Washington chooses four protected practice squad players for Week 1

Washington chooses which four players to protect from its practice squad for Week 1.

The NFL and NFLPA agreed to modified rules for the practice squad in 2020. In July, the NFL announced those same rules would carry over into 2021.

Every NFL team can carry 16 players on its practice squad, six of whom may have more than two accrued seasons. The rule allows teams to place veterans on the practice squad, such as what Baltimore recently did with former All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell.

Another unique rule is each NFL team can protect up to four players per week from being signed off the practice squad to another NFL team’s active roster.

On Wednesday, Washington chose its four players for Week 1, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

LB Jordan Kunaszyk, G Wes Martin, LB Jared Norris and DL Daniel Wise.

It’s certainly interesting Washington chose to select two linebackers. Washington currently has five on the active roster.

All four protected players were with Washington in the offseason and in training camp.

Washington Week 10 injury designations: LT Geron Christian ruled OUT

The Detroit Lions Week 10 opponent, the Washington Football Team, has released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Detroit Lions Week 10 opponent, the Washington Football Team, has released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game and they will be without their starting left tackle for the second week in a row.

Here’s a look at Washington’s full injury designations list.

Ruled OUT/Questionable

Player Position Injury Designation
Kyle Allen QB (starter) Ankle OUT
Geron Christian LT (starter) Knee OUT
Dontrelle Inman WR (starter) Hamstring OUT
Jeff Badet WR Hamstring Questionable
Jared Norris LB Hamstring OUT
Dustin Hopkins K Groin Questionable

Allen suffered a pretty significant ankle injury in Week 9 and while he escaped a season-ending designation (for now) there was no way he was going to play this week. Washington will turn to Alex Smith — who himself is coming off a devastating injury — over 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins.

Christian will miss his second game in a row and Washington will lean on former Lion Cornelius Lucas at left tackle. He will be one of three former Lions to see the field on offense for Washington, with Logan Thomas starting at tight end and J.D. McKissic contributing at running back.

Inman hasn’t played in two weeks and has been replaced by Cam Sims in the starting lineup, but they did get some good news last week, returning starting slot receiver Steven Sims.

Hopkins looks like a game-time decision, so Washington took extra precautions this week, protecting practice squad kicker Kaare Vedvik. He could see a Saturday roster elevation as insurance for Hopkins. His one-year NFL resume consists of a missed field goal, a missed extra point, and three kickoffs, all touchbacks.

No Injury Designation

Player Position Injury Designation
Antonio Gibson RB (starter) Shoulder No injury designation
Thoams Davis LB Non-injury No injury designation

Gibson missed Wednesday’s practice with a shoulder injury but has been a full participant ever since. The impressive rookie should lead the backfield in touches, but McKissic will be in the mix quite a bit as well.

Washington signs former 5th-round pick RB Jonathan Williams to practice squad

Washington signed RB Jonathan Williams to the practice squad on Friday after Jared Norris was elevated to the active roster.

A few roster moves were made by Washington on Friday after RB Bryce Love was moved to the short-term IR to deal with a knee injury that has him temporarily unavailable to play. The move left an open spot on the 53-man roster, which has been filled by LB Jared Norris.

Washington has now filled their open spot on the practice squad, signing RB Jonathan Williams, a player who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Williams has bounced around the league a bit since being drafted, last spending time with the Detroit Lions earlier this season, and the Indianapolis Colts last season.

Williams appeared in nine games and recorded 49 carries for 235 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown on the 2019 season.

Redskins make minor add among big cuts

The Redskins added a linebacker recently.

The Washington Redskins made quite a few headlines Friday, primarily due to cutting Josh Norman and Paul Richardson in a bid to free up cap space.

One move that subsequently fell under the radar? The team adding a linebacker.

The Redskins quietly announced adding linebacker Jared Norris

Norris is a bid at upping the special teams unit before free agency even starts. He’s 26 years old and spent some time under Ron Rivera in Carolina from 2016-2018.

This is far from the biggest move in the world for the Redskins, especially compared to some of the headline items lately. But it’s yet another example of Rivera going to get guys he’s familiar with.

And while building a culture and adding new faces to all levels of the team, this move can’t go 100 percent ignored.
