The Alabama Crimson Tide picked up their second big win on Tuesday when the men’s basketball team defeated the Florida Gators, 86-71, to move to 8-3 on the season, including a 3-0 mark in SEC play.

Earlier in the evening, Crimson Tide football star DeVonta Smith won the Heisman Trophy.

Heading into Tuesday’s meeting with the Gators on the hardwood, both teams entered with an undefeated record in the SEC. The Crimson Tide controlled this game from the start and went into halftime with a 39-32 lead.

The second half looked like it would be a different story as the Gators got off to a 7-0 run to tie the game. Alabama didn’t flinch and went on a 12-2 run to give the Tide a 10-point lead for which Florida would never recover.

Three players tied for the team lead in scoring as Herbert Jones, Jaden Shackelford and Keon Ellis had 16 points apiece. Ellis came off the bench to give head coach Nate Oats a spark and led the team with eight rebounds.

Forward James Rojas also came off the bench for Alabama and scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Guard John Petty chipped in with 12 points for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama was without starting guard Jahvon Quinerly, who missed the game with an undisclosed condition.

The Crimson Tide broke an eight-game losing streak to Florida and starts a conference season 3-0 for the first time since 1986-87.

This was a big win for Alabama coming off an upset win at No. 7 Tennessee on Saturday.

Next up for the SEC-leading Crimson Tide is a trip to Auburn on Saturday.

To make matters worse, Alabama’s defense wasn’t good either.

Sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly led the Tide with 14 points and was six of 11 from the field.

Jaden Shackelford chipped in 10 with points; however, he struggled from the field, making just three of his 13 field-goal attempts.

After the loss, Alabama now moves to the bracket’s consolation side, where it will face UNLV on Tuesday, which was blown out by North Carolina.

Alabama basketball target Jordan Bruner sets commitment time, date

Alabama basketball target Jordan Bruner will make his college decision on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET.

As of late, the Alabama basketball program has been on a tear when it comes to its 2020 recruiting class.

Within the last two weeks, the Crimson Tide have added three commitments, including five-star guard Josh Primo, four-star guard Keon Ellis and three-star forward Darius Miller.

Now, head coach Nate Oats and company have their sights set on Yale graduate transfer Jordan Bruner, who has already narrowed down his list to three schools: Baylor, Maryland and, of course, Alabama.

In addition, the 6-foot-9 versatile forward from Columbia (S.C.) told Tyler DeLuca that he would be making his announcement on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. CT).

As of right now, it looks like Baylor and Alabama are in the lead, but anything can happen between now and Bruner’s announcement time tomorrow.

Bruner averaged an impressive 10.9 points and 9.2 rebounds for Yale last season while also averaging 3.8 assists and 1.7 blocks.

That versatility, in addition to being able to run the floor, finish at the rim and be effective beyond the three-point arc, would make Bruner a valuable and dangerous addition to an already impressive roster in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide will also have other new key additions to its 2020 on-court rotation in Jahvon Quinerly, Juwan Gary and James Rojas, making this team a strong candidate to make a push for a NCAA Tournament bid — and beyond.

Stay tuned for more information on Bruner’s recruitment from Roll Tide Wire!

Two Alabama basketball players will test NBA waters

It looks like Kira Lewis Jr. and John Petty will test the NBA waters, according to Alabama head coach Nate Oats.

Alabama sophomore Kira Lewis Jr. and junior John Petty will give the 2020 NBA Draft process a go, according to a quote Cecil Hurt heard from Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats on Tuesday.

Hurt shared the news to his Twitter account while also adding that Oats stated that it would be a “pleasant surprise” if either player returned:

Losing both Lewis and Petty would be a major blow to Alabama, as that combination was two of the team’s top three scorers from last season. As if that wasn’t enough, they were also the Tide’s top two three-point shooters.

There is a silver lining, however.

Former five-star point guard Jahvon Quinerly, who transferred from Villanova prior to the 2019-20 season, will be eligible next season after having his waiver denied by the NCAA.

On top of that news, JUCO transfer James Rojas and former four-star Juwan Gary, who was Alabama’s top recruit in the 2019 class according to Rivals.com, will be back from season-ending injuries this past season.

Combine their presence with standouts Jaden Shackelford and Herb Jones, as well as newcomers such as Keon Ambrose-Hylton, and it’s possible that the Crimson Tide could push for a NCAA Tournament spot in 2020-21.

It would help to have either Lewis or Petty (or both) return, however.

Alabama transfer point guard Jahvon Quinerly will not be suiting up for the Crimson Tide’s basketball team this season. On Monday, the former five-star prospect had his appeal for eligibility denied by the NCAA.

Michael Casagrande with AL.com shared the statement made by the University of Alabama in response while also giving an appropriate rebuttal about the lack of transparency from the NCAA:

In addition, several people, including Quinerly’s mother, took to Twitter to share their displeasure with the NCAA for this decision:

It’s obviously a tough situation for Quinerly, his family and the Alabama basketball program, which was already dealing with multiple season-ending injuries before the season even started.

Quinerly originally signed with Villanova out of high school, but chose to transfer after only one season. He was the nation’s No. 29 overall player, No. 7 point guard and No. 3 player from the state of New Jersey, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Alabama will play its second game of the season on Monday night against Florida Atlantic, which is set to tip off at 7:00 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa.
