Jaleel McLaughlin’s preseason rise did not surprise Broncos’ coaches

After watching him at camp, Broncos coaches knew Jaleel McLaughlin would succeed in preseason. “It wasn’t anything that surprised us.”

Denver Broncos undrafted rookie running back Jaleel McLaughlin dominated in preseason and won a spot on the team’s 53-man roster.

After the Broncos set their initial roster last week, general manager George Paton spoke about the process of McLaughlin going from joining the team in May to becoming a roster lock in August.

You start recruiting these guys early in the process, especially the guys that aren’t going to get drafted,” Paton said of signing undrafted free agent. “It’s part of the interview process. We thought he was a good player. We didn’t quite know what we were getting. You never know with [college] free agents and what you’re quite getting. He went to two schools, obviously.

“The tape was good, but we’ve had a lot of those guys over the years when they come in here [and don’t pan out]. He passed every test. From the minute he showed up in rookie minicamp, it wasn’t too big. Then he’s working out with the big boys on varsity. It wasn’t too big. Then we get the pads on, and he makes plays every day. We were really not surprised [in preseason]. We were all looking forward to the first game to see what he could do, and he made plays every game.”

McLaughlin led the team with 113 rushing yards in preseason on 21 carries (5.38 yards per tote) and he led the NFL with four touchdowns. Denver’s staff wasn’t surprised to see that kind of production after the running back’s impressive summer.

Broncos coach Sean Payton knew McLaughlin would be on a 53-man roster after the team’s preseason opener.

“In San Francisco when the game ended, I knew he was on track to be on our team or someone else’s if we chose not to put him on our roster,” Payton said. “I think that was a big game for him. I said this — and you guys have watched the practices — it wasn’t anything that surprised us. We had seen it. To his credit, it was pretty consistent.”

McLaughlin is now set to serve as the team’s third-string running back this season behind starter Javonte Williams and primary backup Samaje Perine. He will make his NFL debut when Denver hosts the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1.

Brian Baldinger says Broncos might have found gold in Jaleel McLaughlin

“Did Sean Payton and the Broncos find [undrafted] free agent gold in running back Jaleel Mclaughlin?”

Jaleel Mclaughlin was by far the big winner of Denver Broncos preseason this summer.

The undrafted rookie running back out of Youngstown State led the team with 113 rushing yards on 21 carries (5.38 yards per tote) and led the NFL with four touchdowns in three preseason games. He also hauled in seven receptions for 33 yards.

After his impressive summer, McLaughlin made the Broncos’ 53-man roster and he has caught the eye of NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger.

Baldinger shared a short video breakdown of McLaughlin’s performance in Denver’s preseason finale on Twitter (now called X).

“Did Sean Payton and the Broncos find [undrafted] free agent gold in running back Jaleel McLaughlin?” Baldinger asks as the video begins. “Because when I watch him run, he knows exactly where daylight is, and he knows how to get there. And he’s got the quick feet to make it happen.”

Baldinger showed examples of the speedy rookie running between the tackles and making plays in space. Nate Tice of Yahoo! Sports also posted a cut-up from some of McLaughlin touches against the Los Angeles Rams:

He is a dynamic player, one who will be fun to watch this season.

Broncos’ lopsided win over Rams was historic

The Denver Broncos made history in their 41-0 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.

The Denver Broncos’ 41-0 win over the Los Angeles Rams was a historic one for the team, and for one player individually.

1: The Broncos’ 41-0 win was the franchise’s 10th shutout all-time, and first since 2016 (a 22-0 win over the Chicago Bears).

2: The 41-point victory was the second-largest margin of victory in franchise history. The largest margin of victory came against the Seattle Seahawks in 1976, a 52-7 win.

3: In preseason NFL history, it has been nearly 20 years since a team won in such convincing fashion. The most recent was in 2008 was when the Carolina Panthers beat Washington 47-3, and the most lopsided shutout since the New England Patriots beat Washington 41-0 in 2006.

4: The game was also historic for Jaleel McLaughlin. When he scored a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter, it marked his fourth score in the preseason (three rushing, one receiving). His four touchdowns marked the most scores by a Bronco in a single preseason since 1999.

Hopefully this level of success transfers to the 2023 regular season, when the Broncos look to record their first winning season since the Super Bowl 50-winning team.

Broncos stock up/down: Risers and fallers after final preseason game

Albert Okwuegbunam headlines the list of Broncos players with rising stock following the team’s preseason finale.

The Denver Broncos finally secured a win on Saturday night, a 41-0 shutout of the Los Angeles Rams in the final preseason game. Although it won’t show up in the official standings, it marked head coach Sean Payton’s first win as Broncos head coach. Today, we take a look at five stocks that went up through the game (no stock down this week).

5 takeaways from Broncos’ 41-0 drubbing of Rams

Here are our takeaways from the Broncos’ win over the Rams on Saturday.

The Denver Broncos finally won their first game in 230 days with a 41-0 blowout of the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday. The victory gave head coach Sean Payton his first win as a Bronco, which is a nice milestone to achieve, especially in front of a home crowd. Today, we look at five takeaways from the win.

Broncos dominate Rams 41-0 in preseason finale

Following their preseason finale, the Broncos will now turn their attention toward finalizing a 53-man roster.

The Denver Broncos dominated the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason finale on Saturday night, winning 41-0 at Empower Field at Mile High.

Rams cornerback Tre Tomlinson was ejected for a facemask on Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims on Denver’s opening drive and rookie running back Jaleel McLaughlin then scored on a one-yard run to make it 7-0. That score marked McLaughlin’s fourth touchdown of preseason.

Later in the first quarter, kicker Brett Maher converted a 46-yard field goal to make it 10-0. His ensuing kickoff then went out of bounds. Maher has had a somewhat inconsistent preseason and he isn’t a lock to make the team’s Week 1 roster.

Later in the first quarter, quarterback Jarrett Stidham found tight end Albert Okwuegbunam for an 8-yard touchdown to make it 17-0. Stidham had a strong performance, finishing the game 17-of-28 passing for 236 yards with one score and no turnovers.

Broncos running back Tony Jones added a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to extend the lead to 24-0. Maher later converted a second field goal to make it 27-0 before halftime.

In the fourth quarter, running back Tyler Badie added a one-yard touchdown to make it 34-0. Later, third-string quarterback Ben DiNucci connected on a three-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Josh Hammond to make it 41-0.

On defense, Essang Bassey secured his third interception of preseason, which will undoubtedly improve his chances of making the team. Rookie linebacker Drew Sanders also grabbed an interception (he then fumbled the ball, but Denver recovered). The defense had a great game overall, securing a shutout at home.

With preseason now in the rearview mirror, attention will turn to roster cuts. The Broncos have to finalize an initial 53-man roster by Tuesday afternoon. After the roster is set, Denver will begin preparing for a Week 1 showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 10.
