Jared Gooden relishes fighting for job on 4 days’ notice at UFC on ESPN 28

Jared Gooden is going all in on short notice at UFC on ESPN 28.

[autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] knows he put himself in position to take on a big challenge at UFC on ESPN 28, but he said he’s up for it.

After losing his first two UFC appearances, Gooden (17-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) stepped up into a risky position on Saturday when he jumped in as a replacement opponent against Niklas Stolze (12-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC). The welterweight bout is part of the ESPN-televised main card from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Stolze’s original opponent fell out on fight week, and with just four days’ notice, Gooden offered his services. He said he was training hard when the opportunity came, and feels more prepared than the time would indicate.

That puts even more pressure on Gooden to win, he said. A loss could spell the end of his UFC run, but he said he’s keen to go all-in on this opportunity.

“I do believe my back is against the wall, and I kind of like it this way,” Gooden told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Thursday’s UFC on ESPN 28 media day. “Especially short notice. I feel like everything’s against me. Pressure makes diamonds or it works against you. I think it’s going to make me a diamond.”

Lazzez (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has been forced out of UFC on ESPN 28 due to visa issues and [autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] (17-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is targeted to step in on short notice to face [autotag]Niklas Stolze[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on Saturday.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Tuesday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Stolze took to Instagram Tuesday night to vent his frustration at the lack of communication between Lazzez’s camp and the UFC, where he only found out about the withdrawal on fight week.

Lazzez wasn’t happy with Stolze’s initial comments, vowing to make him pay whenever they cross paths.

Germany’s Stolze will be in search of his first UFC win. The 28-year-old saw his four-fight winning streak snapped in his promotional debut when he dropped a unanimous decision to Ramazan Emeev at UFC on ESPN 14 in July.

After dropping back-to-back unanimous decision losses to Alan Jouban and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, Gooden will also be in search of his first UFC win. A Titan FC, LFA, and Island Fights veteran, “Nite Train” has finished 13 of his 17 pro wins.

[autotag]Stipe Miocic[/autotag] has received a two-month suspension as a result of his second-round knockout loss to [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] in the main event of UFC 260.

MMA Junkie obtained the full list of medical suspensions from MixedMartialArts.com for UFC 260, which took place this past Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Miocic, 38, is among eight fighters to receive a medical suspension of 60 days or greater. Five fighters, [autotag]Gillian Robertson[/autotag], [autotag]Jamie Mullarkey[/autotag], [autotag]Fabio Cherant[/autotag], [autotag]Omar Morales[/autotag], and [autotag]Shane Young[/autotag], were handed 180-day suspensions as a result of their respective UFC 260 bouts.

Additionally, former UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Tyron Woodley[/autotag] faces 45 days away from competition. [autotag]Thomas Almeida[/autotag], who was knocked out by [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] on the pay-per-view main card, received a 60-day medical suspension.

With Khabib in corner, Abubakar Nurmagomedov earns dominant UFC 260 win

Abubakar Nurmagomedov picked up his first UFC victory against Jared Gooden.

With his brother Khabib Nurmagomedov in his corner, [autotag]Abubakar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] picked up his first UFC victory Saturday.

At UFC 260, Nurmagomedov (15-3-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) dominated a fellow promotional sophomore, [autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag], on the feet and on the ground en route to a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

UFC 260 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card streamed on ESPN+ pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

After some fouls in Round 1, Nurmagomedov and Gooden (17-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) each had their moments. It was a close round, but Nurmagomedov found slightly more success in the striking department. In Round 2, Nurmagomedov found success in the striking including one big punch on a clinch break that hurt Gooden.

Nurmagomedov found his takedown in Round 3 when he dragged Gooden to the canvas. From there, he remained in dominant top position. Gooden was unable to get up and the fight ended.

The fight wasn’t just Nurmagomedov’s first UFC win, it was his first in-cage appearance since November 2019, when he was submitted by David Zawada. Gooden has come up short in both UFC outings. Prior to UFC 260, Gooden lost a unanimous decision to Alan Jouban this past November.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Reebok’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $3,500 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,000; 6-10 bouts get $5,000; 11-15 bouts earn $10,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $15,000; and 21 bouts and more get $20,000. Additionally, champions earn $40,000 while title challengers get $30,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

Alan Jouban vs. Jared Gooden targeted for UFC 255 in November

A welterweight matchup between Alan Jouban and Jared Gooden is in the works for UFC 255.

A welterweight matchup is in the works for UFC 255.

The promotion is targeting [autotag]Alan Jouban[/autotag] (16-7 MMA, 7-5 UFC) vs. [autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at its upcoming pay-per-view event on Nov. 21. The event’s location and venue have yet to be announced.

MMA Junkie confirmed the booking with two people with knowledge of the matchup. The people requested anonymity because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Jouban hasn’t competed since suffering a split decision loss to Dwight Grant in April 2019. Prior to that, he picked up a “Fight of the Night” bonus when he knocked out Ben Saunders at UFC on FOX 28.

Jouban underwent knee surgery this past November, which has kept him sidelined. Despite the loss to Grant, Jouban recently signed a new five-fight deal with the UFC and will kick things off when he takes on newcomer Gooden.

Gooden was scheduled to make his UFC debut against Grant on Aug. 22, but was forced out due to injury. With Titan FC, Island Fights and LFA bouts on his resume, “Nite Train” has stopped his past three opponents.
