Badger Countdown: Wideout records 3(46) all-purpose yards in Rose Bowl

The 2023 CFB season is on the horizon and Luke Fickell and his Badgers are now 46 days away from their opener versus Buffalo on Sept. 2.

The 2023 college football season is on the horizon and Luke Fickell and his Badgers are now 46 days away from their opener versus Buffalo on Sept. 2. As we count down, former Wisconsin wide receiver Jared Abbrederis gives the number 46 a special meaning.

During his second season with the Badgers, Abbrederis became a household name in Madison and across the state of Wisconsin, recording 55 catches for 933 yards and eight scores over 14 games in 2011.

The final contest of the year is where he put on a show, compiling 346 all-purpose yards in the Badgers’ 45-38 loss to the Oregon Ducks in the 2012 Rose Bowl.

Abbrederis caught four passes for 119 yards and a touchdown, but his special-teams production was just as impressive. He returned a total of six kickoffs for 201 yards, including a 60-yarder, which good for an average of 25.1 yards per attempt. He also added 26 more yards on three punt returns.

At the time, the 346 yards were second only to Ron Dayne’s 347 he produced against Hawaii in 1996 and it currently stands as the third highest total in program history with Melvin Gordon’s 408-yard performance versus Nebraska (2014) on top.

Badger Countdown: WR records program-high 78 receptions in 2013

The Wisconsin football team is just 78 days away from taking the field Sept. 2 versus Buffalo in their 2023 season opener.

The Wisconsin football team is just 78 days away from taking the field Sept. 2 versus Buffalo in their 2023 season opener. With the Badgers looking to make a mark in the first year under new head coach Luke Fickell, wide receiver Jared Abbrederis did just that in 2013.

Entering his fourth and final season with the Badgers, Abbrederis was coming off of back-to-back productive campaigns in 2011 and 2012, but he’d set a record in 2013. He recorded a program-high 78 receptions on his way to 1,081 yards (fourth all-time) and seven touchdowns.

The Badgers went 9-3 in the regular season that year prior to losing to South Carolina 34-24 in the 2014 Capital One Bowl. Abbrederis, a senior, entered the 2014 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth round (176th overall) by the Green Bay Packers.

Although he didn’t last long in the league, the wide receiver’s career at Madison was one of the best in program history ranking tied for first with Brandon Williams in receptions (202), second in receiving yards (3,140) and tied for second with Tony Simmons in touchdown catches (23).

Earlier in this series, we looked at some of the best wide receivers and tight ends in Wisconsin program history in the Badger’s all-time leaders in receiving yards.

Many of these same legendary receivers are represented in the top 10 in career receiving touchdowns in Wisconsin program history including Lee Evans, Lee DeRamus and Jared Abbrederis.

Although this isn’t the most well-known tradition of Wisconsin, the Badgers have produced numerous receivers that have not only been successful in their time at Wisconsin but have gone on to play at the next level.

After releasing their All-Decade first team earlier this week, Big Ten Network released their second team yesterday and five Badgers made the cut.

Those players are running back Melvin Gordon, wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, offensive linemen Gabe Carimi and Kevin Zeitler and outside linebacker T.J. Watt.

This after Jonathan Taylor, Michael Deiter, J.J. Watt and Chris Borland were all on BTN’s All-Decade first team.

2010-2019 was a memorable decade for Badger football, and holding nine combined spots on the two All-Decade teams–good for second in the conference behind Ohio State’s 17–is an accurate representation of that success.

By the numbers: the best Wisconsin Badger to wear jersey No. 4

Today’s “by the numbers” focuses on former Badger wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, the best Wisconsin Badger to wear jersey No. 4.

Abbrederis came to Madison out of Wautoma High School in Wautoma, Wisconsin–a place where he played seemingly every position except for wide receiver.

The Wisconsin native started his high school career as a quarterback and received all-conference honors three of his four years as a starter. His junior and senior seasons, additionally, he played defensive back and received additional all-conference honors for his work in the defensive backfield.

His high school career finished with 3014 passing yards, one second-team all-conference honor as a quarterback, two first-team all-conference honors as both a quarterback and defensive back and the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association first-team all-state quarterback and conference offensive player of the year as a senior.

His high school production landed him in Madison in 2009 as a walk-on spread quarterback, but then-head coach Brett Bielema quickly realized his receiving potential and switched him to the position before his redshirt freshman season began in 2010.

Though his freshman production wasn’t much to be in awe about–the Wisconsin native finished the season with 13 games played, 20 receptions, 289 yards and three touchdowns–it was impressive production for a walk-on that hadn’t yet played the position.

It was then going into his sophomore season that Abbrederis made a massive jump–playing in 14 games and catching 55 passes for 933 yards and eight touchdowns.

Not much more needs to be said about Abbrederis’ junior seasons but his stats were as follows: 13 games, 49 catches, 837 yards and five touchdowns as a junior and 13 games, 78 catches, 1081 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior.

The former Badger finished his Wisconsin career with a school-record 202 receptions, the Burlsworth Trophy for the best student-athlete to begin their career as a walk-on and a then-Rose Bowl record 348 all-purpose yards (a record broken by current NFL running back Christian McCaffrey a few years later).

His college production was enough to get him drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

His professional career, though, was not nearly as productive as his time in Madison.

The former Badger played four years in the league–three for the Packers and one for the Detroit Lions–during which he recorded a total of 21 games played, 13 catches, 163 yards and zero touchdowns.

Nevertheless, his story going from a walk-on quarterback to becoming the school’s all-time leader in receptions is an inspiring one and makes him the best Wisconsin Badger to ever wear jersey No. 4.

Tune in tomorrow for jersey No. 5–the first quarterback on the list and one who lead the Badgers to arguably their best stretch of success of any four-year period (no, it isn’t yet four-star recruit Graham Mertz, as only time will tell what his legacy in Madison will be).

Wisconsin’s History with the Rose Bowl Game

The Badges were selected to play in the 106th Rose Bowl Game against Oregon a rematch of the 2012 Rose Bowl Game.

Wisconsin for the 10th time in program history will be heading to Pasadena to play in the “Granddaddy of them All” in the 106th Rose Bowl Game.

Wisconsin has appeared in a total of 15 bowl games and despite going 31 years between there Rose Bowl appearance from 1963 to 1994 this has been the most played bowl game by Wisconsin as the Badgers have posted a 3-6 record. With Wisconsin’s most recent appearance coming in 2013 when they lost to No. 6 Stanford 20-to-14.

Despite No. 8 Wisconsin losing there last three Rose Bowl games, the Badgers will get a rematch against their 2012 opponent in No. 6 Oregon on Jan. 1, 2020. Wisconsin and Oregon at the time put on one of the most thrilling games in Rose Bowl history as the Ducks won 45-38.

Considering, the two teams combined for 1,129 yards of total offense, which at the time ranked second for most yards gained in Rose Bowl history. Not to mention the 83 combined points were the most at the time but since than has been eclipsed by the 102 points scored between Oklahoma and Georgia in 2018 and the 101 points scored between USC and Penn State in 2017.

From an individual standpoint, former Badger wide receiver Jared Abbrederis had the most all-purpose yards in Rose Bowl history against Oregon with 346 (201 kickoff return yards, 119 receiving yards, 26 punt return yards) before his record was broken by Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey (368 total all-purpose yards) in 2016 against Iowa.

The same fireworks that were displayed in the Rose Bowl game in 2012 might not be on display to the same effect eight years later.

Considering, between Oregon and Wisconsin, the two teams have combined to average 892.5 yards of total offense. Oregon has averaged 35.9 points per game, which ranks 15th nationally while Wisconsin is averaging 34.6 points per game, which ranks 21st nationally.

Oregon has posted a 3-4 record in the Rose Bowl game as the Ducks have won their last two appearances winning in 2012 over Wisconsin and Oregon beat Florida State 59-20 in the 2015 Rose Bowl Game, which also served as a College Football Playoff semifinal game.

With Ohio State beating Washington in last year’s Rose Bowl Game 28-23 it snapped the Big Ten’s two game losing streak to Pac-12 opponents. The last time the Big Ten has won at least two consecutive Rose Bowl games was in 1999 and 2000, which also marked the last two victories by Wisconsin as the Badgers beat UCLA in 1999 and Stanford in 2000.

The win by Wisconsin in 2000 marked their third straight win in the Rose Bowl as the Badgers also beat UCLA in 1994 but the Badgers lost their three previous appearances in Pasadena. Wisconsin went three times in an 11-year span as they lost in 1953 to USC 7-0, lost in 1960 to Washington 44-8, and lost in a thriller in the 1963 Rose Bowl to USC 42-37.

The Badgers and Ducks will kickoff at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Day as the game can be seen on ESPN.
