LSU officially announces Jimmy Lindsey as new defensive line coach

Lindsey spent the last two seasons in the same role at South Carolina.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] officially added the final member of his on-field staff on Monday as [autotag]Jimmy Lindsey[/autotag] takes over as defensive line coach after holding the same role at South Carolina for the last two seasons.

His hiring was reported late last week, and LSU officially announced the addition on Monday. He’ll replace [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag], who left earlier this offseason to take a role on the Denver Broncos coaching staff.

Lindsey coached a number of talented defensive linemen with the Gamecocks, namely Zacch Pickens, who was taken by the Chicago Bears in the third round of last weekend’s 2023 NFL draft. Before joining Shane Beamer’s staff, he spent one season as the defensive ends coach at Illinois following a three-season stint at Western Kentucky.

He has spent more than two decades as an assistant coach at the college level making stops at several programs, including multiple stints at his alma mater, Chattanooga.

Report: LSU close to hiring defensive line coach from SEC foe

The Tigers are reportedly targeting Jimmy Lindsey, who has been South Carolina’s defensive line coach since 2021, for the vacancy left by Jamar Cain.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] seems to be close to completing the Tigers’ on-field coaching staff entering the 2023 season.

LSU is reportedly targeting South Carolina defensive line coach [autotag]Jimmy Lindsey[/autotag] to fill the vacant position on staff left by [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag], who left for a role with the Denver Broncos, according to Football Scoop. Per the report, a deal could be finalized as soon as this weekend.

Defensive analyst [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag], who returned to Baton Rouge this offseason, filled in coaching the defensive line group during spring practice.

Lindsey spent the last two seasons in Columbia as the Gamecocks’ defensive line coach. Before that, he was the defensive ends coach at Illinois in 2020 and later served as the interim defensive coordinator for the season finale after then-coach Lovie Smith was fired.

Prior to his stint with the Illini, Lindsey made stops as an assistant at Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Furman, UT-Martin, Miami (Ohio) and Gardner-Webb, as well as multiple stints at his alma mater, Chattanooga.

Brian Kelly breaks down LSU’s defensive line depth in 2023

Here’s how the depth is shaping up on the defensive line as spring comes to a close.

With [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag] and [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] getting back to the practice field, LSU’s defensive line is looking healthier.

However, don’t expect to see them out there on Saturday.

“It’s just not something that is worth the risk,” Kelly said when discussing potentially playing Smith, who is coming off a torn ACL, in the spring game.

With LSU thin all spring on the defensive line, several players got more reps this spring. Kelly believes that’s helped LSU improves its depth. On four-star freshman [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag], Kelly said he benefited from extra work that wouldn’t have been there if LSU was fully healthy.

On the interior, [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] also impressed Kelly, getting plenty of reps at several spots up front. [autotag]Paris Shand[/autotag], the Arizona transfer with a chance to take over for [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag], has also made strides.

“You could see his progress and his grit kind of grow throughout the spring to the point where we were like, that was a really good spring for him,” Kelly said.

Kelly also cited [autotag]Tygee Hill[/autotag] and [autotag]Fitzgerald West[/autotag] as two guys who benefitted from the available work.

The main takeaway: Kelly likes the depth LSU has up front.

Smith and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] are surefire starters up the middle, but it’s wide open outside of that.

It’s also worth noting this group has been working under interim defensive line coach [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] as LSU looks to replace [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag].

Broncos’ new pass rush specialist Jamar Cain coached Nik Bonitto in college

Nik Bonitto totaled 16 sacks in two seasons playing under Jamar Cain at Oklahoma. Cain will now serve as the Broncos’ pass rush coach.

The Denver Broncos have a new assistant coach, Jamar Cain, who will serve as a pass rush specialist under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph this season.

Cain, 42, joins the Broncos with 20 years of experience at the college and high school levels. He most recently served as LSU’s defensive line coach in 2022. Before that, Cain coached Oklahoma’s outside linebackers and defensive ends from 2020-2021.

While coaching with the Sooners, Cain overlapped with pass rusher Nik Bonitto, who totaled 26.5 tackles for losses, 16 sacks, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble in 21 games.

After a productive stint at Oklahoma, Bonitto was selected by Denver in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. His college production did not immediately translate to the NFL as Bonitto was limited to just one tackle behind the line and 1.5 sacks in 15 games as a rookie.

Now reunited with Cain, perhaps Bonitto will be able to take a step forward in the second year of his pro career.

Before coaching at LSU and Oklahoma, Cain previously worked for eight other college football programs and served internships with the Cardinals (2008), Chiefs (2009) and Raiders (2010). He will now take on his first full-time job in the NFL.

Brian Kelly says LSU will be patient in hiring next defensive line coach

Here’s when LSU could be hiring Jamar Cain’s replacement..

After [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] took an NFL job, LSU is without a defensive line coach.

Gerald Chatman, a defensive analyst, is filling in throughout the spring. It looks like Chatman will stay in that role in the meantime with Brian Kelly saying LSU doesn’t expect to hire Cain’s replacement until spring practice concludes.

Kelly added that Chatman is getting a chance at the job and said LSU is going to evaluate all of its options in and out of house.

“This is a position its important where we examine all options.”

“Coach Chatman as you know is a well-credentialed, experienced defensive line coach,” Kelly added.

Chatman is working with the guys on the interior while [autotag]John Jancek[/autotag] handles duties with the outside linebackers.

“We wanna get through the spring and go from there.”

That doesn’t come as a surprise. With Chatman and Jancek, LSU’s defensive line is in a good spot and Kelly has no reason to rush. When spring ends, LSU will be able to step back and see what the best move forward is.

Jacobian Guillory opens up about Jamar Cain’s exit

Guillory offered high praise for Cain on his way out to join the Broncos staff.

[autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] took a job on Sean Peyton’s staff with the Denver Broncos, leaving LSU looking for a defensive line coach.

Cain only spent a year at LSU, but he did a lot of good work in that time, both developing and recruiting. It’s a big loss, and [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] will have to make a good hire to find an adequate replacement.

One of the toughest aspects of this sport is seeing how coaching departures affect the players. [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] talked about Cain’s exit, offering a bittersweet tone.

“I have nothing but love for coach Cain,” Guillory said. “To see him go, it does hurt. I cried after practice.”

Guillory went on to speak about how this was Cain’s goal — getting an NFL job. Guillory said he’s happy to see Cain getting this opportunity and wishes him the best.

Guillory praised the work Cain did with himself and fellow defensive tackle [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag].

Guillory originally committed to [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] at LSU. When he took his official visit in June of 2019, [autotag]Dennis Johnson[/autotag] was the defensive line coach. Including Johnson, Guillory has seen LSU go through four defensive line coaches in that span and will soon see a fifth.

Guillory is part of a defensive tackle group that could be one of the nation’s best in 2023. Whoever takes over that room, whether it’s [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] or an out-of-house option, plenty of talent will be waiting.

11 potential candidates to be LSU’s next defensive line coach

Who could the Tigers turn to in order to replace Jamar Cain?

With defensive line coach [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] taking a job with the Denver Broncos, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has an opening on his staff.

It’s the middle of spring practice, and LSU has the support staff to work in the interim. So, a new hire might not be imminent.

We’re taking a look at who Kelly could turn to when the new hire is made. Predicting coaching searches can be tough due to all that goes into it — especially with a position coach.

Head coaches value different traits from each member of their staff. In Cain, LSU lost a guy who could recruit Louisiana and nationally. One would think Kelly will look for someone with similar recruiting prowess.

So let’s jump right in.

BREAKING: LSU on-field assistant joining Denver Broncos coaching staff

Tigers defensive line coach Jamar Cain is joining Sean Payton’s staff in the same role, per On3’s Matt Zenitz.

LSU defensive line coach [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] is heading to the NFL after one season in Baton Rouge.

Cain has been hired by the Denver Broncos to serve in the same role on new coach Sean Payton’s staff, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. Cain, who also serves as LSU’s defensive run game coordinator, joined the Tigers last offseason after two years as an assistant at Oklahoma.

He led one of LSU’s best position groups this past fall, overseeing the emergence of edge rusher [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] and the elevation of [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] to a starting role after [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] was lost for the season on a torn ACL in Week 1.

Cain is also one of the top recruiters on the staff and was the primary contact for players like five-star 2023 signee [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag]. His departure is a major loss and the first real shakeup to the on-field staff we’ve seen this offseason, aside from special teams coordinator [autotag]Brian Polian[/autotag] moving to an off-field role.

Update: The Broncos officially announced Cain’s hiring later on Saturday. He will take on the title of “pass-rush specialist.”

LSU State of the Program: Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo anchor defensive line

Two stars on the interior will hold down LSU’s DL in 2023.

LSU’s spring practice begins on Thursday.

It’s the first real public step on the march to the 2023 kickoff against Florida State. It’s Year 2 under coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], and like last year, plenty of eyes are on Baton Rouge.

LSU’s expected to begin the year as a top 10 team and one of the reasons is a strong defensive line. We continue our state of the program series, looking at that defensive line that’s led by a couple of big names on the interior: [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag]. LSU’s also added several transfers with a couple of key blue-chip recruits.

Let’s jump right in.
