Dolphins sign DB Jamal Perry to the practice squad

A familiar face returns to South Florida.

The Miami Dolphins have had a number of injuries to their secondary, so they’re looking at options that could help make life a bit easier.

According to NFL agent David Canter, the Dolphins are signing defensive back Jamal Perry to their practice squad. Perry should be a familiar face for fans of the aqua and orange, as he spent parts of the last three seasons with Miami.

That time, and his time with New England in the past, should make it easier for him to pick right back up from where he left off.

In 2021, he played four games for the Dolphins before suffering a knee injury against the New York Jets that caused him to miss the rest of the season on injured reserve.

Brian Flores says DB Jamal Perry’s knee injury is season-ending

He played just five snaps before getting hurt against the Jets.

Just a few days after being signed from the practice squad, defensive back Jamal Perry played five snaps against the Jets before suffering a knee injury that resulted in him being carted off the field.

Perry was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, meaning he would miss at least three games, however, Brian Flores announced on Wednesday that the former Cyclone would miss the rest of the season. The coach sounded upset about the injury and expressed sadness for his player.

“Unfortunately, Jamal, that’s gonna be season-ending,” Flores said. “You hate when that happens. He’s been a significant contributor to this team for three years. He’s been on the active, this year he’s on the practice squad, he was back active this past weekend, and unfortunately, that’ll be season-ending.”

Perry’s season-ending injury comes just weeks after veteran defensive back Jason McCourty suffered an injury that knocked him out for the rest of the year as well.

The 27-year-old will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Dolphins sign a safety, place two defenders on injured reserve

Miami is signing Will Parks from the 49ers’ practice squad.

During Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins lost two players to injuries that knocked them out for the game.

Linebacker Brennan Scarlett suffered a knee injury in the first half, and cornerback Jamal Perry was carted off with a knee in the second half. The team announced Tuesday that both players would be placed on injured reserve, forcing them to miss at least three games.

Scarlett, in his first year with Miami, has been in a rotational role to this point, playing 21% of the snaps. However, he’s played significant time on special teams.

Perry was signed to the active roster last week from the team’s practice squad and was likely going to be a depth option for the team. He had played just five snaps Sunday before suffering his injury.

These moves opened up two holes on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster. One of those holes is being filled by safety Will Parks, who Miami signed Tuesday off of San Francisco’s practice squad.

This is Parks’ sixth year in the league after being drafted the sixth round of the 2016 draft. Parks spent his first four years with the Broncos, before splitting his fifth season between Denver and Philadelphia. In 2020, he played 75% of the defensive snaps for the Broncos.

With Perry out at least three weeks, and Jason McCourty not coming back anytime soon, it makes sense that the Dolphins add some veteran depth. If they lose any of their top three safeties, Parks could be plugged in with some confidence.

Dolphins sign Jamal Perry to active roster, signed two to practice squad

LB Kobe Jones and QB Jake Luton joined the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins made three moves on Wednesday to improve their roster ahead of their Week 11 battle with the New York Jets.

Miami announced they signed defensive back Jamal Perry to their active roster from their practice squad and signed linebacker Kobe Jones and quarterback Jake Luton to fill in open spots left on the practice squad.

Perry has been in the league since 2017 when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent 2017 and 2018 on and off the New England Patriots practice squad before signing with Miami in 2019. Over the last three years, Perry has played in 30 games, starting seven of them.

This signing could be due to Brian Flores’ announcement that Jason McCourty is done for the season. If not, it’s just more depth at a position that every team needs, and he’s familiar with the system.

Jones is an edge rusher from Mississippi State that signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent this summer but didn’t make it to the regular season. During his four years as a Bulldog, Jones totaled just seven sacks.

Luton was a sixth-round pick out of Oregon State by the Jaguars in 2020. He started three games for Jacksonville last season due to a Gardner Minshew injury where he threw for 624 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 54.5 passer rating. The 25-year-old signed with the Seahawks in September of 2021 and bounced to and from the practice squad.

With Tua Tagovailoa and Jacoby Brissett both dealing with injuries it’s probably good to have an extra arm at practice. Luton joins Jake Dolegala as the practice squad quarterbacks in Miami.

Miami Dolphins place DB Jamal Perry on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Miami Dolphins have yet another brush with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Miami entered this week with one player, RB Matt Breida, on the reserve/COVID-19 list — but now the team is adding another. As cases of the virus slowly begin to rise across the league, the Dolphins should likely expect more reminders of the ongoing pandemic in the coming weeks. Defensive back Jamal Perry is the latest Dolphin player to be placed on the list, which the team announced yesterday afternoon.

Perry’s presumed unavailability is going to provide more of an impact to the Dolphins’ special teams units this weekend than it will the defense. Perry has logged just 15 defensive snaps since Miami’s Week 7 bye. But the team will still look to be prepared to take his absence in stride.

The Dolphins’ corresponding roster move for this transaction is to elevate safety Nate Holley to the active roster from the practice squad, helping fortify the Dolphins’ depth in the secondary amid some of the other bumps and bruises as the team braces to face one of the NFL’s best offenses in the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. That will be no short order and the Dolphins will need to be ready with as many bodies as possible; which means Holley will get his chance to secure some action, especially on the special teams units.

Getting this decision made early in the week should give the Dolphins the best possible chance to ensure that they can avoid some of the communication mishaps that come from time to time with player roles on the special teams squads changing and evolving from week to week. Miami certainly can’t afford mental miscues in a game like the one they’re in for against Kansas City this weekend.

Miami Dolphins defensive back changes name

Miami Dolphins defensive back changes name

The Miami Dolphins have had a busy week — they’ve been adding new names to their 2020 offseason roster in an effort to build up the talent levels in South Florida. The obvious hope is that with new waves of free agents and draft selections, the Dolphins can quickly transition from a rebuilding upstart to a fiery young competitor. But the new names aren’t just coming from new faces these days, either.

Miami Dolphins defensive back Jomal Wiltz has officially changed his name — he’s now going by Jamal Perry.

Perry, who is entering his second season with the Miami Dolphins in 2020, played in 14 games last season. He logged 55 total tackles, one interception and six passes defensed while showing some bright flashes as a sub-package defensive back. A former undrafted free agent out of Iowa State, Perry has bounced around from the Philadelphia Eagles (2017) to the New England Patriots (2017-2018) before ultimately landing with the Dolphins and finding the field for the first time for live action.

Quite frankly, we shouldn’t care what he’s calling himself. The man formerly known as Jomal Wiltz has offered some promise of being a good football player in the NFL. Here’s hoping Jamal Perry can help formally see that potential through.
