Saints are likelier to extend Demario Davis’ contract than trade him

The Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora reports that the Saints are seeking to trade linebacker Demario Davis, but he’s likelier to sign an extension with New Orleans:

Could the New Orleans Saints trade Demario Davis? That’s what Jason La Canfora is reporting for the Washington Post, chalking it up to the team’s complicated salary cap situation.

“The Saints are pushing to find a trade partner for cornerback Marshon Lattimore and linebacker Demario Davis, two linchpins of their defense, according to people in the industry,” La Canfora wrote.

Davis currently has a salary cap hit north of $18.1 million, third-highest on the team, and trading him would only save about $4.9 million.  He’s the NFL’s oldest starting linebacker at 35 but he’s won four consecutive spots on the Associated Press’ All-Pro team, with back-to-back appearances at the Pro Bowl Games. He hasn’t slowed down yet.

If they’re so worried about the cap (and they aren’t; New Orleans’ reported moves have them in the red by just $10.9 million) the Saints would save almost twice as month money with a standard restructure: $8.09 million. And they’d still have Davis on the roster. He is entering the final year of his deal so there’s a risk of him leaving a lot of dead money behind next year by taking that route.

Which brings us to the possibility of an extension. Cutting a new deal with Davis would save even more money (around $8.6 million) by redoing his contract and spreading his already-guaranteed money out while insuring he’ll get to retire in black and gold. That’s the approach they took with Tyrann Mathieu (and Cameron Jordan last summer), and it makes sense to use the same mechanisms with Davis. He’s an important leader and playmaker on their defense.

You should never say never in the NFL, but the money alone makes trading Davis a bad idea for the Saints. Combine that with his contract status, his still-impressive level of play, and the options available to them and it’s tough to draw the same conclusions La Canfora came away with. The only certainty is that Davis can’t be playing for New Orleans this year as his contract is currently written. Whether it’s another restructure, extension, or something else, something’s got to give.

One NFL insider believes Watson may never return to form

Can Watson bounce back in 2023 or is there too much to overcome?

Washington Post NFL insider Jason La Canfora joined 92.3 the Fan in Cleveland on Wednesday and discussed several topics including Deshaun Watson. La Canfora believes that Watson’s struggles are mental and that they are beyond football. Pointing out that he had such a great reputation for charity work in the community and that it is all turned upside down likely forever.

They talked about how before the allegations came out most people would have never suspected Watson would do those sorts of actions. La Canfora thinks that it could all be too much and that what you saw in 2022 might be the new normal for the Browns quarterback.

That would be an absolute nightmare for the Browns and would set the franchise back yet again. Will time and another offseason help Watson return to form or will the trade be an even more damaging one, only time will tell.

How many games will Watson play this season? NFL Insider makes prediction

After being traded to the Cleveland Browns this offseason and signing a new five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million deal with the franchise, former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson is widely expected to face a suspension to start of the 2022 season before he suits up for the Browns.

So, how many games will the three-time Pro Bowler play in this year? An NFL Insider recently made a prediction.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora opined recently that Watson, who was cleared of all criminal charges earlier this year but still faces numerous civil lawsuits pertaining to sexual misconduct and assault allegations, will play fewer than eight games in 2022.

La Canfora expects Watson to receive a “considerable” suspension from the NFL to begin the season.

“Better to appear to be taking these allegations very seriously than not seriously enough, he got a full salary not to play last year and won’t lose much no matter how long he is suspended this year. Thus the only way to signal intent is with the length of the penalty. I expect it to be considerable,” La Canfora wrote.

Watson made his full salary last season with the Texans despite being a healthy scratch for every game. As La Canfora noted, the Browns reworked Watson’s contract to minimize the monetary hit of a potential suspension this season.

Drafted in the first round (12th overall) by the Texans in 2017, Watson led the NFL with 4,823 passing yards in 2020, when he last saw NFL action prior to sitting out last season amid his trade request and legal issues.

In his career, Watson has completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdowns with 36 interceptions.

Report: Bears trade offer for Russell Wilson involved Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks

Defenders Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack were potentially involved in Chicago’s proposed Russell Wilson trade with the Seattle Seahawks.

It was previously reported that the Chicago Bears offered the Seattle Seahawks three first-round picks, a third-round pick, and two starters for quarterback Russell Wilson.

The identities of the players included in the potential trade package were not initially mentioned, but NFL reporter Jason La Canfora revealed that his sources told him that star defenders Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks were in the conversation.

Pete Carroll reportedly wasn’t interested in completely rebuilding the team, so it is very likely that Wilson will stay in the Emerald City for the 2021 season.

Mack and Hicks would certainly have provided. some assistance to Seattle’s defensive line, but the cost of their quarterback and his staggering $39 million dead cap hit would prove to be too much.

Could Pat Fitzgerald be the Bears’ next head coach?

While Matt Nagy’s job is safe heading into 2020, could another down year open the door for Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald to take over?

With just one game remaining in the 2019 NFL season, the offseason coaching carousel is beginning to take off, with some names already popping up on certain team’s radars.

Others, however, are supposedly distancing themselves from open positions around the league, such as Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. But could he be waiting for an opportunity closer to home?

According to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, the Wildcats coach recently declined an opportunity to interview for the Carolina Panthers vacant coaching position, a position that was open after the of firing longtime head coach Ron Rivera earlier this season.

This isn’t the first time Fitzgerald’s name has been linked with open coaching positions, whether it’s the NFL or the NCAA, but La Canfora writes the 45-year old coach would only leave Evanston if the Bears’ head coaching job opens up:

There is a strong sense among NFL executives that if Fitzgerald ever did leave Northwestern, it would be for the Chicago Bears job. He may well end up as a lifer with the Wildcats, but the Illinois native has been linked to the Bears in the past, and Matt Nagy will enter 2020 on the proverbial hot seat after his offense, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and the entire Bears team regressed significantly this season after reaching the playoffs in 2018.

After capturing the NFC North division title with a 12-4 record in 2018, coach Matt Nagy and the Bears followed it up with a disappointing 2019 season with a 7-8 record through 15 games. Nagy’s job is safe going into 2020, but he and general manager Ryan Pace could be on the hot seat with another down year.

Fitzgerald, meanwhile, has been Northwestern’s head coach since 2006, compiling a record of 99-79. Despite a lackluster 2019 season in which the Wildcats went 3-9, Fitzgerald led his team to nine bowl appearances during his tenure, including Northwestern’s first bowl victory in 64 years when they defeated Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl back in the 2012-13 season.

Fitzgerald has given no indication he’ll leave Northwestern and he was not interviewed for the Bears’ coaching position two years ago when they hired Nagy, but depending on what happens in the next season or two, the front office could set their sights to the north shore for their next head coach.

WATCH: Urban Meyer reportedly could be target to take over Browns

In keeping with the tradition of 2019, Urban Meyer has been named as a possible replacement for a coach that hasn’t been fired yet.

In keeping with the tradition of 2019, Urban Meyer has been named as a possible replacement for a coach that hasn’t been fired yet.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora writes that the former Ohio State coach is a possibility to lead the Cleveland Browns, a job that currently belongs to first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens.

La Canfora cites a “very strong bond” between Meyer and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, calling the two confidants. La Canfora also notes that Meyer is still highly respected in the area for his run with the Ohio State Buckeyes, who won a national championship for the 2014 season under his guidance.

Meyer’s name has been tossed into conversations for the Dallas Cowboys’ job (still occupied by Jason Garrett) and the Washington Redskins’ job (occupied by interim head coach Bill Callahan). He was also mentioned in speculation to take over at USC before the Trojans opted to retain Clay Helton.
