New mock draft has Sixers taking Santa Clara scorer Jalen Williams

A new mock draft has the Philadelphia 76ers selecting Santa Clara scorer Jalen Williams at No. 23 in the draft.

Now that the Philadelphia 76ers will have a first-round pick in the 2022 NBA draft thanks to the decision made by the Brooklyn Nets to defer the pick they acquired in the James Harden deal to 2023, it is time to look at some mock drafts and see some possible selections for Philadelphia.

The Sixers will hold the No. 23 pick in this draft and while they could trade the pick, it would be in principle before the draft and then become official after draft night, there are some pieces in the draft that fit what they need.

A mock draft performed by Yahoo! Sports has the Sixers selecting Santa Clara scorer Jalen Williams:

Williams was the best player on the court in both days of the draft combine scrimmages. He got to the basket with ease, shot the ball well and had some of the best finishes in transition. Defensively, he fought through screens to keep his man in front and was effective in help-side defense, shooting the gap for steals and tips. Last year, Josh Primo (No. 12 pick, Spurs) and Bones Hyland (No. 26, Nuggets) were the biggest surprises of the first round, and Williams could be that guy this year.

Williams averaged 18.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game during his junior season with the Broncos and he would help Philadelphia in terms of their need for depth. He has a bit of “dawg” in him and he is a guy who can help the Sixers find some offense for their bench unit.

Santa Clara junior Jalen Williams to hire agent, remain in NBA draft

Williams was among the standouts at the draft combine and will now forgo his remaining college eligibility.

Santa Clara junior Jalen Williams will reportedly sign with an agent and remain in the 2022 NBA draft, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Williams, who was named to the All-WCC first team, averaged 18 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 33 games. He ranked second in the conference in scoring and finished eighth in program history with 594 total points on the year.

The 6-foot-6 guard declared for the draft prior to the early entry deadline while maintaining the option to return to school. He will forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility by signing with an agent, ending his tenure with the Broncos.

Williams emerged as perhaps the top player at the draft combine last week in Chicago, Illinois. He averaged 15 points, four rebounds and one assist in two scrimmage games. He showed he can do a little bit of everything and solidified himself as a borderline first-round pick.

The 21-year-old climbed draft boards for much of the year and continued that momentum into the combine. He likely earned himself more workouts following that outing and could continue to rise up in the draft, as a result.

4 NBA draft sleepers who have dominated the combine and shouldn’t have to return to school

The NBA draft combine is one of the most exciting events of the basketball season, and it teaches us a lot about the next generation of players.

The NBA draft combine is one of the most exciting events of the basketball season, and it teaches us a lot about the next generation of players.

One of the lessons we can learn from the event is whether or not someone will stay in this class and become professional, or if they want to return for another year of college basketball.

Last season, for example, Kansas wing Ochai Agbaji tested the NBA draft waters before he opted to return to college. He went on to win the national championship.

When players like Agbaji are testing the waters of the NBA draft while maintaining the eligibility to return to school, they receive feedback from scouts and executives as they make their decision about turning pro. Some have used that feedback to improve their draft stock, while others were satisfied with what they gleaned and opted to take the proverbial leap to the next level.

Based on what we have seen from the NBA draft combine so far, here are some of the no-brainer decisions. Others (e.g. Dalen Terry, Josh Minott, Harrison Ingram, Jaylin Williams, John Butler, Moussa Diabate, etc.) will have a tougher choice.
