How many former Penn State football players are still in the transfer portal?

The transfer portal cycle closed with these former Penn State football players still officially in the transfer portal.

The start of a new college football season is beginning to creep up on us already with the countdown to kickoff for Penn State recently entering double digits. Penn State has added a number of key players to the roster out of the transfer portal since the close of the 2023 season, and it has seen its share of players choose to leave the program through the portal. Some are still mulling their future plans while sitting in the transfer portal as the summer season is ushered in over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

As of now, there are three players from Penn State’s roster last season sitting in the transfer portal without a commitment for another program officially on the board. Those players are offensive lineman Golden Israel-Achumba and defensive linemen Davon Townley and Jake Wilson. With the transfer portal cycle now closed, these four players will have to wait until after the 2024 season to continue their college football careers. Of course, it is possible these players do have commitments made that have not surfaced yet for one reason or another.

Israel-Achumba announced he entered the transfer portal in early May and confirmed he will have two years of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer from Penn State.

It is important to remember that players can still withdraw their names from the transfer portal if they choose to remain at their current school. In the case of Davon Townley, that is exactly what he did a year ago. Townley explored his options in the transfer portal a year ago before ultimately deciding to remain at Penn State. But now that he has entered the portal a second time, it seems unlikely he will make the same decision again.

Wilson’s social media feed has only mentioned an offer from Akron, where former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead is the head coach.

Former Penn State offensive lineman Ibrahim Traore still shows up as a player in the transfer portal according to a couple of the major recruiting sites. But a recent report from Daily Collegian says Traore has committed to Toledo.

Penn State football transfer portal tracker

The transfer portal is open. Stay on top of every Penn State transfer coming and going with our updated tracker.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Sure, the holiday season is in full swing, but the transfer portal for college football is officially open, and Penn State will once again look to be active in the portal activity in an attempt to bolster a couple of positions in need of improvement.

Of course, a number of players on the football roster will take this opportunity to explore some other opportunities to find a new environment that will allow them to embrace a fresh start, pursue more playing time with another program, or simply just move closer to home.

The first day of the transfer portal being open led to a couple of Penn State players entering their names in the transfer portal. And we are ready to keep track of all of the transfer portal activity this month.

The transfer portal opened on Dec. 4, 2023 and closes on Jan. 2, 2024. Here is a look at the latest developments with the portal and Penn State with a review of what players are currently in the transfer portal, who has committed elsewhere, and what players are coming to Penn State out of the portal.

Penn State defensive end Jake Wilson enters transfer portal

Penn State had another player enter his name in the transfer portal.

Penn State continues to keep its eyes on the transfer portal for players that may be able to help the program fix some areas of concern in 2024. At the same time, the portal remains open for any Penn State player looking to find a new situation for his future. On Tuesday, defensive end [autotag]Jake Wilson[/autotag] announced he is taking advantage of that transfer portal for his remaining eligibility.

“I’ve had a great four years at Penn State and it will always be a home and a family to me but after graduating this fall I have decided to continue on to the next stage in my career,” Wilson said in a brief statement shared on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account on Tuesday afternoon. “I have entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility and my recruitment is now open.”

Wilson appeared in eight games for the Nittany Lions during the 2023 season, mostly on special teams assignments. He also appeared in each of Penn State’s 13 games played in 2022, again mostly on special teams. Wilson was an academic All-Big Ten player in 2021 and 2023 and he received multiple developmental squad player of the week honors from the coaching staff during his time with the program.

Wilson joined the Penn State program in the Class of 2020. Wilson used his redshirt season in 2021 but is eligible for an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA for being impacted by the COVID-19 season of 2020.

Where Wilson ends up next will be anyone’s guess at this point in time. We’ll keep an eye on his next steps and update our transfer portal tracker accordingly when more information becomes available.

2023 Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 94 Jake Wilson

Former walk-on Jake Wilson provides veteran depth at defensive end for Penn State in 2023.

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Continuing this effort is a look at one of Penn State’s veteran walk-on defensive linemen, [autotag]Jake Wilson[/autotag]. Wilson was an in-state player who joined the program over opportunities to play in the Ivy League and for Army. Here is a snapshot look at Wilson entering the 2023 college football season.

Georgia football player card: DB Jake Wilson

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Jake Wilson’s dad, Chad, also played football for the University of Georgia.

Jake Wilson, defensive back (No. 46):

Class: Redshirt freshman

Height: 5-9

Weight: 175 pounds

Hometown: Acworth, Georgia

High School: Mt. Paran High School

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Jake Wilson walked on to the football team in 2019. He took a redshirt last season and primarily served as a scout team player.

Wilson was an All-State selection in high school at Mount Paran. His dad, Chad, also played at Georgia under Ray Goff.

Georgia is stacked in the secondary headed into next season. The Dawgs have Eric Stokes, DJ Daniel, Tyson Campbell, Kelee Ringo, Divaad Wilson, Mark Webb, and more at cornerback.

Georgia’s defense may be the best in the nation next season. The passing defense has more room to improve, but much of that falls on Georgia’s pass rush, which was middle of the pack (in terms of sacks) last season. The Dawgs had the best run defense in the country in 2019.

Dan Lanning and company had a stifling defense last season and the Dawgs may be even better in 2020. They’ll be fun to watch.

Wilson chose attending the University of Georgia over other local schools like Kennesaw State.
