Texans GM Nick Caserio says C Jarrett Patterson has positional flexibility

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio says that center Jarrett Patterson also has position flex.

The Houston Texans appeared to make a redundant selection in Round 6 of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Texans picked former Notre Dame center Jarrett Patterson, even though they took Penn State center Juice Scruggs in Round 2 — trading up for the former Nittany Lion, no less.

What the Texans like about Patterson is his versatility, not just his experience as a center, both of which were on display at the Senior Bowl.

“Let’s say he and Juice are kind of similar, but they’re kind of different,” Caserio said. “Gives us a little depth and maybe some versatility inside.”

Scruggs and Patterson have played at both guard positions and center.

“In the case of Scruggs, center to guard, he can potentially play all three,” said Caserio. “Patterson has played all three. He started at center, I want to say in ’21 or whatever year it was, then he started at guard. He’s done both. Essentially it says he can play all three positions. How does he fare relative to someone else inside? When you’re taking seven to eight offensive linemen into the game, the ability to do multiple is going to enhance that player’s overall value.”

The Texans have three interior offensive linemen on the roster with Jimmy Morrissey, Michael Deiter and Scott Quessenberry, who started 16 games for Houston last year. Houston is also counting on starter-level contributions from Shaq Mason and Kenyon Green at guard.

NFL draft: Texans draft Notre Dame offensive lineman on day 3

Congrats to Jarrett Patterson on being drafted!

Two-time Notre Dame captain [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] has a new home after being drafted by the Houston Texans.  They picked Patterson in the sixth round with the 201st overall pick.

Patterson has been a main-stay on Notre Dame’s offensive line as he’s started the last four seasons.  He started his career as a tackle before moving to center where he starred.   He moved to guard for the 2022 campaign.  Patterson was named a second-team All-American at Notre Dame.

Patterson is the first Notre Dame product to be drafted by the Texans since 2016.  That year Houston used a first round pick on receiver Will Fuller and a second round pick on Nick Martin.

WATCH: Best Notre Dame highlights from Texans C Jarrett Patterson

Take a look at some of the best highlights from Houston Texans C Jarrett Patterson when he played for Notre Dame.

Jarrett Patterson will be tasked with protecting the Houston Texans’ new franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud in 2023 and could be a key part of the team’s offensive line in the coming seasons. A smart and instinctive lineman, Patterson’s status as a sixth-round pick belies his ability to deploy effective blocks on a consistent basis, and in time, he could go down as one of the best picks of Day 3 in this class.

Check out some of Patterson’s best plays from his time at Notre Dame below to get acquainted with his skillset ahead of the 2023 season:

The Houston Texans are taking another center.

The Texans picked former Notre Dame center Jarrett Patterson No. 201 overall in Round 6 of the 2023 NFL draft Saturday.

Patterson turned in third-team All-ACC honors in 2020. The Laguna Hills, California, native played 48 games for the Fighting Irish with 3,099 snaps.

The Texans picked Juice Scruggs in Round 2 to provide depth at center and the rest of the interior offensive line. Houston already has veterans Jimmy Morrissey, Michael Deiter, and Scott Quessenberry on the roster.

Patterson is the sixth player from Notre Dame the Texans have drafted. The last time Houston picked a Notre Dame player was twice in 2016 with receiver Will Fuller in Round 1 and center Nick Martin in Round 3.

Top 25 Most All-Time NFL Draft Picks by College

Who will climb and who might fall this week?

The 2023 NFL draft gets started on Thursday night with the first round before rounds two and three take place Friday evening.  Saturday then sees the final four rounds happen in downtown Kansas City which happens to be home to the most recent Super Bowl champions.

You’ll certainly see more players drafted from the biggest college football programs.  Alabama and Ohio State could very easily have the first three picks all be products of their programs.

Here at Fighting Irish Wire we’re excited to see where [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag], [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], and perhaps another player or two from Notre Dame end up.

So which programs have the most draft picks of all-time though as we get set for the latest edition of the draft?  Here are the colleges with the 25-most all-time draft picks ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

10 centers Broncos could target in 2023 NFL draft

If the Broncos want to bring in competition for Lloyd Cushenberry, they could target one of these centers during the NFL draft.

The Denver Broncos’ offensive line depth chart looks a lot better after the team added guard Ben Powers and tackle Ben McGlinchey in free agency, but the team could still use an upgrade at center.

Right now, Lloyd Cushenberry is penciled in on the depth chart as the team’s starting center, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos bring in more competition this weekend.

Denver has five picks to use in the draft this year, including a pair of picks (Nos. 67 and 68 overall) in the third round. Two weeks ago, we had the Broncos use pick No. 67 to select Wisconsin center Joe Tippmann in our mock draft.

Tippmann might not end up falling to the third round, but there will be plenty of other prospects to monitor even if Tippman doesn’t fall to Denver. Here’s a quick list of 10 names to watch for during the draft from Thursday to Saturday.

1 iOL prospect for the Colts in each round of NFL draft

Taking a look at the best C/G prospects for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts are closing in on the 2023 NFL draft where they likely will use a number of their picks to address the offensive line.

One of the biggest needs that remain throughout the offseason is the interior offensive line. While Quenton Nelson holds down the left guard spot, center Ryan Kelly was the subject of trade rumors, and the right guard position currently doesn’t have a projected starter.

There are still some free agents the Colts could target for the right guard position, but we should expect them to dive heavily into the draft class next weekend.

For the purpose of covering both centers and guards, we proposed a “best prospect fit” for each position in each round.

Following this series of articles, we’ve also looked at these positions:

We’ll be tracking the Colts’ reported interest in the 2023 draft class so be sure to keep up with latest updates via our tracker.

Here’s a look at one guard and one center prospect who fit the Colts in each round of the draft:

Cowboys aren’t honed in, but showing interest in interior OL help in draft

5 interior OL prospects for the Cowboys to consider; it’s the one area of the team they haven’t gone all out in upgrading for 2023. | From @TimLettiero

Dallas fans and media alike are caught in a verbiage tornado trying to put together clues as to what the plan is for this year’s offensive line, specifically along the interior. In all of this uncertainty, Dallas has set themselves up well for the 2023 draft by keying in on other positions during the offseason. But offensive line, save for the addition of Chuma Edoga, hasn’t been addressed.

Both guard positions, as well as center, can be considered set for the start of the season but are huge question marks long term. Right guard Zack Martin is as reliable and consistent as they come but will be turning 33 meaning his replacement will likely be coming in the near future. Center Tyler Biadasz has manned the position since coming into the league and has shown consistent improvement but is entering the last year of his rookie deal and arguably has not played well enough to earn a big time second deal.

As for left guard, Tyler Smith is a logical choice but the club has tried to keep things uncertain whether he’ll land there or back outside at tackle.

There have been a handful of combine meetings and top-30 visits, suggesting an interest in selecting a lineman but not necessarily an edict to do so. Here are five options Dallas has focused their gaze on.

Notre Dame offensive lineman makes big proclamation heading into 2023 season

The Irish have the potential to live up to this statement

If there is someone that talks the talk and walks the walk on [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag]’s offensive line, it’s tackle [autotag]Joe Alt[/autotag]. In his two years in South Bend, Alt has been named a freshman All-American and then an All-American.

The expectation for him and his position group this coming season is sky high and Alt has made it even bigger. In a quote shared by Pro Football Focus, the soon-to-be preseason All-American believes the Irish offensive line will be the best in the nation.

There were not many losses from this past seasons group, [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] is the only starter that needs to be replaced. Also gone is offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] and in comes [autotag]Joe Rudolph[/autotag]. The group is expected not to miss a beat and be one of the best, if not, the best in the country this coming fall.

8 players from the Combine who stood out as potential Detroit Lions targets

These eight players stood out in Combine workouts and interviews as players who figure to interest the Lions

It was quite a week in Indianapolis at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Over 200 players auditioned for their upcoming football fates in front of hundreds of media and all 32 NFL teams.

We also got to speak with most NFL coaches and GMs, including Detroit’s Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. But here, the focus is on the players.

From their athletic testing to their interviews, as well as how they played their respective positions in college, these players stood out amongst the Combine participants as players I strongly believe the Lions will rate highly coming out of Indianapolis.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell had a great quote about evaluating players at the NFL Scouting Combine

Not all of these players are first-rounders. Many are in the Day 2/early Day 3 range of talents. The purpose here isn’t to advocate for any of them, but to shed more light on players who possess the qualities that this Lions regime has said they look for in players, both in words and in their prior two draft histories.
