Oklahoma’s Brady Manek and Jalen Hill out against Kansas due to COVID-19 protocols

Oklahoma’s Brady Manek and Jalen Hill will miss Saturday’s game against Kansas due to COVID-19 protocols.

Oklahoma will be without one of it’s best players and one it’s top bench contributors on Saturday against No. 6 Kansas.

Brady Manek and Jalen Hill will both miss the game due to COVID-19 protocols, the team announced on Twitter.

It is unclear at this point if one of them tested positive or if it is a case of contact tracing, but either way the two key players will be out for one of the Sooners’ toughest games of the entire season. Manek is the team’s second-highest scorer and Hill is one the team’s best rebounders coming off of the bench.

How this affects the rotations will surely be something to watch as Oklahoma tries to spring the road upset. The game is set to tip at 3:45 p.m. CT in Lawrence.

Oklahoma has reportedly reached out to Louisville grad transfer Darius Perry

With an abrupt finish to the college basketball season, those eligible to transfer are already planning their futures.

With an abrupt finish to the college basketball season, those eligible to transfer are already planning their futures.

Louisville graduate transfer Darius Perry was contacted by a slew of teams per Rivals insider Corey Evans.

The Louisville guard was in talks with Oklahoma as well as others as to where he should play his last year of collegiate ball. Perry made his announcement to leave Louisville public on Monday night via Twitter.

A 6-foot-2, 195-pound class of 2017 guard, Perry was a four-star recruit coming out of high school per Rivals. The Marietta, Ga. (Wheeler High School), native closed his high-school career as the No. 98 ranked player in the nation before heading to Louisville.

In 100 games with the Cardinals, Perry averaged 16.6 minutes per game, 4.8 points per game, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 36.4% from behind the arc.

With Alondes Williams, De’Vion Harmon, Kur Kuath, and Jalen Hill being the only ones to come off the bench consistently, Perry could be a welcomed addition for some added depth.

Despite loss to Texas, Oklahoma not on the bubble in latest Bracketology

Oklahoma (18-12, 8-9) took a tough ‘L’ on Tuesday night but not all is lost on the Sooners’ season.

Oklahoma (18-12, 8-9) took a tough ‘L’ on Tuesday night but not all is lost on the Sooners’ season.

Texas (19-11, 9-8) is one of the hottest teams not just in the Big 12, but in the entire nation. Shak Smart’s mid-season resurrection of the Longhorns winning five-straight conference games to give Texas a chance at making the NCAA Tournament while being without three key players.

Oklahoma’s loss to the Longhorns is being respected as much as it could be. The Sooners are still considered a 10-seed by the Bracket Matrix.

Texas is currently listed as a 12-seed’ and averages an 11.33-seed via the Bracket Matrix, listed on 46 of the 136 brackets tested in the matrix.

Oklahoma’s non-conference is helping its cause yet again. North Texas (13-seed), Stanford (11-seed), Wichita State (11-seed), and Creighton (3-seed) all propel the Sooners into the tournament. While going 1-3 against the four tournament teams, the Sooners played all of them on the road with Stanford being a neutral site game in Kansas City.

Oklahoma has one final regular-season left as they head south on I-35 to Ft. Worth, Texas to take on TCU (16-13, 7-9) on Saturday. The Horned Frogs boast a 14-4 home record, coming off an upset win over No. 3 Baylor last Saturday.

Oklahoma and TCU tip-off at 3p.m. on ESPN2.

3 takeaways from Oklahoma’s 53-52 win over UCF

A win is a win is a win. Oklahoma (8-2) crawled their way to a much-needed win, beating Central Florida (9-3) 53-52.

A win is a win is a win.

Oklahoma (8-2) crawled their way to a much-needed win to avoid a three-game losing skid, beating Central Florida (9-3) 53-52.

DOOLITTLE NEEDS TO DO A LOT

Preventing a three-game losing streak comes down to the older guys on a team. With Kristian Doolittle being the lone senior for the Sooners, he kept the team afloat against the Knights. His demeanor throughout the game, despite Oklahoma not being able to make shots, stayed consistent and positive.

His 12 points accounted for five of the Sooners’ 21 total shots made.

IT IS FIXABLE

Oklahoma has had a rough first half of the season although their record may not fully recognize it. The shooting woes that have plagued the Sooners, though are very much fixable.

“It’s a good time for a break,” Lon Kruger said following the win. “I think very clearly, [we] understand, we have a lot of work to do,”

The flow offensively was non-existent once again as Oklahoma shot an abysmal 21 of 65.

THE DEFENSE STEPPED UP

After a poor performance against Creighton, allowing 83 points, the defense buckled down when the offense screeched to a halt against UCF.

“Needless to say, both teams had a lot of trouble scoring,” Kruger said.

Regardless of the competition, holding a team to 52 points is something to be proud of for the Sooners. The Knights had multiple chances to take control of the game and put it away early but Oklahoma kept chipping away and forcing stops.

Oklahoma takes an extended break for the holidays and will be back in action against Texas Rio Grande Valley on Monday, Dec. 30 at 6:00 p.m. CT.

3 takeaways from Oklahoma’s 82-80 win over North Texas

Oklahoma (7-1) rode out the rollercoaster that was North Texas (3-6) with Kristian Doolittle calling “game” with just seconds on the clock.

Oklahoma (7-1) rode out the rollercoaster that was North Texas (3-6) with Kristian Doolittle calling “game” with just seconds left on the clock. The 82-80 victory means a short bus ride home to Norman for the Sooners. Here is three takeaways from the win over the Mean Green.

DOOLITTLE IS THE MAN

Senior forward Kristian Doolittle did a lot tonight. finishing with 28 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Doolittle hit the eventual game-winner with 13.5 seconds left in the game. Doolittle stretched the floor nailing all three of his three-point attempts. It is clear that the team’s performance depends on Doolittle and that he can carry a team through the ebbs and flows of the game.

DE’VION HARMON HOMECOMING

The freshman guard from Denton, Texas got to play in a familiar arena tonight.  Living just 10 minutes from the North Texas campus, Harmon found himself in familiar territory against the Mean Green. Harmon, who battled foul trouble all night, finished the game with a quiet 11 points and only one assist. It may have been nerves as he played in front of his hometown for the first time since high school but Harmon was almost forgettable in the win.

WHERE DID EVERYONE GO?

Outside of Doolittle, Austin Reaves was the only other noticeable presence on the floor for Oklahoma. Reaves’ 22 points keeps him on pace as the Sooners’ leading scorer for the season. Brady Manek did seal the deal for Oklahoma, splitting free throws at the end of the game and finishing with 16 points. Outside of the big three, there were not any Sooners that stood out. Only two of Oklahoma’s 82 points came off the bench via Jalen Hill. The Sooners continue to struggle behind the line, going 9-24 tonight.

Oklahoma’s next game is next Saturday, December 14 as they head up to Wichita, Kansas to play Wichita State. Tip-off is set for 5p.m. CT and can be found on ESPN2.

ALL-TIME RECORD: UCLA leads the series, 8-1

ODDS: UCLA -17, per KenPom

PREVIEW: San Jose State will be looking for an upset victory on Sunday night as they travel down to Pauley Pavilion to do battle with UCLA.

The Spartans come into the game on the heels of two disappointing losses to Portland State and Oregon State. Things were looking up for Jean Prioleau’s team after beating Hofstra in the opener and snagging another early win over a Grambling State squad that could win the SWAC.

But the other shoe dropped hard, with SJSU losing their last two games by a combined 50 points.

This drop in production comes at an unideal time for a team that plays its next four games against UCLA, Utah State, San Diego State, and Stanford. In fact, the Bruins might be the easiest opponent of the Spartans’ upcoming slate.

The Bruins also find themselves in the midst of a slide. After starting the year at 4-0, UCLA has lost three of its last four. They picked up a cheap win over Chaminade, the host of the Maui Invitational, but otherwise dropped games against Hofstra, BYU, and Michigan State.

Mick Cronin’s side saw early success going inside to big man Jalen Hill, but the redshirt sophomore has gone quiet in the past two games. Hill scored in single digits against both the Cougars and the Spartans after a 24-point explosion against Hofstra.

Nobody else on the Bruins has consistently stepped up when Hill has struggled.

Prince Ali, Tyger Campbell, and Cody Riley are all capable options, but none of them appear to playing at a level to truly take over a game as the primary scorer. UCLA was able to skate through their first four games, but their lack of scoring punch outside of hill has exposed a weakness that other teams can and should exploit.

That means that the San Jose State frontcourt will have their work cut out for them on Sunday evening.

Prioleau ran out a new starting lineup for the first time against the Beavers on Wednesday, starting former Wake Forest big man Samuel Japhet-Mathias. The transfer center responded by scoring a team-leading 10 points. Omari Moore also started in place Seneca Knight but had little impact in just 15 minutes on the floor.

Knight and fellow double-digit scorer Richard Washington Jr. combined to shoot just 2-for-15 off the bench. They have been the Spartans’ leading scorers over the first handful of games, but were nowhere to be found in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Shooting woes also followed Christian Anigwe, who shot 1-for-8 against Oregon State. The sophomore forward did secure 14 rebounds and block three shots, though.

But those issues are just about the shots they actually get off. Nearly a quarter of the Spartans’ possessions never make it that far, instead ending in a turnover. To put that in context, San Jose State ranks 308th in turnover rate, per KenPom.

There’s a lot that Jean Prioleau needs to get cleaned up if SJSU stands a chance at UCLA. But on the bright side for the Spartans, they’re catching the Bruins on a cold streak.

Prediction: UCLA 81, San Jose State 63

WHEN: Friday, November 15th — 9:00 P.M. MT / 8:00 P.M. PT

SERIES RECORD: UCLA leads, 5-0

ODDS: UCLA -7, per KenPom

PREVIEW: TJ Otzelberger’s first three games have been a pretty mixed bag, as UNLV sits at 1-2 after Tuesday night’s overtime loss to California. It was the second time in as many games that the Rebels fell in extra time.

But though the results are the same, there were far more positives for UNLV in the Cal game than there were against Kansas State.

For starters, Amauri Hardy didn’t have to do all the scoring. He still ended up with 15 points, but Donnie Tillman and Eli Mitrou-Long both topped him, scoring 17 and 16, respectively.

Tillman’s big game was exactly what UNLV needed. The transfer had a nice debut, but his 16 points against Purdue-Fort Wayne were propped up by a lot of trips to the line. Against the Golden Bears, Tillman was able to score from the field, hitting 5-of-10 from inside the arc and burying his first three-pointer in a Rebels uniform.

Also encouraging is that Tillman played 41 minutes against Cal, compared to a combined 42 minutes against Purdue-Fort Wayne and Kansas State. If UNLV is going to rise above their station, Tillman needs to build off of Tuesday’s performance.

But the Rebels face a difficult task in heading to one of college basketball’s most hallowed halls, Pauley Pavilion.

In their third consecutive game against a Power 5 opponent, UNLV heads to Westwood to take on UCLA and their new head coach, Mick Cronin. The Rebels have never beaten the Bruins in five tries. Their last meeting, a 77-75 thriller, took place in 2015.

This year’s UCLA team comes in with a 2-0 record, but they aren’t without their question marks, either. Their opener was a struggle against Long Beach State. The Bruins eked out a four-point victory over the Beach, but didn’t shoot particularly well.

Sunday’s tilt with UCSB started out looking like it would be another long game for the Bruins, but UCLA took over in the second half. Sophomores Jalen Hill and Jules Bernard both hit the 20-point mark. Hill was dominant inside, finishing with 22 points, ten rebounds, and three blocks.

Prince Ali and Chris Smith both scored in double figures, but shot a combined 4-for-18 from the floor. Freshman Tyger Campbell was held to just two points after scoring 15 against Long Beach State. Campbell did add six assists, proving his worth as a distributor in Mick Cronin’s offense.

UCLA could find themselves in the hunt for a top-half finish and a potential trip to the NCAA Tournament this March, but they will need to start playing the full 40 minutes if they are going to reach their potential.

UNLV needs to contain Hill inside and make the Bruins prove that they can hit the long ball effectively. But if UCLA is making their shots, it’s going to be difficult for the Rebels to hang.

They would also probably prefer to avoid another overtime.

4 takeaways from Oklahoma’s 77-69 win over Oregon State

After a slow start, a huge lead and a close finish, Oklahoma improves to 3-0 on the season with a win over Oregon State.

After a slow start, a huge lead and a close finish, Oklahoma improves to 3-0 on the season with a win over Oregon State.

The Sooners’ 77-69 victory over is the Beavers’ first loss of the season.

THIS TEAM IS FUN

When the Sooners are clicking, they are a really fun group to watch. Oklahoma showed off their athleticism, shooting abilities and defensive prowess against the Beavers. It did not matter who was out there, once the Sooners found their groove, they were going to score.

Four Sooners finished the game in double digits with Kristian Doolittle leading the way with 19 points.

austin reaves is a walking heat check

Austin Reaves is really going to hurt an opposing fan base one day. The transfer from Wichita State was 5-9  from three point range, finishing the game with 17 points and one rebound.

KRISITAN DOOLITTLE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE

In his second game back from suspension for playing in an unsanctioned summer league (a suspension in which ESPN commentator, Jay Bilas ripped the NCAA for), Doolittle looked like he does when he plays to his full ability.

Doolittle was the Sooners’ leading scorer and rebounder with 19 points and a career high, 16 boards. Six of those points came from deep as Doolittle tickled both times he shot behind the arc.

Aside from his 19 and 16 efforts, Doolittle also had three assists in his 32 minutes.

FULL TEAM WIN

Not just the starters got in on the action. Kur Kuath, Jalen Hill, Victor Iwuakor and Alondes Williams all posted stats against the Beavers. For what they lacked with their 18 combined points, they made up for in play that be kept with numbers. The Sooners kept Oregon State relatively quiet, forcing the Beavers on multiple minute-long scoreless streaks.

Oklahoma’s next game is Monday, November 18, against William & Mary at the Lloyd Noble Center. The game will be broadcasted on Fox Sports Southwest. Tip-off is set for 6pm CT.
