Packers downgrade CB Jaire Alexander to OUT vs. Giants

There will be no guessing game before the inactive list comes out on Monday night: the Green Bay Packers downgraded cornerback Jaire Alexander from questionable to out for Week 14 vs. the New York Giants.

There will be no guessing game before the inactive list comes out on Monday night: the Green Bay Packers downgraded cornerback Jaire Alexander from questionable to out for Week 14 vs. the New York Giants.

Alexander will miss his fifth consecutive game after injuring his shoulder during a win over the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 5. He had been listed as questionable in four consecutive weeks before his status was changed to out on Sunday.

Alexander, a two-time All-Pro, has played in only five games this season: Week 1 at Chicago, Week 2 at Atlanta, Week 5 at Las Vegas, Week 8 vs. Minnesota and Week 9 vs. Los Angeles. He played 332 defensive snaps, or 95 percent of the defense’s snaps, over the five games.

Alexander has four pass breakups and a tackle for loss in 2023.

The Packers will be expected to start rookie Carrington Valentine and Corey Ballentine on the perimeter at cornerback with Keisean Nixon in the slot against the Giants.

Alexander joins receiver Christian Watson as the two players ruled out for the Packers. Linebacker Quay Walker is doubtful to play, and three others are questionable.

Packers CB Jaire Alexander inactive vs. Chiefs on SNF

Packers CB Jaire Alexander will miss a third consecutive game and a seventh game overall in 2023. He is inactive vs. the Chiefs.

The Green Bay Packers will be without All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander on Sunday night against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. A lingering shoulder injury will force Alexander, who is inactive in Week 13, to miss a third consecutive game and seventh game overall this season.

Alexander injured his shoulder in Week 9 vs. the Rams and hasn’t played since. Even a mini-bye following the Packers’ win on Thursday of last week wasn’t enough for him to get game ready.

There is some good news. Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, receiver Jayden Reed, safety Darnell Savage, receiver Dontayvion Wicks, safety Rudy Ford and cornerback Robert Rochell are all active despite being listed as questionable.

Here are the Packers’ inactives for Week 13:

CB Jaire Alexander
RB Aaron Jones
LB Brenton Cox Jr.
T Caleb Jones
TE Josiah Deguara
WR Samori Toure

Jones (knee) was ruled out on Friday. Deguara and Alexander are the only two inactives from a list of eight players who were questionable to play. Cox, Jones and Toure are all healthy scratches.

The Packers will start A.J. Dillon at running back and Carrington Valentine, Corey Ballentine and Keisean Nixon at cornerback. Rookie Henry Pearson was elevated from the practice squad to fill in for Deguara for the second consecutive week.

Chargers’ reasons for optimism vs. Packers

Here is why the Chargers could beat the Packers on Sunday.

In the midst of a rollercoaster season, even by Los Angeles’ usual standards, the Chargers travel to one of the most iconic locations in football on Sunday.

Here are four reasons to be optimistic that LA will leave Lambeau Field with a win.

Packers CB Jaire Alexander returns to practice on Thursday

The Green Bay Packers might get a big boost in the secondary ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen and the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Green Bay Packers might get a big boost in the secondary ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Per Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com, cornerback Jaire Alexander returned to practice for the first time since injuring his shoulder in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Alexander, a two-time All-Pro, was out during Wednesday’s practice. His return Thursday opens the door to him playing Sunday in a huge matchup against Allen, who leads the NFL in catches (73) this season.

If Alexander can’t go, the Packers would be forced to play rookie Carrington Valentine and Corey Ballentine on the perimeter against Herbert, one of the NFL’s leaders in passer rating in 2023.

The Packers will practice again Friday before putting out a final injury report with playing status designations later Friday afternoon. It’s possible Alexander will now be no worse than a questionable player for Sunday.

Per Hodkiewicz, safety Rudy Ford missed a second straight practice with a biceps injury.

The Packers returned linebacker Quay Walker to practice on Wednesday. If both Walker and Alexander can play, the Packers will be close to 100 percent on defense come Sunday.

Packers inactives: Jaire Alexander, Quay Walker OUT vs. Steelers

The Packers will be without two starting defenders, but all 5 players listed as questionable, including three players along the OL, are active vs. the Steelers.

The Green Bay Packers will be without cornerback Jaire Alexander and linebacker Quay Walker on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but all five players listed as questionable on the final injury report are active and will play.

Alexander (shoulder) and Walker (groin) were both doubtful after missing practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Expect the Packers to start Corey Ballentine opposite Carrington Valentine at cornerback and Isaiah McDuffie at linebacker.

Alexander, who is over a back injury but his his shoulder against the Rams, will miss a fourth game in the Packers’ last seven. Walker is missing his second consecutive game after tweaking his groin late in the week last week.

While the Packers will be without two top defenders, the inactive list brought some good news: defensive lineman Kenny Clark, center Josh Myers, right guard Jon Runyan Jr., left tackle Yosh Nijman and safety Rudy Ford are all active despite questionable listings.

The Packers’ other three inactive players are all healthy scratches.

Packers inactive list vs. Steelers:

LB Quay Walker
CB Jaire Alexander
LB Brenton Cox Jr.
T Caleb Jones
WR Samori Toure

Steelers inactive list:

QB Mason Rudolph
CB Darius Rush
S Minkah Fitzpatrick
RB Godwin Igwebuike
DT Montravius Adams
T Dylan Cook
NT Breiden Fehoko

Steelers vs Packers: Green Bay could be down 2 key defensive starters

The Steelers and Packers are going to be shorthanded on defense this week.

We already know the Pittsburgh Steelers will be quite shorthanded on defense this week with Minkah Fitzpatrick, Montravius Adams and Cole Holcomb all absent. The Green Bay Packers could also be down two of their best defensive players as well.

The Packers listed starting linebacker Quay Walker and starting cornerback Jaire Alexander as doubtful this week. Walker currently leads the Packers with 66 tackles and is the team’s primary run-stuffer. With the Steelers starting to focus on the run game, not having Walker on the field is a huge plus for Pittsburgh.

Alexander is the Packers top coverage player and if he cannot go it will complicated this for Green Bay in trying to slow down wide receivers Diontae Johnson and George Pickens. Pickens is in a slump for the last two games and not having Alexander on the field might be just the slump buster he needs.

The Packers also have the following players listed as questionable:

DL Kenny Clark

S Rudy Ford

OL Josh Myers

OT Yosh Nijman

OT Jon Runyan

Packers CB Jaire Alexander, LB Quay Walker miss full week of practice

Packers CB Jaire Alexander and LB Quay Walker both missed all three practices this week and must be considered unlikely to play vs. the Steelers.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander and linebacker Quay Walker were both unavailable for all three practices this week and are unlikely to play Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.,

The Packers listed the pair as doubtful for Week 10.

Alexander, the team’s top cornerback, is dealing with a shoulder injury suffered during last week’s win over the Los Angeles Rams. Walker, the standout second-year linebacker, felt tightness in his groin last Friday, missed the win over the Rams and hasn’t practiced since.

The Packers are already thin at cornerback after trading away starter Rasul Douglas at the trade deadline. If Alexander can’t go, the Packers would start Keisean Nickel at the nickel and rookie Carrington Valentine on the perimeter with either Corey Ballentine or Robert Rochell — who were both signed from practice squads last week — opposite Valentine on the outside.

The situation at linebacker is far less concerning. Isaiah McDuffie has made four starts already this season and has already set a new career-high in tackles (46). He would start next to 2021 All-Pro De’Vondre Campbell if Walker can’t play.

Safety Darnell Savage is still on injured reserve, so the Packers would be without four preferred Week 1 starters — Savage, Alexander, Walker and Douglas — if both Alexander and Walker can’t play Sunday. Green Bay’s defense held the Rams to just three points despite not having Savage, Douglas, Walker and safety Rudy Ford (and Kenny Clark for the second half) last week.

The Packers will release a full and final injury report with playing status designations later on Friday. It’s possible Matt LaFleur will rule out both Alexander and Walker when he meets with the media following practice Friday.

Packers CB Jaire Alexander active vs. Vikings in Week 8

All 4 players list as questionable, including CB Jaire Alexander, are active for Sunday against the Vikings.

The Green Bay Packers have available all four of the players listed as questionable on the final injury report for Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, center Josh Myers and tight end Luke Musgrave are all active for the Packers in Week 8.

Alexander (back) must help the Packers contain rookie receiver Jordan Addison. Campbell (ankle) is part of the coverage plan on tight end T.J. Hockenson. Myers (ankle) will direct traffic against a blitz-heavy defense. Musgrave (ankle) should be a primary target in the passing game.

The Packers’ inactive list is five healthy scratches: receiver Malik Heath, cornerback Robert Rochell, safety Zayne Anderson, edge rusher Brenton Cox Jr. and offensive tackle Caleb Jones.

The Vikings made cornerback Najee Thompson, running back Kene Nwangwu, linebacker Brian Asamoah, tight end Nick Muse, guard Ezra Cleveland and offensive tackle Hakeem Adeniji inactive. The big one is Cleveland, a starter at left guard. Veteran Dalton Risner is the expected replacement.

How did Packers CB Jaire Alexander hurt his back, and will he play vs. Vikings?

Packers CB Jaire Alexander hurt his back during a September practice, but he’s hoping to play Sunday against the Vikings.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander has missed three of the last four games and is now questionable to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a mysterious back injury that has lingered for over a month.

While coach Matt LaFleur provided no extra details regarding the injury on Friday, Alexander was willing to shed some light on how the injury happened during a late September practice.

Per Paul Bretl of Packers Wire, Alexander and third-string quarterback Alex McGough — who is on the practice squad but doubles as a tight end on the scout team — collided mid-air during a practice snap in the lead-up to the Packers’ Week 3 showdown with the New Orleans Saints.

“We collided in midair, honestly,” Alexander said. “I don’t know how the third string QB and the starting corner collide, but hey, no one did nothing wrong, I should say. It’s his fault though.”

Alexander missed back-to-back games against the Saints and Detroit Lions, fought through pain to return and face former Packers receiver Davante Adams in Week 5 and then dealt with a flare up coming out of the bye last week and missed a third game in five weeks against the Denver Broncos.

“What I got going on is not like a regular type of thing. But I’m also not going to speak about it with y’all. It’s just something I’ve got to manage,” Alexander said.

LaFleur said Alexander will be a game-time decision Sunday. Alexander said the plan is to play but it will depend on how he feels come Sunday morning.

“Yeah, pretty much. Get moving around and see how everything feels,” Alexander said. “But that’s the plan.”

The Vikings will be without All-Pro Justin Jefferson on Sunday, but first-round pick Jordan Addison has a touchdown in five of his first seven NFL games and is coming off a seven-catch, 123-yard performance against the San Francisco 49ers last week.

Packers CB Jaire Alexander misses practice with back injury, considered day to day

Packers CB Jaire Alexander (back) missed practice on Thursday, and he’s considered “day to day.”

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander missed practice on Thursday with a lingering back injury and is considered “day to day,” according to coach Matt LaFleur.

“I really don’t have a lot to say on it. I’m certainly not an expert on backs and don’t want to pretend to be,” LaFleur said Thursday.

LaFleur dismissed a question on if Alexander, a two-time All-Pro, suffered a setback.

Alexander returned to practice as a limited participant on Wednesday, but his absence Thursday suggests he’s in trouble of missing another game. The Packers host the Justin Jefferson-less Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Alexander has missed three of the last four games after injuring his back in the lead up of the Packers’ Week 3 showdown with the New Orleans Saints. Alexander returned to play against Davante Adams and the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5 but missed last week’s loss in Denver coming out of the bye week.

The volatile nature of the injury could mean it’s something Alexander must deal with throughout the 2023 season. Any kind of back issue would be difficult to overcome for a cornerback that must make quick, twisting movements as a job requirement.

The Packers will practice again and release a final injury report on Friday. Alexander was questionable to play last week and ended up being inactive.

If Alexander can’t go on Sunday, the Packers would have Rasul Douglas, Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine and Corey Ballentine as the defense’s top four cornerbacks. Eric Stokes went on injured reserve on Wednesday.
