Parker Washington ’embracing the opportunities’ after IR stint

The Jaguars elevated Parker Washington to the active roster Saturday and he’s ready for a second chance to make a first impression.

Parker Washington is back on the active roster after getting elevated from the injured reserve by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

The sixth-round rookie receiver made his NFL debut back in Week 4 when return specialist Jamal Agnew was out of action due to an injury. It didn’t last long for Washington, though. He played only two snaps before suffering a knee injury on his first career punt return.

Now, seven weeks later, Washington is off the I.R. and ready to step back into the lineup as the Jaguars’ starting returner while Agnew recovers from a shoulder injury.

“I feel like it’s perfect timing right now,” Washington said after a practice earlier this week. “I’ve been tackling that rehab and everything, treatment has been going really well, it’s been exciting. I’ve just been attacking that process, it feels like perfect timing.

“Just get in where you fit in. I’m just embracing the opportunities they give me, whether that’s punt return, no offense all game, I’m good, or some offensive reps. I’m ready to work and help the team win.”

Washington had 20 career punt returns during his time at Penn State and took them for a combined 122 yards. On his only career NFL return, he took a punt back five yards against the Atlanta Falcons.

To make room for the addition of Washington, the Jaguars played Agnew on the injured reserve.

Tyson Campbell out, Zay Jones questionable vs. Titans

The Jaguars ruled out two and listed four players, including Zay Jones, as questionable.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled out return specialist Jamal Agnew and cornerback Tyson Campbell for a Week 11 contest against the Tennessee Titans and listed another four players as questionable.

The statuses of wide receiver Zay Jones, offensive tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, and wide receiver Parker Washington are all up in the air.

Jones, who has been in the headlines this week after his Monday arrest, has been out of action since re-injuring his knee in Week 5.

With Campbell out of action, the Jaguars will turn to second-year cornerbacks Montaric Brown and Gregory Junior to fill the void. The absence of Agnew will likely mean Washington is activated from the injured reserve Saturday to take over return duties.

The Titans ruled out three players and listed two as questionable. Cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting and offensive tackle Andre Dillard are the two most significant losses for Tennessee.

Dillon Radunz is expected to be the starting left tackle Sunday in Dillard’s place.

Jaguars still have 2 out, 4 limited in Thursday practice

The Jaguars didn’t make any changes to their injury report from Wednesday to Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made no updates to their injury report from Wednesday to Thursday, listing the same two players as non-participants and four players as limited ahead of a Week 11 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Return specialist and wide receiver Jamal Agnew wasn’t dressed for practice, but cornerback Tyson Campbell joined the team for stretching before leaving to work on the side.

It’d be surprising if wide receiver Zay Jones, who was limited again, is back on the field Sunday after sitting out for more than a month with a knee injury. The other three limited players seem on track to play against the Titans.

For Tennessee, there were a few updates and all in the wrong direction. Linebacker Chase Campbell was placed on injured, reserve, cornerback Anthony Kendall didn’t practice at all, and linebacker Luke Gifford was limited.

While three key players — Derrick Henry, DeAndre Hopkins, and Denico Autry — were all listed, it was just a rest day for the trio of veterans.

Jamal Agnew, Tyson Campbell sit out Wednesday practice

Two Jaguars players sat out Wednesday and four, including receiver Zay Jones, were limited.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were without return specialist Jamal Agnew and cornerback Tyson Campbell at Wednesday practice and had four players limited.

On a rainy day in Jacksonville that forced the team inside the Miller Electric Center practice facility, offensive lineman Anton Harrison, wide receiver Zay Jones, defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, and wide receiver Parker Washington were all limited.

Jones was arrested Monday on a domestic battery charge, but was back at practice two days later as he continues to work to return from a knee injury.

Washington has been on injured reserve since suffering a knee injury in Week 4, but his 21-day window to return was opened Wednesday morning.

The Jaguars’ Week 11 opponent, the Tennessee Titans, listed 11 players on their injury report, although that included six who practiced fully.

The Titans’ offensive line has been banged up for much of the year and is now hoping starting left tackle Andre Dillard will return from a concussion suffered in Week 10. Wide receiver Treylon Burks missed the team’s last game due to a concussion.

Jaguars open WR Parker Washington’s 21-day window to return from IR

With Jamal Agnew injured, the Jaguars will begin working Parker Washington back into the mix.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will begin working rookie wide receiver and returner Parker Washington back into the mix after activating his 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday.

Washington, 21, was a healthy scratch for the first three games of the year before stepping into the lineup in Week 4 when Jamal Agnew was out due to injury. Washington’s NFL debut didn’t last long as he suffered a knee injury on his second career snap that sent him to the IR.

While the Jaguars have until early December to move Washington to the active roster, that move may come much sooner than that.

Agnew suffered a shoulder injury Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers and coach Doug Pederson wasn’t optimistic about the veteran’s chances of playing in the Jaguars’ upcoming game against the Tennessee Titans in Week 11.

“There’s a potential that as the week progresses, we’ll see where he’s at, but it doesn’t look promising right now on a Monday,” Pederson said. “We’ll see where he is during the course of the week.”

It’s likely that Washington has been healed up and ready for a return for a while. There just wasn’t much urgency from the Jaguars to make a roster move when it’d mean the rookie would take one of 53 spots on the active roster and likely be a healthy scratch on game days.

Don’t be surprised if Washington is moved to the active roster later this week, making him available as the team’s returner Sunday against the Titans.

Jamal Agnew shoulder injury ‘doesn’t look promising’ for Week 11

Doug Pederson doesn’t like Jamal Agnew’s chances at playing Sunday against the Titans.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson doesn’t like return specialist Jamal Agnew’s chances at playing Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

“Jamal fell on his shoulder in the game [vs. the San Francisco 49ers], so he’s got a little shoulder issue going on,” Pederson said Monday. “There’s a potential that as the week progresses, we’ll see where he’s at. But it doesn’t look promising right now on a Monday. We’ll see where he is during the course of the week.”

Agnew, 28, was injured on a first quarter kickoff return and was initially ruled questionable, but never came back into the game. Running back D’Ernest Johnson returned kicks for the remainder of the game and wide receiver Christian Kirk returned punts.

The Jaguars began the year with rookie Parker Washington listed as the backup returner, but the sixth-round pick landed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury in his NFL debut. Since then, Agnew has been the sole returner listed on the depth chart.

It’s unclear for now if the Jaguars would stick with the combination of Johnson and Kirk if Agnew is unavailable Sunday against the Titans.

Agnew has averaged 27.7 yards on seven kick returns this season and 10.6 yards per punt return.

Jamal Agnew: ‘People are scared to kick it to us for a reason’

Jamal Agnew isn’t worried about the Jaguars’ punt return game lagging much longer.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ special teams unit bounced back from a rough showing against the Houston Texans in Week 3 to put together strong performances in London. Brandon McManus was a perfect four-of-four on field goals, Logan Cooke averaged 50.9 yards on nine punts, and opposing punt returners managed just nine yards across the two games.

The only thing that was missing was the Jaguars having a dangerous return game of their own.

After Pro Bowl returner Jamal Agnew missed Week 4 with a quad injury, he returned in Week 5 but managed only five yards on two punt returns against the Buffalo Bills. So what needs to change to get the return game back on track? Not much of anything, according to Agnew.

“Just stay patient and don’t force anything,” Agnew said Friday. “People are scared to kick it to us for a reason. We don’t get a lot of opportunities and, when we do, we get everybody’s best on returns. Obviously, they know who I am. They don’t kick it to me like they kick it to everybody else.

“So we just got to stay patient. That’s one thing I’ve gotten used to in my career is just waiting for the plays to come and not trying to force anything. Ten yards, I’m fine with that. That’s a first down for the offense. The big plays will come, we’ve just got to stay patient.”

Agnew made a big impact earlier this season when he ripped off a 48-yard return in the fourth quarter of a Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts to spark a 14-point quarter for the Jaguars.

Agnew said that play was starting to feel inevitable after he saw the way the Colts were punting earlier in the game.

“All day they were shanking them, they were scared to punt to me,” Agnew said. “Kick return, they were booting them out of the end zone. I think it was [director of player engagement] Marcus Pollard, said ‘Hey, just wait for it, it’s gonna come.’

“I had a 10-yard one and then it was a plus-50 punt and it was on the ground and I knew ‘this is the play right here.’ Stayed patient for it, grabbed it, and made a play. That’s all it is in the return game, you get one opportunity, you gotta stay patient, and take advantage of it.”

Agnew will get another chance to break a big one against the Colts — who have allowed 150 punt return yards (third most in the NFL) — on Sunday at EverBank Stadium.

Jaguars WRs Zay Jones, Jamal Agnew active vs. Bills

The Jaguars have their wide receiving corps back to healthy for a Week 5 game against the Bills.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will officially have wide receivers Zay Jones and Jamal Agnew back in the lineup Sunday.

Jones, who missed two games, and Agnew, who was out last week, were both absent from the Jaguars’ short list of inactive players:

Also missing from the list is rookie defensive back Antonio Johnson, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury since August. The fifth-round pick is set to make his NFL debut and will likely be a contributor on special teams.

The Jaguars opened the possibility that Dawuane Smoot would make his 2023 debut earlier this week when the team opened his 21-day window to return from the PUP list. But Smoot was never activated ahead of Sunday, so he’s still not a current member of the 53-man roster and doesn’t need to be listed as inactive.

Buffalo similarly opened Von Miller’s 21-day window earlier this week, but unlike the Jaguars, the Bills officially activated Miller on Saturday. With the veteran pass rusher not listed among the team’s inactives, he’s set to play against the Jaguars on Sunday.

Hamlin, who has made an inspiring return to football after suffering cardiac arrest on the field last season, has been active for just one game so far this year. Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam, a 2022 first-round pick, is set to make his season debut after being a healthy scratch in the first four weeks.

Jaguars place rookie WR Parker Washington on injured reserve

Parker Washington will be out of action for at least four weeks due to a knee injury suffered against the Falcons.

The Jacksonville Jaguars placed rookie wide receiver Parker Washington on the injured reserve, the team announced Saturday.

Washington, 21, was a sixth-round pick in April and was listed as the team’s backup returner behind Jamal Agnew on the depth chart. With Agnew out of action in Week 4, the rookie receiver was active for the first time in his career. His NFL debut lasted just a couple snaps before Washington suffered a knee injury on his first career punt return.

“It’s a little more significant with the knee,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said of Washington’s injury Monday. “He’ll undergo further testing today and tomorrow to get some more images on it. I would expect him not to be available this week.”

Washington didn’t immediately land on the injured reserve, suggesting that imaging of the knee didn’t reveal severe damage. But after the receiver was ruled out Friday, the team is shutting him down for at least four games.

When Agnew was in the lineup in the first three weeks, Washington was a healthy scratch. Agnew is expected to be available in Week 5 and Christian Kirk will likely be the team’s backup returner.

Jaguars rule out Dawuane Smoot, list 4 as questionable vs. Bills

The Jaguars ruled out four players, including Dawuane Smoot, for Sunday and listed four more as questionable.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled out four players and listed four more as questionable for a Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills.

Outside linebacker Dawuane Smoot, who rejoined the Jaguars at practice this week as he begins his return from the PUP list, was among the group that won’t play Sunday.

Receivers Zay Jones and Jamal Agnew are both questionable, although Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said he’s optimistic both will play.

Rookie safety Antonio Johnson, who has been dealing with a hamstring issue since August, should be “up and active this week” for the first time in his career, Pederson told reporters.

For the Bills, two players were ruled out and two were listed as questionable.

Defensive end Greg Rousseau is tied for second on the team in sacks with three. While veteran pass rusher Von Miller is listed as questionable to make his season debut, he told reporters Friday that there’s a “94.5 percent chance” he’s ready to go Sunday.
