Per the terms of his rookie contract, Jamal Adams received a $2.765 million guaranteed roster bonus on Friday.
As of now, this will be the bulk of his earnings in 2020. He has a base salary of $825,000, too. In the near future, the Jets will pick up Adams’ fifth-year option for the 2021 season.
When Joe Douglas spoke to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis at the beginning of the NFL offseason, the Jets general manager indicated that he wanted to make Adams a “Jet for life.” Douglas acknowledged that there had been “some preliminary discussions” regarding an extension, but there hasn’t been much traction on that front with free agency in full swing.
Ever since Adams’ name surfaced in midseason trade talks, Douglas has made it known that he wants the safety to stay with the Jets.
An Adams extension with the Jets is not about if, but when. However, the Jets still need to set aside money for the final wave of free agency and for the 2020 draft class.
Coming off the best season of his career, Adams, 24, was named a first-team All-Pro in 2019 and made his second Pro Bowl in three seasons. This is the first offseason he is eligible for a contract extension.
