Falcons met with S Jammie Robinson at combine, per report

The Atlanta Falcons met with Florida State safety Jammie Robinson at the scouting combine, per report

The Atlanta Falcons met with Florida State safety Jammie Robinson at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, according to a report from Justin Melo of the Draft Network. Robinson also had meetings with the Bills, Broncos, 49ers and Lions.

Robinson is a versatile defensive back with experience playing both in the box and as the deep safety. In 2022, he earned an 80.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, with a coverage grade of 78 and a run-defense grade of 80.1.

The Florida State standout is currently projected as a second- or third-round pick. Atlanta currently holds the 42nd pick in round two, and the 75th pick in round three of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Falcons currently have Richie Grant and Jaylinn Hawkins under contract through next season, but they lack depth at the safety and nickel corner positions, so it makes sense that they would be interested in Robinson.

Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez, a projected first-round pick, has yet to meet with the Falcons at the combine, but he praised wide receiver Drake London.

Gonzalez said London was his toughest individual matchup in college and that he studies Falcons CB A.J. Terrell, team reporter Tori McElhaney reported Thursday.

Gonzalez is one of several options for the Falcons in what is a pretty deep cornerback class.

All-22 from the scouting combine: Defensive backs detail their favorite plays

Christian Gonzalez, Clark Phillips III, Jaylon Jones, and Jammie Robinson detail their most notable college plays from the scouting combine.

INDIANAPOLIS — What’s your one defining moment?

Every prospect at the scouting combine has that one play which defines them to a degree — the highlight shot they think about over and over when it’s time to think about their collegiate careers.

As the defensive backs took the podiums in Indianapolis on Thursday, I thought it would be interesting to ask them which plays they thought best defined them as players. So, here’s Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez, Utah cornerback Clark Phillips III, Texas A&M cornerback Jaylon Jones, and Florida State safety Jammie Robinson on that very subject.

Florida State DB Jammie Robinson meets with the Lions, checks a lot of boxes for Detroit

The Lions met with versatile DB Jammie Robinson at the NFL Scouting Combine and he checks a lot of boxes for Dan Campbell’s team as a prospect

Florida State safety Jammie Robinson drew a large audience around his interview podium at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday morning. Several members of the Detroit media were in the crowd, myself included.

What we heard from Robinson sure sounded like a prospect the Lions would have some serious interest in come draft weekend. He’s an experienced fit in the role Will Harris played in Detroit in 2022–a slot/nickel safety capable of playing close to the line and in man coverage. Harris is a free agent and the Lions would need to replace him if he signs elsewhere.

One of the attributes Robinson highlighted was his nickel ability. He told reporters it’s his favorite spot to play, but was quick to note he can also play split safety, off-man coverage and even some outside cornerback if needed.

Interestingly, Robinson indicated that one NFL team compared him to Antoine Winfield Sr. in their combine interview with him. Winfield was a Pro Bowler despite being an undersized safety. Robinson measured in at just under 5-11 and 194 pounds at the Senior Bowl in February; Winfield was listed at 5-9 and 185.

Robinson indicated he’s already met with the Lions here at the combine. Detroit also met with the versatile DB at the Senior Bowl in Mobile last month. He is generally projected in the second or third rounds.

Hunting for the Browns’ next nickel at the NFL Scouting Combine

The Browns need a nickel cornerback, so I went hunting for one at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

The Cleveland Browns are going to look for a new nickel cornerback this offseason after third-year player Greg Newsome II stated he wants to stay outside this season after spending a year in the slot. They could certainly find a new one in free agency, but they could also turn their sights toward the 2023 NFL Draft. As corners and safeties spoke to the media today, I set out to find the Browns’ next nickel corner at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The catch to the nickel role in Cleveland, however, is that these guys have to tackle as they are on the field over 70 percent of the time. Undersized, but with an oversized chip on his shoulder, who could fill that role for the Browns?

While Jay Ward of LSU did not get a chance to talk to the media and is also a candidate for the role, I did get a chance to speak to Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, Jammie Robinson, and Kei’Trel Clark.

You can find day-one coverage of prospect interviews here.

NFL draft: 49ers met with DB prospect who could replace free agent FS Jimmie Ward

The 49ers met with an NFL draft prospect who might be able to replace Jimmie Ward if Ward leaves in free agency.

It would behoove the 49ers to re-sign free safety Jimmie Ward, who’s scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency when the league year opens March 15. They may not have much of a choice given what his market looks like and whether he has a desire to return to the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2014. If Ward does walk though, NFL draft prospect Jammie Robinson could be someone the 49ers target to replace their longest-tenured player.

The Draft Network’s Justin Melo reported Robinson spoke formally with the 49ers at the NFL combine. They were one of five teams that met with the Florida State product.

Robinson, listed at 5-11, 194 pounds, has similar versatility to Ward according to NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein. In his write-up on Robinson, Zierlein wrote Robinson projects as either a safety or a nickel corner in the NFL.

One of the things that makes Ward most valuable to San Francisco is his ability to play the free safety spot, while bringing the coverage skills necessary to slide into the slot on occasion. Last year he wound up playing nickel cornerback for the entire year after injuries at CB and the emergence of veteran FS Tashaun Gipson. While the 49ers may not necessarily target Robinson as a nickel corner, his versatility will surely matter for a team looking to fill Ward’s shoes.

Robinson was consistently productive during his four-year college career, which saw him split time with two years at South Carolina and two years at Florida State.

In 47 games he posted 318 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, seven interceptions and 16 pass breakups. He also notched a sack last year for the Seminoles — the first of his career.

The 49ers may aim to bring Ward back next season, but if they don’t, it’s hard to believe their meeting with Robinson at the combine will be their last.

15 2023 NFL Draft prospects for Browns to follow at the NFL Scouting Combine

Who should you be watching at the combine next week?

The Cleveland Browns have holes to fill on their roster as free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft rolls closer. However, before we get there, first comes the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, where general managers, head coaches, and agents are known for wheeling and dealing behind the scenes.

The combine also has massive NFL Draft implications for the Browns as they have needs at defensive tackle, defensive end, and wide receiver before we reach Week 1 of the season. Here are 15 players to keep a close eye on as they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for the biggest job interviews of their lives next week.

WR Quentin Johnston, S Jammie Robinson named draft fits for Giants

Pro Football Focus names WR Quentin Johnston and S Jammie Robinson as perfect 2023 NFL draft fits for the New York Giants.

As the New York Giants head into their second offseason under general manager Joe Schoen, their needs are clear.

They are thin at wide receiver, need several bodies along the interior offensive line, depth along the defensive line, a game-changing inside linebacker, and someone to pair with Adoree’ Jackson at cornerback.

Pro Football Focus took that into account when breaking down the best early- and late-round fits for all 32 teams in the 2023 NFL draft.

However, when it came to the Giants, PFF threw in a late-round curveball.

Early Pick: WR Quentin Johnston, TCU
Late Pick: S Jammie Robinson, Florida State

It’s no secret that wide receiver is a massive need for the Giants heading into the offseason. Johnston had a breakout 2022 campaign and could be a great option for them at the back end of the first round. As for Robinson, he might be more of an early-round pick on Day 2 than a late-rounder, but he’d be a perfect addition in that safety room after showing a ton of confident, aggressive play at the Senior Bowl.

At 6-foot-4 and 216 pounds, Johnston is precisely what the Giants need at wide receiver. Most mocks have them going with Zay Flowers but this might be a more ideal fit.

The addition of Robinson is a bit more curious. The Giants have needs at many positions but assuming they re-sign Julian Love, safety is not one of them. They also have Xavier McKinney and 2022 fourth-round pick Dane Belton at the position.
