2023 NFL draft: Top targets at every position of need for the Browns

Who is an ideal prospect per position in the draft?

It has been a productive offseason with a solid free agency period and the 2023 NFL draft just a couple of weeks away for the Cleveland Browns and the rest of the NFL. Cleveland is in a solid place going into the draft without major glaring holes allowing them to truly target talent without forcing picks at certain positions.

But plenty of positions need depth and potential long-term answers after 2023. Though the team doesn’t have a first or second-round pick there is plenty of talent at positions of need that could provide long-term answers at positions that have none right now.

30 Browns prospects in 30 days: Jartavius Martin, Safety, Illinois

The versatile defensive back would be a great fit.

With the 2023 NFL draft just a couple of weeks away the Cleveland Browns are wrapping up pre-draft visits. One position of weakness that needs to be addressed is the depth at both safety and nickel cornerback.

Illinois safety Jartavius Martin could be the perfect prospect as a player that played a ton in the slot and as a deep free safety. Currently, the team doesn’t have a true slot defender on the roster, and only one free safety in Juan Thornhill.

Martin has great size and physicality to make an impact against the run from the slot which is much at the next level. He is sticky in man coverage with good ball skills and a nose for the football. He has good reactive quickness to go with his ability to track the ball in the air.

Martin is best in the slot, close to the line of scrimmage where he can use his strength and physicality. But if you need him to play as a deep safety blanket he does that at a decent level with a high football IQ to diagnose what is happening in front of him quickly.

2023 NFL draft: Seahawks hosted Illinois DB Jartavius Martin

The Seahawks hosted Illinois cornerback prospect Jartavius Martin for an official visit yesterday ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Seahawks had meetings with at least three defensive prospects yesterday. Top 2023 prospct Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter was the main attraction, but they also hosted Illinois nose tackle Calvin Avery.

According to Corbin Smith, they also got a visit from one of Avery’s most-interesting teammates: DB Jartavius “Quan” Martin.

You won’t find Martin in the conversation for top DB in the draft. However, he displayed tantalyzing measurables and athleticism at the 2023 Scouting Combine. Officially he’s listed as 5-foot-11, 194 pounds with 31.125″ arms and 9.625″ hands. Martin ran a 4.46 forty and posted an obscene 44″ vertical, plus an 11’1″ broad jump. Martin also comes with versatility, having experience in the slot and as a safety.

In 50 games at Illinois, he totaled 225 tackles (10.5 for a loss), seven interceptions, 22 passes defensed and three forced fumbles. Here are the highlights from his 2022 season.

For now Martin is projected to come off the board in the second round.

Eagles address four big needs in Mel Kiper’s latest 2-round 2023 NFL mock draft

The Philadelphia Eagles added an offensive tackle, running back, edge rusher, and a hybrid safety in Mel Kiper’s latest two-round 2023 NFL mock draft

After losing ten key contributors in free agency, the Eagles have needs all across the board, but reinforcements are on the way courtesy of the NFL draft.

Philadelphia has six picks currently, and Mel Kiper believes Howie Roseman will flip a first-round choice into two valuable second-round selections.

In Kiper’s latest two-round mock draft for ESPN, he has Howie Roseman landing the best offensive tackle on the board, the second-best running back on the board, and two valuable defenders after swapping picks with the Seahawks for the 30th overall pick.

NFL Draft: 12 mid/late-round prospects that could be steals for the Eagles

We’re looking at 12 mid to late-round NFL draft prospects that could end up being steals for the Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have had success hitting on late-round picks in the past few years, with Jordan Mailata (2018), Kenneth Gainwell (2021), Jack Driscoll (2020), Quez Watkins (2020), Josh Sweat (2018), Nathan Gerry, Jalen Mills, and Jason Kelce being some of the late round picks who’ve played in a Super Bowl.

The 2023 NFL draft offers Philadelphia another opportunity to reload in the late rounds.

The expectation is that GM Howie Roseman will move around the board, acquiring draft assets and a large group of undrafted free agents.

With the draft just three weeks away, we’re taking an early look at 12 mid to late-round prospects that could end up as steals for the Eagles.

Commanders hosting another Illinois defensive back on top 30 visit

The Illinois secondary is popular.

Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon is arguably the top defensive back in the 2023 NFL draft. Many expect either Witherspoon or Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez to be the first cornerback selected in the draft. And there’s a good chance one or both will land inside the top 10.

For as good as Witherspoon is, and he’s outstanding, the Fighting Illini have two other defensive backs to watch in the upcoming draft. Safeties Sydney Brown and Jartavius Martin are the two other Illinois defensive backs to know.

The Washington Commanders are interested in a cornerback. The Commanders have brought in multiple top cornerback prospects for top 30 visits and were recently present at Witherspoon’s private workout this week. But there’s a good chance Witherspoon will be gone by the time the Commanders pick at No. 16. Therefore, Washington could target another cornerback, such as Joey Porter Jr., Emmanuel Forbes, or Deonte Banks.

However, if one of the top corners Washington likes is gone, the Commanders may pick another position, such as an offensive lineman. That means Washington may look to add a cornerback prospect in another round.

A new name has emerged for the Commanders, courtesy of Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, and it is Witherspoon’s college teammate, Martin.

While Martin isn’t a first-round prospect, and Washington doesn’t necessarily need another safety, Martin has the position-flex head coach Ron Rivera loves. He can also play slot cornerback — and at a high level. In addition to providing safety depth, Martin could also step right in as Washington’s slot cornerback in 2023.

The 5-foot-11, 194-pound Martin posted outstanding testing numbers at the NFL combine, running the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds and recording a 44″ vertical leap.

For Washington to use one of its top 30 visits on Martin indicates a clear interest because Martin is considered a mid-round [3rd-4th-round] prospect.

Podcast: Who should the Browns target at slot cornerback in the draft?

Which slot options should the Browns target?

One question still looms over the defensive side of the football for the Cleveland Browns: who will play slot cornerback this year? Greg Newsome has already expressed that he no longer wants to play inside and the Browns may look to the 2023 NFL Draft to find a replacement. Even if Newsome does play some inside they lack depth at the position.

In this week’s podcast, I break down my top four options for slot defenders in April’s draft and how they fit with the Browns. You can watch this week’s episode here and comment on who you think the team should take at the position to help round out the roster.

2023 NFL Draft: The top 9 safeties

From Brian Branch to Jartavius Martin, here are Doug Farrar’s top nine safeties in the 2023 NFL draft class.

In the modern NFL, it’s the rare safety who’s paid to be just a safety. Three players classified as safeties finished the 2022 season with six interceptions: Minkah Fitzpatrick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Justin Simmons of the Denver Broncos, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles. Each of those players had more than 100 snaps in the slot last season, and Gardner-Johnson’s deployment may have been most indicative of the ways in which defensive coordinators would like most of their safeties to play. He had 443 snaps at free safety, 202 in the box, and 208 in the slot.

If you are going to be a traditional deep safety most of the time, as Quandre Diggs of the Seattle Seahawks was with a league-leading 1,012 of his 1,221 snaps in the deep third, you’d better be some kind of ballhawk. Last season, only 21 players had more than 600 snaps at pure free safety, and the slot percentages for most safeties have increased exponentially over the last few years. In an NFL where nickel is the new base defense, and most defenses are playing as much or more dime than old-school base, the ways things worked before don’t work now most of the time.

So, when we look at the top nine draft prospects classified as safeties in this draft class, we’re focusing on positional versatility above all, and if positional versatility isn’t the thing, there had best be one mega/alpha skill if you want to make this list.

No matter where they play on the field from snap to snap, here are our nine best safeties for the 2023 NFL draft.

4 nickel cornerback options for the Browns in the 2023 NFL Draft

Could the Browns find a slot cornerback in the draft?

Last season former first-round pick Greg Newsome II was the primary slot player for the Cleveland Browns with mixed results. He has, however, expressed that he no longer wishes to play inside so if the team is looking for a new starter or just slot depth the draft has some intriguing options.

General manager Andrew Berry loves players with versatility, and this class has a lot of slot players that also play deep safety as well as an outside corner. Though the team has invested a lot in the position, in the modern NFL you can never have enough cornerbacks. Especially when Newsome and Denzel Ward are likely to miss time with an injury.
