Earlier this week, the New York Giants signed quarterback Davis Webb and punter Jamie Gillan to reserve/future contracts, deals that included unusual bonus payments on top.

Webb, who was a third-round selection of the Giants out of Cal in 2017, was inked to a one-year deal worth $1.035 million ($895K cap hit), while Gillan was signed to a one-year deal worth $895K.

After washing out with the Giants in his rookie season, Webb spent 2018 with the New York Jets before becoming the Buffalo Bills’ backup the past three seasons, hence the reason why the Giants brash this back.

Gillan was the Cleveland Browns punter from 2019-21 and spent last season on the Bills’ practice squad.

With Webb and Gillan signed, here’s a look at all reserve/futures deals the Giants have handed out thus far.

  • LB Omari Cobb
  • OT Devery Hamilton
  • LB Trent Harris
  • TE Jake Hausmann
  • DE Niko Lalos
  • QB Brian Lewerke
  • DT David Moa
  • WR Travis Toivonen
  • WR Alex Bachman
  • RB Antonio Williams
  • QB Davis Webb
  • P Jamie Gillan

The Giants signed QB Davis Webb and P Jamie Gillan to futures contracts.

The New York Giants signed quarterback Davis Webb and punter Jamie Gillan to reserve/futures contracts, the team announced Monday.

Webb, who was a third-round pick with the Giants during the 2017 NFL draft, returns to Big Blue with new head coach Brian Daboll. The Texas Tech product was waived before the regular season in 2018 and was the backup for the New York Jets for some of that campaign.

Webb also spent the last three seasons on the practice squad for the Buffalo Bills so he has some experience working with Daboll.

Gillan, who has been dubbed the “Scottish Hammer,” is a native of Inverness, Scotland. The 24-year-old punter spent roughly three seasons with the Cleveland Browns (2019-2021). He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2019.

Gillan also spent time on the practice squad with the Bills toward the end of the 2021 season.

Coach Kevin Stefanski and TE Austin Hooper among Browns returning from COVID-19

The Browns have kept everyone on pins and needles with their abundance of roster moves over the last few days. And the Browns remain quite busy on Wednesday.

In addition to the Greg Newsome II news — the rookie CB is back from concussion protocols but added to the reserve/COVID-19 list — the Browns announced that head coach Kevin Stefanski is back in the building after clearing the required COVID-19 protocols.

Coach Stefanski isn’t the only member of the Browns to return. Cleveland also activated TE Austin Hooper and LB Jacob Phillips from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Practice squad WR Jojo Natson has also cleared protocols and returns to the team.

The Browns also made the earlier reports official and waived punter Jamie Gillan, who was still on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Browns are waiving P Jamie Gillan

The Cleveland Browns are waiving P Jamie Gillan and rolling with veteran Dustin Colquitt for the rest of 2021

The Cleveland Browns are dropping the hammer on punter Jamie Gillan. As first reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Browns are waiving Gillan on Wednesday.

Gillan is currently on the Browns’ reserve/COVID-19 list and has missed the last two games. Replacement Dustin Colquitt has performed outstandingly in Gillan’s absence and will finish the season with the job.

The “Scottish Hammer” has had an uneven time in Cleveland since capturing the NFL all-rookie punter honors in 2019. He’s had some very good games but they’ve been pockmarked with some untimely poor punts. His entire body of work should earn Gillan another chance with a different team once he’s healthy.

Browns sign P Dustin Colquitt to the active roster with Jamie Gillan on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Browns sign P Dustin Colquitt to the active roster with Jamie Gillan on reserve/COVID-19 list

Faced with another COVID-related emergency, the Cleveland Browns have signed free agent punter Dustin Colquitt. The team made the move official on Friday morning, signing the veteran to a one-year contract.

Colquitt was released by the Atlanta Falcons earlier this week. He had been the Falcons punter for a few weeks. The 39-year-old is eighth all-time in punt attempts. He is the older brother of Britton Colquitt, who was the Browns punter from 2016-2018.

With Jamie Gillan going on the reserve/COVID-19 list this week, the Browns were in dire need of punting help. Gillan has not had a great third season in Cleveland; only three regular punters have a worse net average through Week 13. Colquitt’s average of 47.7 with Atlanta dwarfs Gillan’s 43.9, so this might not be just a COVID-19 replacement situation.

Anthony Walker, Jamie Gillan placed on COVID-19 list, unlikely to play Sunday

Two more starters placed on the COVID-19 list and unlikely to play Sunday. Who could replace them? Internal options for one but will have to go external for a punter:

The Cleveland Browns have two more issues to deal with going into their Week 14 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. The team announced that starting linebacker Anthony Walker and punter Jamie Gillan was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The two starters join tight end David Njoku on the list.

Going on the list on Thursday makes it highly unlikely that either Walker or Gillan will be available for Sunday whether they are vaccinated or not.

In place of Walker, the Browns may have some options. Malcolm Smith stepped in earlier this season while Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah could take on some of Walker’s role as well. Jacob Phillips was designated to return from injured reserve this week but is not certain to be activated in time for the game.

The team does not have another punter on their team and would have to sign a free agent to fill that role.

At 6-6, Cleveland can’t afford to lose in Week 13 in a division game. The loss of Walker and Gillan, with Njoku likely out as well, depletes the roster and makes things difficult with only a couple of days left to prepare.

We will keep you up to date with roster moves to replace Walker and Gillan as soon as they are made.

Browns give punter J.K. Scott a tryout

Jamie Gillan might be punting for his job as the Browns have PFF’s fourth-best punter from 2020 and the punter tied for the most hang time last year in for a workout:

The Cleveland Browns are seemingly always making transactions to their roster. Saturday, they made a number of moves including signing offensive lineman Alex Taylor to their roster and elevating two from the practice squad for Week 6’s game.

With punter Jamie Gillan struggling much of the 2021 season, after a down 2020 season due to injury, the Browns may be looking for a replacement. Officially, the Browns worked out J.K. Scott for the punter position on Saturday.

Scott is the former Green Bay Packers punter that was drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. The former Alabama Crimson Tide specialist stands 6’6″ and has been looking for a home since the Packers waived him prior to this season.

For his career, Scott has struggled with distance and net punting (punt yards minus return yardage including touchbacks):

Among players with at least 100 punts, Scott’s average ranks 28th in the NFL since he entered the league.

Scott’s net average during his career is 39.20 yards per punt after he dipped to a net of 37.8 in the 2020 season.

Interestingly enough, Pro Football Focus graded Scott with a 77.9 grade last year which was good for the fourth-best punter in the NFL. According to PFF, Scott was tied for first with a hangtime of 4.57 in 2020.

It seems likely that Gillan is punting for his job in Week 6. A poor performance could see Scott added to the roster quickly. A good performance could stave off the competition unless Scott was overly impressive during the workout.

Data graph shows Jamie Gillan’s struggles this year

Punter Jamie Gillan has struggled. A new data graph, plus PFF’s grade, put those struggles into context:

The Cleveland Browns have some issues to get figured out. Injuries are the primary concern at this point with many starters missing or leaving Sunday’s Week 5 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Being down to your fourth and fifth corners, your fourth and fifth offensive tackles and your third and fourth defensive ends could be a problem for any team. Hopefully all the test results come back in a good way for the team and players like Greg Newsome II, Jarvis Landry, Jedrick Wills and others can return sooner than later.

Another problem that may need to be addressed sooner than later is punter Jamie Gillan. Gillan’s gaff in Week 1 was costly for the team but his overall punting this season has left a lot on the field. He continues to struggle to get distance on punts that need it while struggling to land punts softly to allow them to be downed on the shorter ones.

We detailed Gillan’s struggles following the game.

A new data graph, which looks at EPA (Expected Points Added) for punters, shows how poor Gillan is punting compared to the rest of the league:

Pro Football Focus also has Gillan graded low, 26th punter in the NFL, through five games.

It will be interesting to see if Andrew Berry brings in punters to workout for the team this week in an attempt to replace Gillan after over a year of poor production from the position.

4 takeaways from the Browns vs. Vikings game film

What our Jeff Risdon picked up from rewatching the Browns Week 4 win over the Vikings

The Cleveland Browns improved to 3-1 on the season with a 14-7 win in Minnesota in Week 3. Cleveland’s third straight win was not an easy one, but the Browns prevailed thanks to a great defensive performance and another outstanding effort from the RB duo of Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb.

I went back and reviewed the game, watching both the broadcast feed and the All-22 angle film. Here’s what I picked up from rewatching the close win over the Vikings.

Look: Jamie Gillan celebrates ‘sun’s out, guns out’

Browns punter Jamie Gillan celebrates summer showing off his impressive physique in a grilling version of ‘sun’s out, guns out’

The holiday weekend sun is out, and that means grilling with the “guns out” for Browns punter Jamie Gillan. And the Scottish Hammer has a pretty darn impressive arsenal.

Gillan posted a picture on his Instagram story on Saturday showing off his rocked-up physique in front of a grill. Wearing just an NFL-branded apron and sandals, Gillan does not look like the stereotypical punter.

Gillan is a proud fitness buff. He’s shown off the impressive muscles in the past, but this is taking it to a whole new level. Perhaps one that teammate and fellow physical freak Myles Garrett can appreciate…
