Oklahoma, Baker Mayfield offer their condolences to the Texas Longhorns and Ehlinger family

Oklahoma athletics and Baker Mayfield offer condolences to the Ehlinger family and University of Texas.

When it comes to rivalries in the world of college athletics there are some instances where you push those to the side. This is one of those instances. The Texas Longhorns and the family of Jake Ehlinger received somber news on Thursday. Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman reported that Ehlinger was found dead away from campus.

Our colleagues at Longhorns Wire wrote about the terrible news that rocked Austin, Texas, on Thursday.

The report stated that a 911 call was placed in the middle of the day at 12:18 p.m. CDT, where police arrived at the corner of the 1200 block of West 22nd Street. No cause of death has yet been disclosed, and his death has not been considered suspicious.

Jake has been part of the program with Sam the last two seasons where they were often seen standing together on the Texas sidelines during games. A strong, brotherly bond that fed off one another during their time together.

Baker Mayfield has been vocal about his feelings about the University but he was all class with his tweet to Jake’s brother Sam, who was just drafted by the Indianapolis Colts.

The official Twitter account for the Oklahoma Sooners also offered their condolences to their Red River rivals.

We want to offer the Ehlinger family and the Texas Longhorns fanbase our prayers and condolences during this horrific time.

Baker Mayfield offers condolences to the Ehlinger family after the death of Jake

On Friday, the Texas/OU rivalry was put to the side. Baker Mayfield reached out to Sam Ehlinger after the tragic death of Jake Ehlinger.

Nobody loves to trash talk the University of Texas more than former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. The former Heisman Trophy winner went 2-1 in the Red River Shootout and took the game personally.

On Thursday evening, the heated rivalry was put to the side. Mayfield played high school football in the Austin area before playing in Norman.

Brian Davis of the Austin American Stateman was the first to report on the tragic death of Texas linebacker Jake Ehlinger. Jake was the younger brother of former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Both were a part of the program over the past two years.

Mayfield reached out to Sam via Twitter, saying “prayers up for you and your family man, @sehlinger3. Extremely sorry for your loss. City of Austin is here for y’all.”

Mayfield and Sam Ehlinger’s on-the-field rivalry goes past Texas-Oklahoma. The two went to rival high schools within the city of Austin. Mayfield went to Lake Travis while the Ehlinger brothers went to Westlake.

At the end of the day, football rivalries mean little to none compared to off-the-field events. Seeing such a prominent figure from Oklahoma like Mayfield speaks to how everyone respects each other.

Longhorns Wire will remain on top of the story and provide updates as they are made available. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Ehlinger family during this horrific time.

“It’s very sad and tragic news that we received this afternoon during such an exciting time for the family, and our hearts and prayers are with the whole family,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement. “I know how close they were and we’re just really stunned, but we are prayerful and we know God has a plan. We are doing everything we can to console the family and do what we can to make things as easy as possible at this difficult time.”

The Colts confirmed to NFL media that they took care of his travel accommodations to get back to Austin.

“There are no magic words in these moments, but all we can do is be there to love and support Sam,” Colts head coach Frank Reich said in a statement. “We will do everything we can. With Sam, our thoughts and prayers are with him and his mother and his sister as they mourn the tragic death of Sam’s brother, Jake.”

Austin police didn’t specify how they found Jake nor what the cause of death was. However, they did say his death is not considered suspicious.

In 2019, Sam talked to reporters after their first game together at UT when they ran out of the tunnel together before playing Louisiana Tech.

“Unreal,” Sam said. “We’ve been dreaming about that our whole lives.”

The Ehlinger family suffered the loss of their father, Ross, who died in 2013 during a triathlon in San Francisco from a heart attack at age 46.
