The top-rated Ohio State kicker recruits since 2000

The top-rated Ohio State kicker recruits since 2000 #GoBucks

We have been diving into some of the more highly touted recruits in Ohio State history. We recently discussed the quarterbacks, running backswide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguardscenterdefensive ends, defensive tacklesinside linebackersoutside linebackerscornerbackssafeties, recruits listed as athletes, and punters.

Even though 247Sports‘ recruiting rankings only go back to 2000, there are some memorable names, but Ohio State has only picked up three big names since the start of the site. The lack of top-tier talent at kicker isn’t all the fault of Ohio State though as highly-ranked kickers are rare.

Ohio State kicker transferring to MAC school

Good luck! Once a Buckeye …

It’s been a bit of an odd career arc for Ohio State kicker Jake Seibert.

When he committed to OSU, he was known as one of the best kickers in the country. He was rated No. 2 in the 2020 class. There were many — coaches included — who thought he was the kicker of the future for the Buckeyes.

When Seibert arrived in Columbus however, his tenure didn’t go according to plan. He made one field goal, a 23-yarder in the national championship game against Alabama in 2020, and was thought to be the main option coming back in 2021. However, Noah Ruggles entered the equation as a transfer from North Carolina and took over the placekicking duties. Seibert made 16 extra points during his time as a Buckeye but was used sparingly.

Now, Seibert is hitting the reset button at Northern Illinois, he announced on social media Tuesday. He has three seasons of eligibility left for a little MACtion magic.

We, of course, wish Seibert nothing but the best at his new school and hope he fulfills the promise he had when he came out of high school.

Ohio State kicker Jake Seibert has entered the transfer portal

With several kickers on the roster, Jake Seibert has decided to move in a different direction. #GoBucks

Ohio State kicker Jake Seibert has entered his name in the transfer portal, according to an announcement on Twitter. Seibert was the No. 2 kicker in the 2020 recruiting class according to 247Sports composite.

The Cincinnati native came to Columbus willing to wait his turn while the Buckeyes relied on Blake Haubeil for the kicking duties. However, Haubeil suffered injuries during the 2020 season that forced Seibert into action. The true freshman performed admirably, converting all 16 extra-point attempts and making one of two field goals on the year.

But if there is one position Ryan Day and the coaching staff have consistently searched for in the transfer portal, it’s been kicker. In 2021, when Seibert could’ve taken the reins, OSU brought in Noah Ruggles from North Carolina. Ruggles had an outstanding two years with the Buckeyes, and Seibert hasn’t attempted a kick for the Buckeyes since 2020.

The coaching staff has continued to bring in new blood at the kicking position. Last year brought the addition of USC transfer Parker Lewis. At the end of 2022, the Buckeyes added walk-on Jayden Fielding and another transfer, Casey Magyar, from Kent State. It is not known who will take over the kicking duties for the departed Ruggles.

Seibert was gracious in his farewell to Buckeye Nation as he looks forward to what’s next on the gridiron.

With Ohio State kicker Blake Haubeil out, who boots it for the Buckeyes?

The Buckeyes will have to turn to either walk-on Dominic DiMaccio or freshman Jake Seibert for kicking duties.

It may not seem like that big of a deal, but any football coach in America will tell you that having a reliable kicker makes life a lot less stressful. Things are no different at Ohio State. Sure, the Buckeyes are scoring touchdowns in droves, but extra points and field goals can make a big difference should OSU find themselves in a close game.

Senior kicker Blake Haubeil is out at least this Saturday night after leaving last week’s game at Penn State with a groin injury. Haubeil had been pretty much automatic before the injury making 24 of 29 FGs over the course of two-plus years and a perfect 131 for 131 on extra points.

The Buckeyes now find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Walk on Dominic DiMaccio came on for the injured Haubeil and made 1 of 2 field-goal tries in Happy Valley. Not horrible, but can he be counted on in high-pressure situations?

Enter freshman, Jake Seibert. We told you Seibert lost his black stripe earlier this week and is now an official member of the football team. Seibert wasn’t originally part of the plan for this year, but it looks like he may be thrust into the spotlight.

Coming from Cincinnati La Salle High School, Seibert was ranked the No. 2 kicker in the nation. Groin injuries can be tricky and with the extent of Haubeil’s injury unknown, it looks like Seibert may get a crack at taking over the reins in the interim.

We shall see.

Kicker Jake Seibert loses his black stripe

Ohio State announced a couple more black-stripe alerts this week. One of those was freshman kicker Jake Seibert who lost his on Wednesday.

We may be in the midst of the 2020 Ohio State football season, but the parade of Buckeye newcomers having their black-stripes removed continues. And … in case you missed it, we are here to continue to bring them to you.

The lastest to shed his black stripe was kicker Jake Seibert on Wednesday. Out of Cincinnati La Salle High School, the 6-foot, 1-inch, 190-pounder was the No. 2 rated kicker in the 2020 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He chose Ohio State over places like Michigan State, UCLA, and Temple.

And he had his moment in the sun this week when he was “officially” welcomed into the brotherhood.

“I just want to thank God for giving me the opportunity,” Seibert said. “Also want to thank the strength staff and coaches. Go Bucks!”

You can watch a moment he’ll remember for the rest of his life by clicking on the below video shared by the official Twitter account of Ohio State Football.
