Gators linebacker at SEC media days names 4 teammates to watch

Shemar James thinks everyone needs to keep an eye on these four fellow defensive players in 2024.

SEC media days have come and gone, and the past week has offered many delicious morsels to help tide the nation’s appetite until the start of the college football season at the end of August.

One story of interest for fans of the Florida Gators comes from junior linebacker [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag], who was one of three players along with head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] to represent the Orange and Blue in Dallas, Texas.

He had some encouraging words about his team’s secondary this fall, naming four members of the secondary when asked if there are any defenders on his side of the ball that people do not know about yet.

“[autotag]Gregory Smith[/autotag], a freshman that came in, [autotag]Jameer Grimsley[/autotag], another freshman,” James offered first.

“[autotag]DJ Douglas[/autotag]…” he followed. “Got [autotag]Trikweze Bridges[/autotag], a transfer from Oregon. Those are some names that we have in the household right now that I believe are going to make a big splash this year.”

Gators four who will ‘make a big splash’

Smith was a four-star recruit and ranked No. 319 overall and No. 13 at the athlete position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at No. 262 overall and 19 at safety nationally in the 2024 cycle.

Grimsley was a top-100 transfer after enrolling early with the Alabama Crimson Tide but departed after the retirement of Nick Saban.

Douglas finished the 2023 campaign at Tulane with 54 tackles (39 solo), three interceptions, two pass breakups and a tackle-for-loss over 13 games with 12 starts at safety.

Bridges played cornerback and nickel at Oregon but switched to safety by coming to Gainesville. His peak came in 2022 when he started all 13 games, amassing 49 tackles (including a tackle for a loss), three interceptions and a forced fumble at cornerback that season.

Former Alabama CB Jameer Grimsley commits to Florida

Former Alabama CB Jameer Grimsley commits to Florida

Former Alabama cornerback, Jameer Grimsley, has committed to Florida after recently entering the transfer portal.

Grimsley heads to Gainesville to play for Bill Napier and the Gators, which keeps him in the SEC. He was originally recruited by Florida and had an opportunity to return to his home state when Alabama head coach Nick Saban retired.

He wasn’t the only early signee to hit the portal, as top 2024 quarterback Julian Sayin entered the portal and committed to Ohio State.

While this somewhat hurts Alabama, the damage is not immediate. Grimsley was a talented four-star recruit who provided depth for 2024 and a chance at starting in a few seasons.

Gators land Alabama cornerback signee from transfer portal

Cornerback Jameer Grimsley decided that Alabama wasn’t right for him without Nick Saban, and now he’s headed to Gainesville to join the Florida Gators.

When former Alabama head coach Nick Saban retired, class of 2024 signee and cornerback [autotag]Jameer Grimsley[/autotag] decided that Tuscaloosa wasn’t right for him and hit the transfer portal.

Florida and LSU immediately jumped back into the recruiting race, but Grimsley landed on the Gators Sunday after taking just three days to think things over. Hayes Fawcett of On3 broke the news first.

“There’s no place like home,” Grimsley said to On3. “I dreamed about this since I was a jit. I feel like it was God’s plan that everything happened the way it did. What better feeling than to bring a natty back to your home state?”

Grimsley signed with Alabama as a consensus fours-tar recruit, ranked the highest by On3 at No. 100 overall in the class of 2024. The On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major services, puts him at No.157 nationally and No. 22 among cornerbacks in the class.

Florida’s secondary didn’t perform to expectations last year and defensive backs coach Corey Raymond was fired as a result. Raymond was the Florida coach that Grimsley knew the best, but his replacement, former Los Angeles Charges assistant Will Harris, connected with him after taking over in Gainesville.

Gimsley will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Top 100 2024 recruit expressing interest in LSU

LSU could make a push for Alabama transfer Jameer Grimsley.

The ripple effect of former Alabama coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] continued on Thursday with 2024 Alabama signee [autotag]Jameer Grimsley[/autotag] entering the portal.

According to On3, Grimsley was a top-100 recruit in the 2024 class and the 15th-best cornerback. He’s a consensus four-star with all major recruiting services ranking Grimsley as a top 300 recruit.

Grimsley told On3’s Hayes Fawcett that LSU will be in consideration. It makes sense given LSU just hired [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag], who recruited Grimsley when Raymond was working at Florida.

Corner remains a position of need for LSU and there could be immediate playing time for Grimsley under a completely new look defensive staff.

While technically a transfer, Grimsley would be a true freshman in 2024 and one of the top-rated players in LSU’s 2024 class.

LSU is looking for a strong finish this cycle after flipping [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag] on New Year’s Eve while still pushing to flip five-star athlete [autotag]Terry Bussey[/autotag].

Adding Bussey and Grimslee would be a big boost for the LSU secondary.

Incoming freshman DB Jameer Grimsley enters the transfer portal

Alabama loses another DB to the transfer portal

New Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer has lost another defensive back to the NCAA transfer portal. This time it’s incoming freshman four-star Jameer Grimsley who has decided to move on before ever suiting up for the Crimson Tide.

Grimsley becomes the eighth defensive back from Alabama to enter the transfer portal this offseason joining Caleb Downs, Trey Amos, Kristian Story, Earl Little, Dezz Ricks, Jake Pope, and Antonio Kite.

Losing Grimsley is not ideal but the Tide still has a ton of talent in the backend of the defense heading into 2024 with time to make more additions ahead of signing day or in the summer transfer portal window.

Alabama 2024 football signee enters transfer portal

Alabama 2024 football signee enters transfer portal

The first member of Alabama’s 2024 recruiting class officially entered the transfer portal Thursday afternoon according to reports, as Jameer Grimsley has announced his intentions to search for new opportunities in 2024.

An incoming freshman who enrolled at Alabama earlier this month, Grimsley is the latest Crimson Tide player to enter the transfer portal after former head coach Nick Saban announced his retirement, as well as the first member of the 2024 class. Grimsley is also

Grimsley came to Alabama rated as a four-star athlete in the 2024 class out of Tampa Catholic High School in Florida. According to the 247Sports Composite, Grimsley was also considered the No. 189 overall player in the 2024 class, as well as the No. 24 player in the state of Florida.

At 6-foot-3, Grimsley saw time on both sides of the ball in high school but was likely set to play cornerback with the Crimson Tide. Grimsley will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Blue-chip Alabama DB commit talks Florida’s new coach after official visit

According to this blue-chip 2024 recruit, the Gators got a good one in new hire Will Harris.

Florida’s football program recently replaced outgoing defensive secondary coach Corey Raymond with former Los Angeles Chargers assistant secondary coach [autotag]Will Harris[/autotag] on Sunday. So far, it looks like the new member of the Orange and Blue has not slowed things down.

This past weekend, four-star Alabama Crimson Tide cornerback commit [autotag]Jameer Grimsley[/autotag] out of Tampa (Florida) Catholic made a stop in Gainesville. The 6-foot-3-inch, 185-pound defensive back shared thoughts on his official visit with the Gators.

“I liked it,” Grimsley told Swamp247. “Good experience. Got to hang out with the players, experience school of the University of Florida and how things run up here, hang out more with the coaches.”

As far as the new hire, Grimsley appears to be warming up to the idea of Harris running things on D.

“Looking forward, they just got a new DB coach, Will Harris. They just hired him. Have to meet with him. We’ll see how things go from there. Meeting with the players, the defensive coordinator. I was hanging out with him a lot. When the DC wants you, that is good. He has a final say on defense.”

However, there is still a lot to learn about the new hire before spending face time with him.

“They were telling me he played for Pete Carroll. He was coaching in the NFL, so he must know a little something. I don’t really know too much about him. That is why I am looking forward to meeting with him.”

Napier and Co. have been in pursuit of Grimsley’s talents this fall, pushing hard back in October while making another strong stab for the blue-chip defender in November. The former coach made significant inroads with the high school senior before his departure, which Florida is still benefitting from.

“Although Coach Raymond was recruiting me, but they had offered me first as a receiver, so it wasn’t him that was necessarily recruiting me the whole time at the end of the day. Coach Napier was really the one.

“Obviously, C-Ray wanted me there, but he was the one who offers the kids. He makes all the offers. They can’t offer anyone else he verifies it with them. Everyone else one the staff wanted me he, it was just Coach Raymond, even though he was recruiting me.

“That kind of made me feel a little more comfortable about the situation. There are schools that have the position coach, and they are the one that lets them handle everything. I know the staff was involved in recruiting me here.”

Grimsely is ranked No. 166 overall and No. 17 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 169 and 22, respectively.

Gators making a final push for 4-star Alabama CB commit

Four-star Alabama cornerback commit Jameer Grimsley was in town for the FSU game and plans to return for an official visit before the signing period.

With the early signing period just weeks away, Florida’s recruiting staff is making a final push to add a few more elite names to the Gators’ 2024 class.

One of those names is consensus four-star cornerback and Alabama commit Jameer Grimsley. The Gators hosted him on an unofficial visit this weekend for the Florida State game and expect him to return for an official on Dec. 8, according to Swamp247’s Donovan Keiser.

Florida fought until the end against FSU but ultimately came away with a loss.

“I was just a little disappointed,” Grimsley said. “I thought they could win this game since Jordan Travis was hurt. They were winning in the first half but couldn’t put up points in the second half. Just a tough loss.”

Florida still pushing to flip recruits as 2024 cycle winds down

Florida is still pushing to flip some big-time recruits from the class of 2024, but reversing a commitment is no easy task.

Florida’s incoming recruiting class is already ranked No. 3 in the nation, but the Gators don’t stop until the national letters of intent are signed. Billy Napier and his recruiting staff are still in hot pursuit of the best talent in the country, even if those players are committed elsewhere.

The first name that jumps out is the nation’s top overall recruit, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who will move from South Florida to Columbus, Ohio. But it was four-star Alabama defensive back commit Jameer Grimsley who was in Jacksonville this weekend for the Florida-Georgia game.

Grimsley wasn’t particularly impressed with the Gators in the three-score loss, according to Swamp247’s Blake Alderman, but he should be he should see a much better product in Gainesville next week when he attends the Arkansas game.

“It was surprising with their win over Tennessee, and they are doing a lot better than I expected, but I wanted to see more from them today,” Grimsely said. “I really did have faith in them that they could beat this team, but we will see how the rest of the season goes.”

The Gators left tickets for four-star Texas running back commit Jerrick  Gibson at the game, but he didn’t end up making it to the game. His schedule was tight this weekend, but there’s a chance he will return for another game. Florida is still hanging around in this race, but it feels like Gibson is slipping further away from the Gators.

Florida still pushing for this 4-star CB committed to Alabama

Four-star cornerback Jameer Grimsley is committed to Alabama, but the Gators are still pushing to flip him before December.

Florida’s recruiting class of 2024 is already ranked the third-best in the country, but the Gators are still pushing to add the final touches to the group before the early signing period starts in December.

One of Florida’s targets is Tampa Catholic cornerback [autotag]Jameer Grimsley[/autotag], who committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide back in July. The Gators are still pursuing him, though, and he’ll have at least two chances to see the team in action before the signing period, according to Blake Alderman of 247Sports.

Grimsley plans to be in attendance for both the Georgia and Arkansas games. While he won’t be able to interact with the staff at the neutral site game against the Bulldogs this weekend, he’ll get time with coaches during Week 10.

“I just want to get around everyone again,” Grimsley said. “Spend some time with the coaches, see the game, and watch the team play. I said I would keep watching them this season, but haven’t checked them out in person yet. They have wanted me to do that, so I am going to go up there.”

Florida coaches stopped by Grimsley’s school over the bye week. Secondary coach Corey Raymond is in charge of all of Florida’s defensive backs, so it only makes sense that he’s taken the lead on this effort. He’s kept communication lines open with Grimsley all year and isn’t slowing down because of a verbal commitment.

“I was thankful they came by to see me last week even though I have been hurt,” he said. “They dropped by last week and saw me doing some treatment and hung out for a while when we had practice. Feels good to know they are still going to go after me and make me a guy they want even though I am committed to Bama.”

Because Florida didn’t host Grimsley on an official visit over the summer, there’s still a chance to pull out all the stops right before the signing period. Schedules are tight, though, and a December official visit is cutting it close. Still, it might be worth all of the effort for this caliber of defensive back.

Grimsley is a consensus four-star recruit, ranked highest by On3 at No. 80 overall. The other three major recruiting services have him outside of the top 200, though. As a result, he drops to No. 174 overall on the On3 industry ranking.
