatively solid season for the team in 2019, but there is still room for improvement in 2020.

Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers had a rough start to the 2019 season. However, he rebounded in a big way and became reliable in the second half of the year, helping the team make it to the divisional round of the postseason where they lost to the Green Bay Packers.

Myers made 23 of his 28 field goals in the 2019 regular season, good for 82.1 percent. He also made 40 of his 44 extra points (90.9 percent) on the year. After a particularly shaky performance in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which he made but also missed two field goals – including the game-winner that forced overtime – Seahawks fans were calling for Myers to be released.

He answered the outcry by making all 12 of his field-goal attempts through the next six games, which is how he finished the regular season. However, Myers has to clean up his misses to fulfill the four-year, $15.5 million contract the Seahawks signed him to in the 2019 offseason. He made only two of his four field goals in the postseason, which will not cut it in the playoffs.

Myers had a good year in 2019, but he must be more consistent with his kicks in the future to live up to his lucrative contract.
