Browns claim OT Kellen Diesch, sign WR Jalen Camp to 90-man roster

The Browns have added two new faces to their 90-man roster.

The Cleveland Browns have added two new players to their 90-man roster after claiming offensive tackle Kellen Diesch off of waivers and signing wide receiver Jalen Camp.

Diesch, a former undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in 2021, is known for his highly tantalizing athletic profile. He has yet to hang onto a roster, however. Hanging on their practice squad for a year after bouncing from the Miami Dolphins to the Chicago Bears, Diesch was just waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Camp was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round during the 2021 NFL draft, but did not make the final 53-man roster. He was then picked up by the Houston Texans. He was in Houston for two seasons.

As a corresponding move, the Browns have waived kicker Lucas Havrisik from their roster to make room for Camp. This means the Browns will carry just Dustin Hopkins and former fourth rounder Cade York into the offseason at the kicker position.

Panthers sign 11 players to future deals on Monday

The Panthers have signed 11 members of their practice squad to future deals.

Carolina Panthers assistant general manager Dan Morgan began the organization’s transition from Scott Fitterer on Monday.

In addition to signing tight end Stephen Sullivan and defensive linemen Nick Thurman and LaBryan Ray to one-year extensions, the team also brought back 11 practice squad members on future deals.

Here are those 11 players:

The Carolina Panthers brought in a couple of pass catchers to their practice squad on Wednesday—signing big-bodied wideouts Cam Sims (6-foot-5, 214 pounds) and Jalen Camp (6-foot-2, 220 pounds).

Here’s an updated look at the group following their newest additions:

Panthers sign 2 WRs to practice squad on Wednesday

The Panthers signed WRs Cam Sims and Jalen Camp to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers filled a couple of empty spots on their practice squad this afternoon.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Wednesday, the team has added wideouts Cam Sims and Jalen Camp to the group. The two pass catchers now account as the 14th and 15th members of the practice squad, which lost fellow receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas yesterday.

Sims, a University of Alabama product, cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Washington in 2018. The 6-foot-5, 214-pounder recorded five seasons in the nation’s capital, where he reeled in 57 receptions for 804 yards and three touchdowns over 55 games.

He spent the summer with the Las Vegas Raiders and picked up a pair of practice-squad stints with the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles released Sims on Tuesday.

Camp, a former sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, played five games for the Houston Texans between 2021 and 2022. The 25-year-old was most recently a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad.

5 players tried out for Broncos on Tuesday, including 2 tight ends

The Broncos brought in five players for tryouts on Tuesday, including a pair of tight ends.

The Denver Broncos brought in five players for tryouts on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Denver hosted three wide receivers — Kevin Austin, Jalen Camp and Thyrick Pitts — and two tight ends — Noah Togiai and Jake Tonges.

The Broncos are expected to place safety Caden Sterns on season-ending injured reserve with a torn patellar tendon. Once Sterns goes on IR, Denver will have an open spot on the 53-man roster.

One candidate to be called up to the active roster is practice squad wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. If Humphrey is about to be called up to the 53-man roster, Denver might be looking at options to add another WR to the practice squad.

Meanwhile, Broncos tight end Greg Dulcich is expected to miss “multiple weeks” with a hamstring injury. That likely explains why Denver is looking for more depth options at tight end.

See a list of the team’s tryout players below.

Texans sign WR Jalen Camp to reserve/future contract

The Houston Texans signed receiver Jalen Camp to a reserve/future contract.

The Houston Texans have added another young player they would like to work with in 2023.

The Texans announced they signed receiver Jalen Camp to a reserve/future contract on Thursday.

Camp, 23, is a former Jacksonville Jaguars 2021 sixth-round pick from Georgia Tech. Houston signed Camp to the practice squad at the beginning of the 2021 season, and kept him as part of their reserve/future contracts at the end of that season.

The 6-2, 220-pound wideout was waived at the end of preseason in 2022, but Houston signed him to their practice squad. Camp played in two games and caught a pass for seven yards among his 21 offensive snaps and two special teams snaps.

The Texans placed Camp on injured reserve on Dec. 14.

Texans sign QB Jeff Driskel to active roster as part of 4 roster moves

The Houston Texans have signed QB Jeff Driskel to the active roster as part of four total transactions on Wednesday.

The Houston Texans are giving Jeff Driskel a promotion.

The Texans signed the quarterback off the practice squad and added him to the active roster on Wednesday. The move comes after the former San Francisco 49ers 2016 sixth-round pick went 4-6 for 38 yards and a touchdown while carrying seven times for 36 yards in the 27-23 close loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14.

The Texans also signed wideout D.J. Montgomery to the practice squad. The former Cleveland Browns 2019 undrafted free agent has not been with an organization since the Indianapolis Colts cut him on Aug. 22, the second wave of preseason cuts.

Houston also placed receiver Jalen Camp on the practice squad/injured list.

The Texans put offensive lineman Jordan Steckler on the practice squad/designated to return list.

Texans elevate QB Jeff Driskel and WR Jalen Camp from the practice squad

The Houston Texans are elevating QB Jeff Driskel and WR Jalen Camp from the practice squad for Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Houston Texans have designated their two players from the practice squad to be their standard elevations for Week 14’s matchup with the Dallas Cowboys Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at AT&T Stadium.

The Texans will elevate quarterback Jeff Driskel and receiver Jalen Camp to the game day roster.

Houston could especially use Camp as they are down their top two receivers in Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins. Cooks is out with a calf injury while Collins has a foot injury.

Camp was active in Week 9 on Thursday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles and caught one pass for seven yards as part of his 15 offensive snaps.

Texans WR Jalen Camp embodies team’s ‘family unity’ theme

Houston Texans receiver Jalen Camp has been the embodiment of the team’s new identity of a squad that embraces “family unity.”

All teams around the NFL stick to a common theme that they preach continuously in team meetings, press conferences, television appearances, etc. That theme is “Family Unity.” Players and coaches alike believe that the team is one big cohesive unit.

On Saturday, the Houston Texans got to put that family mantra on display in front of fans in NRG Stadium and those viewing the game on television in their first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints.

Early in the second quarter, the Texans trailed the Saints 7-3. Backup quarterback Jeff Driskel found wide receiver Jalen Camp in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown pass.

Camp immediately celebrated by doing rookie wide receiver John Metchie’s celebratory “crane kick,” made famous in the first Karate Kid movie and mastered by Metchie when he played at Alabama.

“Quarterback (Driskel) threw a great ball, and I just tried to make a play for him,” said Camp at his press conference on Monday. “Then afterwards, I think all the guys in the receiving room decided that the very first touchdown that we had was going to be the crane celebration for Metchie for everything that he’s going through and just pay homage.”

Metchie was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia before the Texans began their 2022 Training Camp. After being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Metchie missed rookie minicamp and OTAs. Houston wanted to ensure that he had fully recovered from the ACL tear he suffered in last year’s Southeastern Conference Championship Game.

Linebacker Blake Cashman was unaware of what was taking place when Camp scored the touchdown in the second quarter but thought it was pretty cool to honor Metchie in that way.

“I thought that was really cool,” said Cashman. “It was a special thing to do to honor him. I didn’t even catch that until after the game. But I said something to him, I think that just shows how close this group is and how much we appreciate each other in this locker room.”

Camp echoed those sentiments as he spoke about how the team wants Metchie to know they are there with him in this battle.

“We just keep him in our prayers every day and just reach out periodically and just check in on him, make sure he still feels as a part of this team, that he is still a part of this team,” Camp said. “So just little things like that, and then of course the celebration helped, as well, and we’ll definitely try to continue to do that just to pay homage for him because he’s definitely still on our team and still with us.”

Houston Texans WR Jalen Camp honors John Metchie after preseason touchdown

Texans’ receiver strikes the Crimson Crane in support of John Metchie

Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver, John Metchie III, was selected in the second round, No. 44 overall, in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. It was the perfect landing spot as Metchie would see valuable minutes as a rookie until he received some of the most devastating news of the offseason.

In July, Metchie announced he had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and would be missing the entirety of his rookie campaign. Although, this is much bigger than football.

This past Saturday, the Texans played their first preseason game of the year officially kicking off their 2022 campaign. Texans’ second-year receiver, Jalen Camp, made the gesture of the season by honoring Metchie after scoring a touchdown by striking Metchie’s famous Crimson Crane kick pose.

We hope for Metchie’s speedy recovery & Roll Tide.
