Why 49ers players not knowing playoff OT rules does and doesn’t matter

49ers players didn’t know the new playoff OT rules. Here’s why that does and doesn’t matter:

Super Bowl LVIII was a rarity, becoming only the second Super Bowl to ever go to overtime. It was also the first playoff game to go to OT since the NFL altered the rules for the extra time. Both teams under the new rules get a possession regardless of how the first possession goes. The stadium scoreboard explained the new rules for the fans, but it turns out the 49ers players needed the explainer too.

While the lack of knowledge of the OT rules is certainly a preparatory oversight, it didn’t ultimately affect the outcome of Sunday’s game.

Defensive lineman Arik Armstead after the game told reporters he was unaware of the new rules.

“I didn’t even know about the new playoff overtime rule, so it was a surprise to me,” Armstead said via ESPN. “I didn’t even really know what was going on in terms of that.”

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk was also unaware.

“You know what? I didn’t even realize the playoff rules were different in overtime,” Juszczyk said. “I assume you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win.”

There’s an obvious, glaring problem with this.

The NFL changed its rules for the most important games of the year and the 49ers as an organization didn’t take the time to go over it with its players. They didn’t discuss the strategy or ensure the players knew what was at stake with each OT possession.

That is not good and displays a lack of attention to detail that may serve as at least a partial explanation for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s continued shortcomings in the postseason, particularly when juxtaposed against what Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said about his team’s preparation for the rules.

“We’ve talked about it all year,” Reid said. “We talked about it in training camp about how the rules were different in regular season versus the playoffs. Every week of the playoffs we talked about the overtime rule.”

However, lack of awareness of the rule isn’t the reason the 49ers came up short in Sunday’s OT loss. They got the ball first and tried going down to score a touchdown. They came up short and settled for a field goal. Then they needed a stop and didn’t get one. It’s pretty cut and dry.

It would be a different story had Shanahan not known the rules. Had he taken the ball first because he thought he could win the game with a TD, there would be a major problem for San Francisco.

After the game Shanahan explained though that the club deemed it prudent to receive in OT in the event there was a third possession. That would set the 49ers up to win with a field goal.

The strategy for that can be debated, but there’s ultimately no good answer. In overtime, no matter what the rules were, the team needed a score and a stop. Even under the most recent old OT rules their field goal on the first possession wouldn’t have been enough to win it and they’d still have needed to keep the Chiefs out of the end zone.

Moving forward the 49ers should probably dedicate at least a little bit of offseason time to ensuring players know the rule changes. The players not knowing the playoff OT rules isn’t great from a big picture standpoint, but it’s hardly the reason they fell short in OT against Kansas City in the Super Bowl.

Joe Biden trolls conspiracy theorists after Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win

President Joe Biden took to Twitter to troll conspiracy theorists after the #Chiefs’ win over the #49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl champions after defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 on Sunday night in a thrilling overtime contest that had America on the edge of its seat all night.

While Kansas City was celebrating their victory, users on social media were quick to attempt to poke holes in the Chiefs’ win. Some intimated that the game was fixed, others said that officiating was one-sided.

President Joe Biden, the leader of the free world, stoked the fires of conspiracy with a hilarious post on Twitter after overtime ended.

This meme is sure to have fans around the country talking on Monday morning and serves as a good indication that Biden was watching the game well into the night.

Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman didn’t know game was over after overtime touchdown in Super Bowl

#Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman didn’t know the game was over after his overtime touchdown against the #49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Thrillingly, the Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in five seasons on Sunday. The game-winning drive late in the first overtime period was capped off with a spectacular Patrick Mahomes touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.

The exciting finish to the game was confusing for the pass recipient, as Hardman wasn’t sure if the game was over. During Hardman’s postgame interview with NFL Network, Mahomes interrupted with a hilarious revelation about the moment.

“Can I tell a quick funny story?” said Mahomes, “I threw a touchdown to this dude (Hardman) to end the game. He looked at me and had no idea, and I said dude, we just won the Super Bowl. He had no idea, and I’m like, he didn’t even celebrate in the beginning. What are we doing?”

Unlike regular season games, postseason games cannot end in a tie, so the overtime rules change slightly. According to the NFL, If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period or the second team’s initial possession has not ended, the teams will play another overtime period. Play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed for a winner to be determined.

Hardman was confused by the new postseason overtime rules that guaranteed both teams a possession in the game. “When I saw you run towards me, I was like, yeah, it’s time to celebrate now,” said Hardman, holding back laughter in the interview. The Chiefs took advantage of the 49ers being held to a field goal on their first possession, enabling the game-winning touchdown moment.

If it is a close game, that means we could get overtime. What that used to mean in the playoffs is that the team who scored first wins the game in the sudden death period.

Guess what? Not. Anymore.

Thanks to 2022’s ridiculous Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs gamethe NFL changed the rules so that both teams will have a chance to touch the ball, should they get to overtime.

I know that might sound a bit confusing. If it is, don’t worry. Here’s a quick explainer on how it works.

Kiyan Anthony’s show drops: ‘I want to show the world I’m not just an NBA player’s son’

Kiyan Anthony and Overtime partnered for a video series about the four-star Long Island Lutheran shooting guard’s high school path.

Kiyan Anthony and Overtime have released the first episode of The Evolu7ion, the new YouTube show featuring the high school basketball player and son of NBA legend Carmelo Anthony.

About 12 minutes long, the first episode of the show features highlights of in-game and AAU, practice footage and some video on the hardtop.

While Anthony’s said he wants to “‘show the world I’m not just an NBA player’s son,” much of the episode was centered around the relationship with Melo.

Anthony talked about the Black Ops team in his childhood with a bunch of friends that Carmelo helped form. As the Long Island Lutheran (Glen Head, N.Y). shooting guard aged, the father realized that he’s playing the game because he enjoys it, not just because his dad does.

“Once he told me he wanted it — then this is the result you get,” Melo said.

“Me and me dad behind the scenes is another father-son relationship,” Anthony said. “Since he’s in the NBA, and my mom (La La Anthony) being actress, it opens more doors for all of us.”

Much of the footage in the Overtime was practice with his friends under the tutelage of Carmelo, who said that he focuses a lot on conditioning with the teenagers. The father laughed as he commented to the cameraman that “they thought they was gonna come in here and do dribbling drills and s***.”

Anthony also spent a large portion of the video recapping the Team Melo AAU game against the Florida Rebels.

Anthony touched upon his Syracuse offer, saying there’s a chance he could go to the same school his father attended in 2002-03. It’s not a sure bet, though — rated as a four-star athlete on 247Sports, Anthony has 17 offers, including from Maryland, Michigan and Tennessee. With two more years of high school before graduating in 2025, Anthony is ranked as the No. 10 shooting guard on the site’s composite ranking and the No. 1 player in New York.

“I’m trying to get to the NBA and I’m trying to produce in the NBA,” Anthony said. “I want to prove I’m one of the best players in the country.”

La La said: “It’s incredible to have a father and a teacher like Melo to show you so many things, but it’s also important to make your own path. And I think that’s what he’s doing”

Notre Dame All-Time Overtime Results

Which is the best and which hurts the worst?

Notre Dame has been playing football a long time but Sunday’s win over Florida State was the first game in the history of the program that the Fighting Irish recorded an overtime win away from Notre Dame Stadium.

It’s worth noting that overtime only came to be in college football in 1996 but a quarter century without a road overtime win is impressively sad when you consider how many opportunities Notre Dame has had in that situation.

Here are Notre Dame’s all-time overtime results.

Warning:  some of what you are about to see is going to bring back awful memories if you’re a passionate Notre Dame football fan…

Crimson Tide erase 17 point deficit to beat Auburn on senior night

Crimson Tide clinch the SEC with 90-85 victory over in-state rivals

The Alabama Crimson Tide are the 2022-2023 SEC regular season champions for the second time in three years under head coach Nate Oats as they defeated the Auburn Tigers 90-85 on Wednesday night.

The Tide trailed for the majority of the game and by as much as 17 at one point, but they were able to climb back to force overtime and escape with a win. Jahvon Quinerly was the star of the night as he scored 24 crucial points off the bench to give Alabama a huge boost on senior night. Winning the game and clinching the conference is obviously massive, but climbing back from such a deficit against your bitter rivals speaks volumes of this Crimson Tide. No better time to be hot than March.

Despite already locking up the conference, Alabama has one more remaining game against Texas A&M on Saturday before the SEC Tournament starts next week. The win today locked up the No. 1 seed in the tournament and they will benefit from a few bye rounds.
