Tony Bradley, other veterans joined Sam Dekker for workout with Sixers

Along with Sam Dekker, the Philadelphia 76ers also worked out Tony Bradley and two other veterans.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be in the running for almost every big name that pops up on the market with free agency set to begin on June 30. It makes sense when considering the team’s title aspirations and the fact that they have the cap space to get it done.

With that being said, the Sixers also need to fill out the rest of the roster with some helpful role players who can help them get the job done in the East and overtake the Boston Celtics.

The Sixers recently worked out former Houston Rockets forward Sam Dekker, but he was not alone in that workout. Former Sixers big man Tony Bradley joined him along with former first-round picks Jarrett Culver and Stanley Johnson. Bradley played for Philadelphia in the 2020-21 season.

While with the Sixers, Bradley averaged 5.5 points and 5.2 rebounds before being sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the George Hill deal. He played for the Chicago Bulls in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

Culver has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Atlanta Hawks in his career while Johnson has played for the Detroit Pistons, the New Orleans Pelicans, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Toronto Raptors, and San Antonio Spurs.

Timberwolves have had talks with Hawks to acquire No. 6 overall pick

Minnesota has reportedly had discussions with the Hawks to acquire a second lottery pick in the NBA draft.

[jwplayer qRgRy1hw]

With one week to go until the NBA draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves have reportedly had discussions with the Atlanta Hawks to acquire the sixth overall pick, according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer.

The Timberwolves are looking to add a second lottery pick and could be willing to include Jarrett Culver and the 17th overall pick in a potential deal. However, the Hawks have other potential suitors for the pick, including the New Orleans Pelicans and Boston Celtics.

Minnesota could be looking to acquire an additional lottery pick in order to package it with the No. 1 pick and trade for a star player. Last week, a report surfaced that indicated the front office would be open to trading Culver if it meant they could acquire a star player.

With Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell on the team, the Timberwolves have been rumored into wanting to make a trade in order to give their two stars some help. The organization is trying to win now and is looking to cash in on the top pick in the draft.

Minnesota acquired Culver with the sixth overall pick in last year’s draft and believe he has a bright future ahead. While the team is high on his potential, including him in a potential deal to acquire a star player would likely be a gamble the front office is willing to make.

By all accounts, the Timberwolves have been active in trade discussions leading up to the draft and that could eventually come to fruition with a potential deal to be agreed upon on or before draft night.

The NBA draft is scheduled to begin on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. EST on ESPN.

Report: Timberwolves appear to be open to trading Jarrett Culver

Minnesota is looking to acquire players that can help win now and could look to include Jarrett Culver in a potential deal.

[jwplayer k7zH6sSU]

Armed with the top pick in the NBA draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves have a tremendous opportunity to improve their roster. With Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell on the team, the Timberwolves are hardly rebuilding anymore and the organization is even said to be open to trading the pick to add help around their two star players.

Minnesota is clearly looking to win now and is making every attempt in order to do so. With all of its options on the table, the organization would reportedly even consider including rookie Jarrett Culver in a potential deal if it could help its attempt to acquire a star player, according to Zach Lowe of ESPN.

Jarrett Culver’s name has entered the rumor mill, and my best read is the Wolves would deal Culver now only in a blockbuster for a star — or for a high draft pick that would help in acquiring said star.

The Timberwolves have been active in trade talks surrounding the No. 1 overall pick but no deal has yet to materialize. The franchise is looking to include the pick in a package for an All-NBA-type of player but has had no luck to this point.

Minnesota acquired Culver with the sixth overall pick in last year’s draft and believe he has a bright future ahead. While the team is high on his potential, including him in a potential deal to acquire a star player would likely be a gamble the front office is willing to make.

The Western Conference is shaping up to be ultra-competitive next season and the duo of Towns and Russell may not be enough to enter the top tier of teams. The Timberwolves know they need to make a move and it will be a situation worth monitoring in the coming days.

Rookie Wire Review: Can Jarrett Culver turn it around?

Jarrett Culver’s rookie was a disappointment by many metrics. How can he turn things around going forward?

[jwplayer kSHbmusT]

When the Minnesota Timberwolves moved up to select Texas Tech wing Jarrett Culver sixth in the 2019 NBA Draft, many praised the move. Coming off of a national championship appearance, Culver was the perfect complementary wing piece to Karl-Anthony Towns, a prospect who could play great defense, play make and hopefully hit jumpers in time.

Unfortunately for Minnesota, most of that promise failed to come to fruition, as Culver’s rookie season was largely a disappointment. He posted 13.9 points, 2.6 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals shooting 29.9% from three and 46.2% from the line with a brutal rTS% of -9.3%.

One area where Culver’s projection was semi-accurate was defensively, where he had a solid season for a rookie on the wing. Player Impact Plus-Minus has Culver as a slight negative (-0.3) and this is accurate if underselling his defensive ability a bit. Only six rookies who recorded over 900 minutes had a higher DPIPM than Culver.

Culver made plays off of the ball, showcasing generally good instincts and anticipation as a team defender and his size and strength made him a solid point of attack defender, capable against ball-screens and especially effective stymieing smalls:

As almost all rookies do, Culver struggled at times navigating ball-screens and occasionally missed rotations as a help defender:

On the whole, Culver’s defense is at a good point at this stage of his career and most expect him to continue to grow on that end into a positive defender. Minnesota’s defense was one of the worst in the NBA and Culver’s presence improved their defensive rating by 2.1 points. And though the defense was fairly as-expected for Culver, the offense underwhelmed by every metric.

Culver’s main weakness offensively coming into the NBA was his scoring creation, with concern surrounding his jumper and ball-handling. Yet, many had confidence in both to relative degrees, based on Culver’s strength, touch and slashing technique and his decent free-throw percentage and better shooting as a freshman with lower usage.

In his rookie season, his inability to separate and inability to make shots resulted in one of the least efficient rookie seasons in NBA history and a -1.63 OPIPM, which would be lower without improvement as his season went on.

Only 15 rookies in NBA history (>500 minutes) have shot below 30% from three and 50% from the line, the majority of the list being non-NBA players or role players, with Karl Malone as an amusing inclusion and a major outlier.

Culver’s loose handle, lack of burst and weak gravitational pull resulted in a myriad of difficult shots for Culver, which he struggled to convert. Even with breathing room, Culver often settled for tougher shots than necessary, missed open shots and when he did make shots, he had to overcome defenders draped all over him.

His finishing was abysmal, shooting 49.8% around the rim in the half-court, placing in the 23rd percentile. Among players with 200 or more rim attempts, only Miles Bridges and RJ Barrett were worse at the rim:

The jump shooting was just as poor for Culver, his catch-and-shoot efficiency in the 21st percentile and his 42.6 effective field goal percentage was only better than five other players: Eric Gordon, Jae Crowder, Justin Jackson, Jordan Poole and Aaron Gordon (min 100 attempts).

His pull-up efficiency wasn’t horrible, placing in the 46th percentile on off-dribble jumpers. Still, the projection for his shooting on- and off-ball long term is murky, to say the least, given his inability to create separation, wonky mechanics and historically bad free-throw percentage:

Culver’s best chance to improve his effectiveness as a scorer is for his offense to generate advantages off of the ball and get him loose downhill or switched onto smaller defenders. In these areas, Culver flashed some ability to finish against weaker opponents with strength, size and touch:

Culver’s passing was his biggest offensive selling point as a prospect, as the best wing passer in his class. While many believed his on-ball passing would wane, he should have been an effective ancillary playmaker on the wing.

Though Culver showed some passing prowess, his passing underwhelmed relative to expectations, certainly as a function of the absence of scoring threat. Culver didn’t have much of a chance to facilitate and create in the Wolves’ offense and when he did, the result wasn’t great. Culver recorded 336 drives, the third most on the team, with only 14 assists and 17 turnovers.

Even when Culver had openings, he wasn’t as willing to try difficult passes and when he did, he often coughed the ball up. While there were accuracy and decision making issues, Culver flashes some competence as a pick-and-roll distributor at his size, threading pocket passes and hitting poppers regularly.

Most effective passing after a dribble-handoff, a pre-generated advantage lessened the strain on Culver, making decisions easier and passing windows wider:

Heading into his second season, Culver has a long way to go until he can fit his projection as a high-level role-playing two-way wing on a contending team. Even if his defense continues to progress and Culver develops into a good to great wing defender, his offensive is simply untenable on a team that wants to compete.

The good news is Culver has nowhere to go but up in terms of offensive efficiency and any improvement to his shooting would be vital to his future projection. Still, it seems Culver is an offensive player who, at this rate, has to be schemed to succeed. If his passing can regress back to the level it was at during his sophomore season, Culver could be a valuable offensive role player in time, but likely not a starter if the jumper is this bad.

Playing next to Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell could provide him an offensive boost next year, but without serious progression, Culver’s NBA future is gloomy.

Zion, Morant headline the rookies on SportsCenter’s top 10 dunks list

No dunk list would be complete without Zion Williamson or Ja Morant.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”OH1iLzHb9H-765630-7498″]

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson and Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant headlined the group of rookie players that appeared on SportsCenter’s top 10 dunks of the 2019-20 NBA season.

No dunk list would be complete without Williamson or Morant as the first two picks in the 2019 NBA Draft have become some of the top high-flyers in the league this season.

In addition to Williamson and Morant, Sekou Doumbouya of the Detroit Pistons and Jarrett Culver of the Minnesota Timberwolves also appeared on the list as the Class of 2019 was well-represented.

  • 10: Williamson dunks on Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma
  • 8: Doumbouya stands over Tristan Thompson after posterizing him
  • 4: Culver jams it over Robin Lopez
  • 2: Morant bodies Aron Baynes

The rookie class had quite a showing this season from a highlight standpoint after claiming four of the top 10 dunks, according to ESPN. The players all appear to have a bright future and a place in future #SCTopTen lists.

Rookie Wire Power Rankings: Ja Morant once again tops all players

Rookie Wire takes a look at the top rookies through the latest week of the 2019-20 NBA season.

With the NBA season officially halfway over, some rookies are beginning to separate themselves as the creme of the crop while others are just getting started.

Of course, the rookie class will receive a jolt of energy with No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson set to make his official NBA debut next week with the New Orleans Pelicans.

While the NBA community awaits the debut of Williamson, second overall pick Ja Morant has started to establish himself as the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year given his outstanding play this season.

While Morant is off and running with the hardware, Rookie Wire will take a look at how some of the other first-year players are performing and where they stack up in the class.

Here are the latest Rookie Wire Power Rankings:

All stats are through games played on Jan. 15

5. Sekou Doumbouya, Detroit Pistons

Stats: 8.1 points, 3.1 rebounds

Last Rank: N/A

Since first earning significant playing time earlier this month, Doumbouya has not disappointed. Doumbouya, the youngest player in the NBA, is averaging 14 points and 5.3 rebounds in eight games during January. Doumbouya recorded a career-high 24 points on Wednesday in a win over the Boston Celtics and has scored in double figures in seven of his last eight games.

4. Kendrick Nunn, Miami Heat

Stats: 15.9 points, 3.6 assists, 2.7 rebounds

Last Rank: 2

Nunn is coming off of a 33-point performance Wednesday night in a win over the San Antonio Spurs. The undrafted guard finished by shooting 13-of-18 from the field, tying a career-high with five 3-pointers in the process. His scoring output has dropped a bit over the past month but Nunn is staying efficient and that has to be encouraging for the Heat. The team has said all season that any player is capable of going off each night and it was Nunn’s turn on Wednesday vs. the Spurs.

3. Darius Garland, Cleveland Cavaliers

Stats: 12.3 points, 3.6 assists, 2 rebounds

Last Rank: N/A

After an inconsistent start to the season, Garland has really emerged for the Cavaliers over the past two months. The fifth overall pick has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games and is averaging 16.3 points per game since the start of January. Garland recorded his first career double-double on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers with 14 points and 10 assists.

2. R.J. Barrett, New York Knicks

Stats: 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.1 steals

Last Rank: N/A

Barrett kicked off his rookie campaign on a bit of a tear but slowed down shortly after that. After some inconsistent play, Barrett is back to his dominating ways as the third overall pick is averaging 16.4 points and 5.4 rebounds over his last eight games with the Knicks. Perhaps most impressive is Barrett looks to be slowly improving from the free-throw line. He is converting on 76.1% of his attempts in January, a significant improvement over his 60.6% on the season. Maybe his strong recent play can be attributed to his new look, or perhaps Barrett is beginning to settle in this season. Whatever it is, Barrett looks to be back where he belongs: Near the top of the power rankings.

1. Ja Morant, Memphis Grizzlies

Stats: 18 points, 6.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1 steal

Last Rank: 1

The collective NBA media is running out of ways to show how dominant Morant has been this season. Morant has rarely looked like a rookie and his play has put the Grizzlies among the top teams to watch on League Pass. Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady said on ESPN’s “The Jump” on Wednesday that he believes Morant will one day be an MVP and the best player in the league. Based on his incredible start this season, McGrady’s take may not be all that hot.

Honorable Mention:

P.J. Washington, Charlotte Hornets: 12.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2 assists

Since returning from a broken finger, Washington has played well for the Hornets. In 11 games played, Washington is averaging 12.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He has totaled 34 points over his last two games and recently recorded his first 20-point double-double.

Tyler Herro, Miami Heat: 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists

The rookie guard is averaging 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 38 games this season with the Heat. Herro ranks sixth in rookie scoring, sixth in total field goals (186) and is tied for first in 3-pointers made (80). He did not play on Wednesday due to a bruised left knee but the injury does not appear to be serious.

Jarrett Culver, Minnesota Timberwolves: 9.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2 assists

Culver appears to be turning the corner on offense after scoring in double figures in nine consecutive games for the first time this season. Against the Pacers on Wednesday, Culver seemingly had his whole bag of skills on display: His defense, ability to drive to the basket and get his teammates involved. Though it may have taken a bit longer than expected, Culver looks to be settling in this season with the Timberwolves.

Shout Out:

Naz Reid, Minnesota Timberwolves

After beginning the season in the G League, Reid is seeing his first extended action of the season with the varsity club. Reid is averaging 9.8 points and 3.1 rebounds for the Timberwolves after recently scoring a career-high 20 points.

Bucks’ Robin Lopez chases down Jarrett Culver after getting posterized

This highlight reel dunk nearly led to a fight in Wednesday’s Timberwolves-Bucks game.

Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Jarrett Culver delivered the best dunk of the New Year on Wednesday over 7-foot-0 Bucks big man Robin Lopez, but what happened after the play was just as interesting. With the Timberwolves down four points with just under 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Culver drove around a screen at the top of the three-point arc and elevated over Lopez, throwing down a colossal one-handed jam as Lopez tried to recover and block the shot.

When Culver landed, he flexed and yelled in Lopez’s direction, which earned him a technical foul on the play. Lopez was irate, and he chased Culver down the court to confront him after the play.

Culver ran away when he saw Lopez coming, but Lopez escaped punishment despite shoving one of Culver’s teammates aside while trying to get to him. The Bucks went on to win the game, 106-104, but Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders said he loved Culver’s play, even despite the costly technical.

“Love it. Just love it. Love it. That’s…. that’s… I love it.”

Well said, coach.

Jarrett Culver set a new career-high in Timberwolves’ overtime win

Culver topped his previous career-high of 20 set on Nov. 2 after converting on 8-of-21 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range,

Minnesota Timberwolves rookie guard Jarrett Culver recorded a career-high 21 points on Monday night in a 122-115 overtime win over the Brooklyn Nets.

Culver topped his previous career-high of 20 set on Nov. 2 after converting on 8-of-21 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, while he added five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.

The first-round pick had cooled off with the Timberwolves over the past couple of weeks, totaling just 26 points over his last eight games, but bounced back in a big way on Monday. He scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to help the Timberwolves force OT.

While Culver only shot 38.1% from the field during the game, the sixth overall pick played with confidence throughout the night and it showed in his final stat line.

Culver had had an up and down rookie campaign thus far but he flashed his two-way potential on Monday and gave a glimpse at why the Timberwolves nabbed him in the lottery.

The Timberwolves play next on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Bucks.
