Former Texas TE Jared Wiley announces transfer to TCU

Jared Wiley is staying in the Big 12.

Another former Longhorn will be making his way to TCU to play for new head coach Sonny Dykes.

Jared Wiley, the third-year tight end, announced his transfer destination on Saturday. Between nagging injuries and being buried on the depth chart behind super-senior Cade Brewer, Wiley was not as utilized this past season as many thought he would be.

Wiley will remain in the Big 12 and suit up for the Horned Frogs next season.

Wiley marks the second Longhorn in the past two days to find a new home, as former quarterback Casey Thompson announced that he would be transferring to Nebraska. He also marks the second Longhorn to transfer to TCU, as linebacker Terrance Cooks announced he would play for the Horned Frogs in November.

He finished his Texas career with 19 catches for 348 yards and three touchdowns.

With both Wiley and Brewer leaving, the Longhorns will have to rely on the younger tight ends like Ja’Tavion Sanders, Gunner Helm, and Juan Davis to fill the void.

Predicting how the Texas offense will look in 2022 after NSD1

Way-too-early prediction on how the Texas offense will look next season.

The early signing period gave Texas fans a reason to be excited again after a 5-7 campaign.

Texas currently has the No. 5 class in the country with multiple highly sought-after prospects signed. Steve Sarkisian and his staff got high school athletes to see the vision of what they could build at Texas and sold them on becoming the change.

In particular, the class Texas signed on offense should bring many early contributors.

Five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers made national headlines after he announced his transfer from Ohio State. Ewers flirted with a couple of other in-state programs before deciding to sign with Texas.

Kyle Flood gave the offensive line a major shot in the arm signing a six-man class with plenty of size and experience. Flipping five-star tackle Kelvin Banks opened the floodgates for others to join him on the offensive line.

A wide receiver who will likely see the field early is four-star Brenen Thompson. The track star is a perfect fit for Sarkisian’s offense at a position Texas has very little depth at.

Here is an early prediction at the Texas starting offense:

Steve Sarkisian provides injury report ahead of Rice matchup

Looking for a positive to come out of Arkansas, Texas mostly remained healthy. Only two players are expected to miss Saturday’s game vs Rice.

Looking for a positive to come out of the Arkansas game, Texas mostly remained healthy. Only two players are expected to miss to game against Rice on Saturday.

The first is wide receiver Troy Omeire. The redshirt freshman has yet to play a snap for the Longhorns despite it being his second year on campus. The former four-star is still rehabilitating a knee injury.

“Troy [Omeire] at this point, I would imagine, probably week to week,” Sarkisian said.

Cornerback Jahdae Barron is the second player expected to be out. After getting some snaps against Arkansas, the sophomore will not be back until the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma at the earliest. It’s another knee issue but this time, a sprain.

For some positive news, tight end Jared Wiley will be back in the lineup this weekend. Horns247 was the first to report he was back in practice and expected to play vs the Owls. The head coach confirmed the report on Thursday.

Adding Wiley back into the offense should open up a different dimension for Sarkisian on Saturday. From a blocking and pass game standpoint, using an experienced tight end should help a ton in 12 personnel.

It’s Rice but Texas desperately needs to get back on track. Wiley should be a great weapon for both Casey Thompson and Hudson Card.

Report: Tight end Jared Wiley back in practice, expected to play against Rice

Texas will be getting Jared Wiley back for Rice on Saturday. According to Horns247, the tight end is back in practice and is expected to play.

One of the few injuries Texas has dealt with early in the season has been Jared Wiley. The tight end’s shoulder has been bothering him throughout fall camp and it’s bled into the first two games.

Wiley played limited snaps in the opener against Louisiana and then completely missed last week’s Arkansas game. Texas ran a lot more one tight end formations and struggled to block the Razorbacks’ defensive front.

Thankfully, it seems as if Texas will be getting Wiley back this weekend against Rice. According to Horns247, he is back in practice and is expected to play against Rice on Saturday.

Wiley is still listed as TE2 on the depth chart, having an ‘OR’ next to his name with Gunnar Helm. However, it is believed if Wiley is fully healthy, he will be the one to get most of the playing time.

There is more to offer than just extra blocking from Wiley.

It’s no secret Hudson Card struggled throwing the ball downfield in Fayetteville. With Casey Thompson taking over this weekend, getting a receiving tight end back in the lineup should allow Sarkisian to diversify his play calling. The offense needs to get back on track quickly.

Steve Sarkisian provides injury report heading into Arkansas matchup

Head coach Steve Sarkisian provided an injury report before traveling to Arkansas.

Texas came out of the season opener against Louisiana without any major injuries. Junior Angilau was the only one to leave the game with a problem.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed the guard would be good to go Saturday against Arkansas. Angilau is expected to keep his place as the starting right guard and was at the position on the depth chart released Monday afternoon.

Flipping to the not-so-positive news, two players are in danger of missing the trip to Fayetteville.

Sarkisian said tight end Jared Wiley would be a game-time decision. He has been dealing with a shoulder injury throughout fall camp and only got a few snaps against Louisiana.

True freshman Gunnar Helm stepped up in his place as the H-back tight end. Neither player recorded a reception.

Wide receiver Tory Omeire was the only non-season-ending injury to miss out last week. It sounds like he will continue to miss time with a knee injury.

After tearing his ACL in fall camp last year, Omeire seemed to retweak the injury during the open practice in late August.

“Troy [Omeire] is rehabbing, he’s running, he looks good,” said Sarkisian. “Hopefully, we get him back sooner rather than later but we definitely want to make sure he is in the right space physically to do so.”

Texas Football: Six notes on the initial depth chart for Louisiana

Shortly after Steve Sarkisian’s press conference, the depth chart was released by Texas. Here are six notes on the initial three deep.

Steve Sarkisian’s first game week press conference was on Monday where Hudson Card was officially named the starting quarterback. Shortly after, the entire depth chart was released by Texas.

There were few surprises from the top to bottom. Since the Longhorns are returning a lot of talent from last season, many of the starters from last season will play similar roles.

Here is the full depth chart:

At the end of the day, the depth chart released could be completely different from what Sarkisian and his staff end up doing. In-game adjustments could be made based on matchups or a player could prove he has earned playing time throughout the practice week.

Until Saturday, all we have is a three-deep roster at all 29 positions listed. Sarkisian has proven via the quarterback battle he is going to play something closer to his chest.

Here are six notes on Texas’ initial depth chart for Saturday’s matchup against Louisiana:

The Athletic selects Texas TE Jared Wiley as a player poised for breakout season

The Athletic recently named 35 college football players that are poised for a breakout season in 2021.

When a new coaching staff comes to town, it provides more opportunities for players to prove themselves. Texas tight end Jared Wiley is hoping to do just that in 2021.

Wiley questionably received limited action last season, likely due to Tom Herman’s favoritism towards upperclassman, but he took advantage of every time he touched the field. Wiley has great size and athleticism at 6-foot-7, 255-pounds and has showcased his big-play ability on numerous occasions.

He very well could serve as the big safety blanket for whoever is selected as the starting quarterback and will likely see a much larger quantity of catches and yards in the new offensive system.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic recently identified 35 players from all over the country that he believes will have a break out season in 2021 and Wiley was included.

Texas coaches are excited about Wiley’s combination of blocking skills, an enormous catch radius and his vertical speed. He caught nine passes in 2020 but that should jump considerably this fall.

Wiley showed more flashes in the passing game when he got the ball in comparison to super senior Cade Brewer, but with Steve Sarkisian’s offense, both tight ends will likely see their numbers inflate.

In comparison with the top two Alabama tight ends Miller Forristall and Jahleel Billingsley who combined for 41 catches last season, the Longhorns tight end duo only combined for 24 catches. Alabama’s tight ends also accounted for 205 more receiving yards than Wiley and Brewer.

Considering Wiley is more explosive and a better pass catcher, Sarkisian’s offensive system will put him in position to showcase that he can be one of the nation’s best players at the tight end position.
