NFL Trade Deadline: Ranking Commanders’ needs ahead of Tuesday

We rank the Commanders’ needs ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

The Washington Commanders are ahead of schedule. Remember when head coach Dan Quinn was first asked about Washington’s rebuild? He hesitated to call it a rebuild, instead using the word recalibrate.

It’s a word he’s used since, too, which make s

At 6-2, Washington is in first place in the NFC East and has answered many roster questions midway through the season. Remember the offensive tackle concerns? What about wide receiver and edge rusher? And cornerback?

With Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline approaching, we rank Washington’s needs. We recently previewed eight realistic targets, but now, we’ll focus on the positional needs from lowest to highest.

4. Offensive tackle

Imagine calling this the Commanders’ fourth-biggest need in August. Andrew Wylie has been a much better player at right tackle this season. And the combination of rookie Brandon Coleman and veteran Cornelius Lucas at left tackle has been outstanding. General manager Adam Peters will listen, but it’s doubtful he will make a move here. Washington is set with its top three. Lucas will miss the Week 9 game at New York but is not dealing with a long-term injury.

What if a struggling team gives up a tackle that hasn’t yet lived up to its potential? Would Peters throw a late-round pick to that team, hoping a change of scenery would help. Think Cleveland’s Jedrick Wills.

The Commanders will certainly look to add an offensive tackle in the offseason, but that’s not a priority now.

3. Wide receiver

Washington traded former first-round pick Jahan Dotson in August, and Peters may have stolen a third-round pick from Philadelphia. The subtraction of Dotson and the addition of Noah Brown have changed this group. The Commanders love this room built around Terry McLaurin. Rookie Luke McCaffrey feels close to a breakout. The analytics prove his separation skills are elite. Dyami Brown hasn’t put up big numbers but has proven reliable when his number is called. Veteran Olamide Zaccheaus was an underrated pickup.

Peters will keep tabs on all available receivers. What if there was a chance he could land Tee Higgins? Higgins is big, young, and could serve as Washington’s 1b to McLaurin’s 1a. Additionally, the Commanders have the cap space to pay Higgins the contract he demands. This is doubtful, but it wouldn’t shock anyone to see Washington add a receiver to the room.

2. Edge rusher

The Commanders have a solid group here, but no pass rushers who can take over games. Realistically, that option doesn’t exist on the trade market unless Peters can convince the Browns to part with Myles Garrett (not happening) or the Raiders to part with Maxx Crosby (unlikely). Head coach Dan Quinn is excellent at creating pressure, and players like Dante Fowler Jr., Dorance Armstrong, Clelin Ferrell, rookie Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Jalyn Holmes have all produced at times this season. A realistic option here is Browns veteran Za’Darius Smith. Smith would be in a part-time role for Washington, where he could thrive in limited snaps.

1. Cornerback

This is Washington’s most significant need. There should be options available. Could the Commanders swing big and land Marshon Lattimore (Saints), Jalen Ramsey (Dolphins), or Denzel Ward (Browns)? The smoke around Washington is that Peters is checking on cornerbacks. Emmanuel Forbes hasn’t taken the next step in his career, and the team clearly lacks confidence in him. Benjamin St-Juste is better than some want to admit. However, he’s not a No. 1 corner and a free agent at season’s end.

Noah Igbinoghene was an excellent low-cost pickup. He’s played well. Rookie Mike Sainristil is already the Commanders’ top cornerback. He’s had to play out of position some and has still thrived. Whether it’s a veteran like Jonathan Jones or someone like Lattimore, this feels like the move for Washington.

Bills vs. Dolphins: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 9

Bills vs. Dolphins: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 9

The Buffalo Bills (6-2) will host the Miami Dolphins (2-5) in their upcoming Week 9 matchup.

In this divisional clash, the games within the game will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Dolphins contest:

Keon Coleman/Amari Cooper vs. Miami CBs

Getty Images

The Dolphins have one of the better cornerback duos in the NFL. Jalen Ramsey is still performing like one of the best in the NFL and Kendall Fuller is no slouch either. According to Pro Football Focus, Ramsey grades as the 13th-best corner in the league while Fuller grades 42nd-best.

They are going to make the Bills’ boundary receivers work for their catches. Insert Coleman and Cooper. We know what Cooper is capable of at wideout, and in the last couple of weeks, Coleman has emerged as well. These two can make catches with the best of them, and with Ramsey and Fuller in coverage, they might need to come down with some contested catches.

De’Von Achane vs. Bills’ front seven

Imagn Images

Running back De’Von Achane is performing well despite Miami’s recent offensive struggles. He has averaged 87 rushing yards and almost seven yards per carry in their last two games. And, when the Bills visited Miami in Week 2, he was the lone bright spot for the Dolphins on offense.

In Week 2 he accounted for 165 yards from scrimmage and scored their only touchdown. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry and caught all seven of his targets.

The Bills have had an up-and-down season defending the run. They’ve had some games where they can’t defend it and some games where they can. In all, they rank middle of the pack in the NFL, allowing 120 yards per game on the ground. Last week, they completely shut down one of the better runners in the league, Kenneth Walker III, so it will be interesting to see which form of the Bills’ run defense shows up in Week 9.

Bills offensive line vs. Dolphins defensive line

Despite losing standout edge defender Jaelen Phillips to a season-ending injury earlier this year, the Dolphins still have a solid group on the defensive line. Calais Campbell, described by PFF as an “ageless wonder,” is still wreaking havoc on the interior of the line. Zach Sieler is another guy who can move bodies on the interior, but he is questionable with a facial injury.

On the edge, Emmanuel Ogbah and 2024 first-round pick Chop Robinson have shown flashes at times. The Dolphins’ defensive line currently ranks 13th-best in the NFL according to PFF. They have dropped seven spots in the rankings after back-to-back disappointing efforts.

The Bills offensive line is looking elite at the moment, coming off of a one-sack performance against the Seattle Seahawks. They have given up only ten total sacks in 2024 which ranks best in the NFL. According to PFF, the offensive line as a whole currently ranks seventh-best. There will be a lot of talent fighting in the trenches when the Bills are on offense.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray needs to be mistake-free vs. Dolphins

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will have his hands full attacking the Miami Dolphins’ pass defense in Week 8.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will need to beware of the Miami Dolphins’ pass defense at Hard Rock Stadium Sunday.

Defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Jordan Poyer have done due diligence, keeping the Dolphins’ defense intact despite the injury to quarterback Tua Tagivoloa and defensive back Xavien Howard. Amongst NFL teams, the Dolphins actually rank No. 1 in opponent pass yards allowed per game.

However, the Dolphins haven’t been nearly as strong versus the run. The Tennessee Titans had a time of possession of 34:22 versus the Dolphins in week seven and rushed the ball for 142 yards.

With this, the Cardinals cannot fall into the thrill of trying to pass the ball at high volumes versus the Dolphins defense. With Tagovailoa back in the lineup, it is expected that the Dolphins will be just as effective as they were before his concussion.

To counter the Dolphins’ attack, the Cardinals may sequence in some run-option and give increased touches to running back James Conner. Sustaining offensive drives will be key on the road for the Cardinals and they cannot get off to a slow start if they want to win this game.

Tyreek Hill says Jalen Ramsey will handle new AFC East receivers

Davante Adams and Amari Cooper are the newest weapons in the AFC East, but Tyreek Hill says the Dolphins will be just fine.

The Buffalo Bills and New York Jets made moves to add offensive firepower this week, acquiring Amari Cooper and Davante Adams, respectively. Tyreek Hill isn’t too worried about it, though.

Hill says he’s still the top dog in the AFC East and the Miami Dolphins have all they need to slow down Adams and Cooper.

“They’re still not the best receiver in the league, because I am and I stand on that,” Hill said Wednesday. “No, I’m definitely happy for Davante teaming back up with his old quarterback. … And for Amari, I think him and Josh Allen, those two guys will play very well together.

“It’s going to be a good test for our DBs when we play them, but got Jalen Ramsey on our team – we straight.”

After missing all of preseason and much of training camp due to a hamstring injury, Ramsey had a sluggish start to 2024. But after a couple rough performances, he’s been mostly back to his usual self in recent weeks.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ramsey was targeted 10 times in the Dolphins’ last three games and has allowed six receptions for only 36 yards.

In Miami’s Week 11 win against the Las Vegas Raiders last season, Adams caught seven passes for 82 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown. However, PFF credited Ramsey with allowing only one reception for six yards in the five times he was targeted while defending Adams in that game.

With one more game against the Bills and two against the Jets still on the schedule, it may largely be up to Ramsey to keep the AFC East’s two newest receivers in check. Evidently, Hill’s confident he’ll get the job done.

Poor Jalen Ramsey: Past Josh Allen comment has aged very poorly

Poor Jalen Ramsey: Past Josh Allen comment has aged very poorly:

The narrative changed over the years but as they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression.

Whether it was with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams or his current team in the Miami Dolphins, cornerback Jalen Ramsey has had a tough time with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Early in his career, Ramsey had one word to describe Allen: “Trash” back in August 2018.

As mentioned, Ramsey has had a change of heart. By 2022, like many to be fair, Ramsey went on to praise Allen saying “his growth has been crazy.”

His original comment is the one that sticks in the minds of many in western New York, and now onto our stat.

Ramsey’s record Allen? Lets just say the Bills QB has the edge–including Thursday’s 31-10 win over the Dolphins:

Dolphins list Jalen Ramsey as active, rule out Ethan Bonner vs. Jaguars

Jalen Ramsey is in the lineup and Ethan Bonner is out, the Dolphins announced Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins ruled out Jaylen Wright and Ethan Bonner as two of six inactives for their Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The notable name omitted from the list was cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was questionable for the game due to a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice Wednesday and Thursday.

https://www.twitter.com/MiamiDolphins/status/1832803839671414982/

Earlier in the week, it seemed Bonner was in line to start in Ramsey’s place. Not only did that not come to fruition, undrafted rookie Storm Duck got the nod on the active roster over Bonner on Sunday.

The exclusion of Wright is also a bit surprising. While the Dolphins have a dynamic duo of running backs in Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, Wright showed plenty in preseason and appeared in line to make a regular season impact.

The Jaguars’ list of inactives didn’t include any surprises.

https://www.twitter.com/Jaguars/status/1832803598423527765/

Jacksonville listed safety and special teamer Daniel Thomas as questionable Friday before downgrading him to out Saturday.

Pat Surtain’s record-breaking contract has already been topped

Just two days after the Broncos gave Pat Surtain an average of $24M per year, the Dolphins gave Jalen Ramsey a deal worth $24.1M per year.

Pat Surtain’s reign as the highest cornerback in NFL history only lasted about 48 hours.

Two days after the Denver Broncos gave Surtain a four-year, $96 million contract extension that averaged $24 million per season, the Miami Dolphins gave Jalen Ramsey a three-year, $72.3 million deal that averages $24.1 million per season.

Similar to the quarterback market, the highest-paid cornerback is often the most-recently paid cornerback.

Surtain’s contract already looked like a bargain because he had two years left on his existing deal. That essentially made PS2’s contract a six-year, $119 million deal worth an average of just under $20 million per season.

As the NFL’s salary cap continues to go up each year, Surtain’s contract will age well. Sauce Gardner is still playing on his rookie contract. When it comes time for an extension, Gardner’s agent will want to top the Ramsey contract, dropping PS2’s average even lower in the highest-paid rankings.

When it comes to big extensions for star players, getting a deal done sooner than later is always cheaper, as has been demonstrated with Surtain.

Jaguars vs. Dolphins: Final injury reports

Jaguars vs. Dolphins: Final injury reports

The Jaguars have deemed their one injured player questionable for Sunday’s matchup with the Dolphins, while Miami’s thick Week 1 injury report has been narrowed down to only two game statuses, one player labeled questionable and another ruled out.

Find Jacksonville and Miami’s final Week 1 injury reports and game statuses below.

* indicates an upgraded status from the previous day

Jacksonville Jaguars

  • S Daniel Thomas (Achilles) — limited
  • DE Arik Armstead (veteran rest) — did not participate

Game statuses

  • S Daniel Thomas: QUESTIONABLE

Analysis: Defensive lineman Arik Armstead was given Friday off from practice. No concern should be raised about his availability for Week 1.

Safety Daniel Thomas, who has been recovering from an Achilles injury since Week 2 of the preseason, was limited in practice throughout the week but performed well enough to give Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson hope he will play on Sunday.

“He’s progressed,” Pederson said Friday. “We had a plan for him to work himself back into practice. We’ve got another day today and then see where he’s at. But we’re optimistic and hopeful that he can play.”

Jacksonville has five players on its injured reserve with two, running back Keilan Robinson and safety Andrew Wingard, designated to return this season.

Miami Dolphins

Four players given a veteran rest day without an injury designation Wednesday have been removed from this list.

  • S Jevon Holland (ankle) — full
  • LB Anthony Walker (knee/veteran rest) — full
  • S Jordan Poyer (thumb/veteran rest) — full
  • DT Benito Jones (knee) — full*
  • C Aaron Brewer (hand) — full*
  • LB Quinton Bell (thumb) — full
  • CB Jalen Ramsey (hamstring) — limited*
  • LB Jaelan Phillips (Achilles/veteran rest) — full
  • WR Malik Washington (quadricep) — did not participate

Game statuses

  • CB Jalen Ramsey: QUESTIONABLE
  • WR Malik Washington: OUT

Analysis: Cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s status represented the biggest question mark on Miami’s injury report this week as he did not practice Wednesday or Thursday.

But upon his three-year contract extension with Miami being reported on Friday, Ramsey returned to work in a limited capacity and is now trending upward fewer than 48 hours before kickoff.

The Dolphins’ injury report does not include four players on Miami’s reserve/physically unable to perform list: Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn, edge rusher Bradley Chubb and linebacker Cameron Goode.

This pairs with eight players currently on Miami’s injured reserve.

Dolphins extend former Jaguars’ star before Week 1 showdown

Dolphins extend former Jaguars’ star before Week 1 showdown

In the days before facing his former team, if he is healthy enough to do so, cornerback Jalen Ramsey reached a three-year contract extension with Miami on Friday, ahead of the Dolphins’ final practice in preparation to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ramsey’s new deal is worth $72.3 million including $55.3 million guaranteed, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rapoport shared that Ramsey and the Dolphins agreed to the extension before it was reported Friday, but that the cornerback wanted to wait to announce the contract until he was ready to return to the practice field.

Ramsey did not participate in Miami’s Wednesday and Thursday practices while nursing a hamstring injury. NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported Ramsey took part in individual drills Friday, after the news of his new deal broke.

Ramsey was Jacksonville’s No. 5 overall selection in the 2016 NFL draft. He spent over three seasons with the Jaguars and started 51 games with the club, totaling 193 total tackles with six for loss, nine interceptions, 45 defended passes and two forced fumbles.

But Ramsey became disgruntled with the Jaguars early in the 2019 season, when he was eligible for his first NFL contract extension but did not receive one from Jacksonville.

Ramsey demanded a trade from the organization after a sideline spat with former head coach Doug Marrone in Week 2 of the campaign. After several weeks in which he did not play, Ramsey was dealt to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two first-round picks and one fourth-round pick.

In over three seasons with the Rams, Ramsey compiled 209 tackles with four for loss, 10 interceptions, 47 pass breakups and four forced fumbles.

Ramsey joined Miami via trade from Los Angeles ahead of the 2023 season and recorded 22 tackles, three interceptions and five defended passes in 10 games with the Dolphins last year.

Mike McDaniel: Eager to get Jalen Ramsey out there, but we’ll be smart

Unsurprisingly, Mike McDaniel isn’t offering many hints about Jalen Ramsey’s readiness to play Sunday.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey returned to practice Friday, hours after becoming the NFL’s highest paid player at his position earlier in the day.

But will he be available to play Sunday after missing practice both Wednesday and Thursday? Unsurprisingly, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was unwilling to offer many hints.

“He had a good walkthrough today. I think we’re gonna be smart, but we’re eager to get him out there,” McDaniel said of Ramsey before practice Friday. “I anticipate him — in some way, shape, or form — at practice. I don’t know the level yet.

“That and whether or not he can play in the game, it does matter to everyone — both teams. … Quite honestly, I don’t know. If I did know, I wouldn’t tell you, but I really don’t know.”

https://twitter.com/DavidFurones_/status/1832093576232333533

Ramsey, 29, has earned Pro Bowl honors in each of the last seven seasons and was acquired by the Dolphins in a trade during the 2023 offseason. While meniscus surgery kept the cornerback out early in the year, he returned to play in 10 games and allowed a 52.9 passer rating when targeted in coverage, according to PFF.

While it would be a boost to the Dolphins secondary to have Ramsey in action against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a looming Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills next week could force the team to be extra cautious.

“We just got to be smart and cognizant that we do have two games in whatever that is, a little over a week, so we’ll see,” Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said Thursday. “But the one thing I do know about Jalen (Ramsey), is that it’s not for a lack of work ethic. He’s doing everything he can in the training room to try to put himself out there.”

In the event that Ramsey is held out of action Sunday, second-year cornerback Ethan Bonner would likely get the start. On Thursday, he said he’s prepared for that and would embrace the opportunity.
