Seahawks name six players as team captains

It is an increase from last year, when the Seahawks only had four.

The Seattle Seahawks are inching closer and closer to their Week 1 showdown against the Los Angeles Rams. But you can’t take the field without your team captains, and the Seahawks have found theirs.

Today Head coach Pete Carroll announced which players are the captains and for 2023 they have increased their ranks from last year. With so much veteran presence in Seattle, Carroll is going with two captains per unit.

Geno Smith is obvious, as the quarterback usually fills this role. Tyler Lockett being named a captain is also fitting, as Lockett truly emerged as a leader in the wake of Russell Wilson leaving. Quandre Diggs was a defensive captain last year, sharing responsibilities with Al Woods. With Woods gone, the role naturally falls back to linebacker Bobby Wagner.

As for special teams, why not balance it out with two per unit? Fullback/linebacker Nick Bellore returns to his role, and will be joined by kicker Jason Myers, who has emerged as one of the best in the NFL at his position.

Seahawks 2023 free agency tracker: Latest extensions, exits, cuts and new signings

Here are all of the latest moves that Seattle has made related to free agency this year.

The NFL’s 2023 free agency period has begun. Teams have between now and Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. eastern time when the new league year begins to negotiate with players who are about to become free agents. The Seahawks have already made some moves of course, including re-signing their starting quarterback and their kicker.

Here are all of the latest moves that Seattle has made related to free agency this year.

NFL players vote 5 Seahawks among the top 5 at their respective positions

Their peers have voted for five Seahawks players to be ranked among the top five at their respective positions.

The Seattle Seahawks still have work to do before they’re ready to compete with the real playoff heavyweights. However, they do have some rare talents at several different positions.

Case in point, their peers have voted for five Seahawks players to be ranked among the top five at their respective positions. Here’s who the NFLPA picked and where they ranked.

PFF: Seahawks should target Commanders DT Daron Payne in free agency

According to Pro Football Focus, Seattle should re-sign QB Geno Smith and then look to target Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne when the market opens.

The Seahawks have begun filling out their roster for the 2023 season. So far, the team has signed 10 players to reserve/future contracts and extended kicker Jason Myers for another four years.

While the 2023 NFL draft is the main attraction and their best chance at putting together a real contender, first up there’s free agency – where they can find themselves proven commodities rather than rolling the dice on amateur prospects.

According to Pro Football Focus, Seattle should re-sign QB Geno Smith and then look to target Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne when the market opens. They see him as a fit for their scheme and run defense needs.

“Seattle showed various different alignments with their defensive front in 2022, not as beholden to head coach Pete Carroll’s typical 4-3 base as in years past, but Payne has also played in a 3-4 and 4-3 and can line up as a zero-technique all the way out to a three-technique depending on the front. Payne earned back-to-back 70.0-plus pass-rush grades over the last two seasons while his early career run defense prowess suffered, but he’s shown he can win in many different ways depending on what he’s asked to do, with 96 quarterback pressures and 16 sacks over the last two seasons.”

Signing Payne wouldn’t be as exciting as drafting a stud like Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter at No. 5 overall. However, it would free them up to use that pick on another position of need. Their edge rotation could also use an upgrade, for one. Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr. is ranked No. 1 among edge defenders in this class and he may still be on the board at that point.

Seahawks give kicker Jason Myers 4-year contract extension

The Seattle Seahawks have announced a contract extension for their placekicker, Jason Myers.

The Seattle Seahawks have announced a contract extension for their placekicker, Jason Myers. According to Mike Dugar at the Athletic, the contract is worth $21.1 million over the next four years. Only Justin Tucker of the Ravens makes more annually at the position.

Myers came into the league in 2015 with the Jaguars after going undrafted out of Marist. He spent three years in Jacksonville, followed by one with the Jets before signing with Seattle.

Since joining the Seahawks in 2019, Myers has established himself as one of the league’s most consistent and accurate kickers – subtracting a flukish 2021 season. Over the last four years total he has made 98 of his 112 field goal attempts (87.5%) and 174 of his 186 extra point attempts (93.5%). For his career he has made just under 86% of his field goal attempts.

Myers was due to become an unrestricted free agent in March, so this deal keeps him under contract through the 2026 season.

Jason Myers’ 56-yard field goal gives Seahawks halftime lead

Jason Myers from long range and the Seahawks lead at the half

A silly play by San Francisco 49ers DB Jimmie Ward toward the end of the second quarter on Saturday proved costly in the NFC Wild-Card game.

Ward was flagged for unnecessary roughness for a hit on Seattle QB Geno Smith.

That didn’t make it a freebie for Jason Myers but the Seattle kicker found the range from 56 yards to give his team a 17-16 lead at the break.

Seattle scored all 17 of its points in the second quarter,

Speaking of kickers, the 49ers’ Robbie Gould had three field goals in the first 30 minutes.

In his playoff career, the veteran kicker — he’s 40 years old — has hit all of his 24 field-goal attempts.

Seahawks take lead going into halftime on Jason Myers’ 56-yard field goal

Thank you Jimmie Ward.

Thank you Jimmie Ward.

Thanks to this foolish hit on a sliding Geno Smith with one second left in the first half, the Seahawks were set up to score going into the break.

On the next play, Seattle kicker Myers connected on a 56-yard field goal, giving Seattle a one-point lead going into halftime.

Instead of the blowout everybody expected, this one feels like it’s going to be a classic. The Seahawks lead 17-16 at halftime.

Seahawks K Jason Myers makes first ever player-voted All-Pro team

Here’s the full team.

Seahawks kicker Jason Myers has had a strong 2022 season, bouncing back from an off-year in 2021 when he only made 73.9% of his field goal attempts. This season he’s gone 34/37 – 91.9%. That gives him a great track record in two of the last three years – having led the NFL at 100% in 2020.

Myers isn’t flying under the radar, either. In fact, he’s getting some great recognition from his peers. We were expecting to see Justin Tucker get the nod, but Myers is the kicker and only Seattle player who made the All-Pro team as voted on by the players themselves. Here’s the full team.

3 Studs and 2 Duds in Seahawks’ 19-16 OT win over Rams

A look at the Studs and Duds from the Seattle Seahawks crazy overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams to keep their playoff hopes alive.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”FyLhBtGm8b-2470711-7498″]

They never make it easy, do they? The Seattle Seahawks once again left the Pacific Northwest holding its breath but ultimately prevailed in a 19-16 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams. It is the first time the Seahawks have ever swept coach Sean McVay, and the first time Seattle swept the season series versus the Rams since the 2013 Super Bowl XLVIII season.

The Seahawks finish the regular season 9-8, improving upon their 7-10 record last year and a far cry from the 3-to-4-win team many predicted at the beginning of the season.

Seattle still has a chance at the playoffs, and I will discuss that at the end of the article. But for now, let us take a look at this game’s 3 Studs and 2 Duds.
