Report: Lions snatching LB from Jaguars practice squad

The Detroit Lions plan to sign linebacker Anthony Pittman to their active roster away from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Pittman joined the Jaguars’ practice squad in October after spending the first five seasons of his NFL career with Detroit, where he signed as an undrafted free agent out of Wayne State in 2019. He spent this past offseason with Washington but was released by the Commanders after the preseason in August.

Pittman was elevated to the Jaguars’ active roster for Jacksonville’s Week 11 matchup with Detroit while depth linebacker Yasir Abdullah was out with a hamstring injury. Pittman made one special teams tackle against his former squad.

In 55 games and two starts with the Lions, including the postseason, Pittman recorded 28 total tackles, one defended pass and one forced fumble.

Jacksonville had yet to announce a corresponding move for its practice squad at press time.

The Jaguars made a quintet of practice squad transactions on Wednesday, signing running back Myles Gaskin and offensive linemen Jerome Carvin and Dieter Eiselen to the unit and releasing punter Matt Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington.

Jacksonville had a practice squad opening created Tuesday when the Carolina Panthers signed running back and wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. away from the unit and onto their active roster. The Jaguars practice squad now stands at 17 players.

A seventh-round NFL draft pick by Miami in 2019, Gaskin played for the Dolphins through the 2022 season and has since bounced between practice squads and active rosters with the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams.

Gaskin has logged 364 rushing attempts for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns, and 102 receptions for 712 yards and six touchdowns, in 45 NFL games, including 16 starts.

Carvin and Eiselen each joined Jacksonville’s practice squad in November but were released in recent weeks as the Jaguars made injury-related additions to the unit. Neither was promoted to the team’s active roster for a game during their previous stints.

Eiselen has made 24 appearances in his five-season NFL career; Carvin has not yet appeared in a game.

Haack and Addington’s releases indicate Jacksonville is pleased with the progress of starting punter Logan Cooke (left knee) and long snapper Ross Matiscik (hamstring) in their recovery from lower-body injuries.

Jacksonville added Haack and Addington for insurance last week, but Cooke and Matiscik were able to play against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Jaguars make practice squad moves, add QB John Wolford

The Jaguars made six practice squad moves Tuesday, signing quarterback John Wolford, punter Matt Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington and releasing offensive lineman Jerome Carvin, defensive end Joe Gaziano and cornerback Tyler Hall from the unit.

Wolford, who starred at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville from 2010-14, once held the state of Florida’s all-time high school passing records for yards (10,621) and touchdowns (126). He went on to throw for 8,794 yards with 59 touchdowns and 41 interceptions in four seasons at Wake Forest.

An undrafted free agent in 2018, Wolford originally signed with the New York Jets but was released before the regular season began.

Wolford was drafted by the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football that November and threw for 1,617 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games during the AAF’s lone season.

Wolford re-entered the NFL after the AAF suspended operations in April 2019, signing with the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent four seasons backing up quarterbacks Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. He completed 61-of-104 passes for 626 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions over seven games and four starts.

Wolford signed with Tampa Bay’s practice squad before the 2023 season and joined the Buccaneers active roster last November. He re-signed with the Buccaneers this offseason but was released in August.

Haack joins the Jaguars as an insurance plan for starting punter Logan Cooke, who, according to head coach Doug Pederson, was dealing with soreness in his left knee after Jacksonville’s 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Haack has punted 453 times with a 44.7-yard average in his eight-year NFL career, over four seasons with the Miami Dolphins and one-season stints with the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants. He has pinned 169 punts inside the 20-yard line and recorded 26 touchbacks.

The Giants released Haack on Nov. 5 after he made four appearances for New York, punting 21 times.

Addington returns to Jacksonville after briefly playing for the Jaguars during the 2023 preseason. He has also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Washington Commanders and Miami Dolphins since entering the NFL in 2022. He has appeared in 10 games and recorded one tackle.

Jaguars reunite with long-time OL via practice squad

The Jaguars reunited with long-time Jacksonville offensive lineman Tyler Shatley on Tuesday, signing him to their practice squad and releasing offensive lineman Dieter Eiselen from the unit in a corresponding move.

Now in his 11th NFL season, Shatley originally signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson in 2014 and remained with the team through this preseason.

Shatley re-signed with Jacksonville on a one-year contract in April but was released during the Jaguars’ preseason roster cuts in August. He revealed earlier that month that he intends to retire from the NFL after this season.

Shatley made 145 regular season appearances with the Jaguars through 2023, the fifth-most in franchise history, including a team-record 140 consecutive games played and 51 starts across the offensive line.

He has logged at least one snap at every offensive line position other than right tackle with Jacksonville.

Shatley started at least eight games yearly between the 2020-22 seasons. He also has made five postseason appearances and two playoff starts with the Jaguars.

The Jaguars signed a pair of offensive linemen, Jerome Carvin and Dieter Eiselen, to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Jacksonville released long snapper Peter Bowden and quarterback John Rhys Plumlee from its practice squad in corresponding moves.

Carvin entered the NFL in 2023 as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee, originally signing with Kansas City. He was released from the Chiefs’ injured reserve that September but joined their practice squad this January, only to sign to the Chicago Bears’ offseason roster a week later.

Carvin spent the preseason with the Bears but was waived during 2024 preseason roster cutdowns. He joined the New England Patriots’ practice squad in late August and was released in October.

Eiselen, a native of Stellenbosch, South Africa, signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Yale in 2020. He spent two seasons largely on Chicago’s practice squad but was elevated to the active roster for three games.

Eiselen signed to Chicago’s active roster for the 2022 season and appeared in 11 games. He was released during the 2023 preseason and joined Houston’s practice squad, from which he was promoted to the Texans’ active roster to make 10 appearances.

Eiselen spent time on the Denver Broncos’ and San Francisco 49ers’ practice squads this season, before joining the Jaguars’.

Plumlee, a 2024 undrafted free agent, signed with Jacksonville’s practice squad following August’s preseason cutdowns, shortly after being waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bowden joined the Jaguars’ practice squad last Tuesday.

The Jaguars added two players and let another two go from their practice squad Tuesday, signing offensive lineman Dennis Daley and long snapper Peter Bowden and releasing linebacker Tanner Muse and running back Jake Funk from the unit.

A 2019 sixth-round NFL draft pick by the Carolina Panthers who has since played with the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals, Daley has appeared in 55 games and made 37 starts, 28 at tackle and nine at guard, over six seasons.

Bowden signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin this offseason and was waived during the preseason. He made 39 appearances with the Badgers in college.

Muse signed with Jacksonville’s practice squad in August after spending the preseason with the team. He was elevated to the active roster for three games and recorded one assisted special teams tackle against the Indianapolis Colts.

Funk joined the Jaguars’ practice squad on Oct. 1, was released from the unit last Tuesday and ultimately brought back on Wednesday. He was promoted to Jacksonville’s active roster in Weeks 7-8 but did not appear in either game.

The Jaguars made a few roster moves outside of trading offensive tackle Cam Robinson to the Vikings on Tuesday.

Jacksonville signed offensive lineman Blake Hance to its active roster off its practice squad, signed free agent wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. to the practice squad and released running back Jake Funk from the practice squad, the team announced.

Jacksonville claimed Hance off waivers during the 2022 season and kept him on the active roster through the 2023 campaign. The hybrid tackle/guard was released this preseason and signed to the Jaguars’ practice squad in late August.

Hance has appeared in 26 games with the Jaguars, including one start last season against Baltimore in Week 16. He has played in 50 regular season games in his career, making nine starts, the other eight with the Cleveland Browns.

Jones joins the Jaguars’ practice squad after beginning his career with Chicago, which selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. He caught 12 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown, rushed 19 times for 165 yards and one touchdown and returned 39 kickoffs for 26.7 yards on average over 27 appearances with the Bears.

Funk signed with Jacksonville’s practice squad on Oct. 1 and was elevated to the Jaguars’ active roster for Week 7 against the New England Patriots and Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers. He did not take the field in either contest.

Jaguars make practice squad swap before London trip

The Jaguars make a pair of practice squad moves before their trip to London for Weeks 6-7, signing linebacker Anthony Pittman and releasing safety Andre Chachere from the unit on Monday.

Pittman joins the Jaguars after spending the first five seasons of his NFL career with Detroit, where he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He spent this offseason with Washington but was released in August.

Over 52 games and two starts with the Lions, Pittman recorded 12 total tackles, three quarterback hits, one defended pass and one forced fumble. He logged 1,117 special teams snaps with Detroit.

Jacksonville brought Chachere onto their practice squad on Sept. 12 after placing starting cornerback Tyson Campbell on injured reserve and signing cornerback Tre Flowers to their active roster.

Campbell is eligible for activation from the injured reserve after missing the last four weeks as required by the NFL. Jacksonville has yet to open his 21-day practice window.

Jaguars make three practice squad moves, sign RB, CB

Jaguars make three practice squad moves, sign RB, CB

The Jaguars made three practice squad moves Tuesday, signing running back Jake Funk and cornerback Tyler Hall while releasing undrafted rookie running back Jalen Jackson from the unit, the club announced.

Jacksonville had an opening on its practice squad after signing tight end Josiah Deguara to its active roster Saturday. Jackson’s release created the second necessary vacancy for the Jaguars to sign Funk and Hall.

A seventh-round NFL draft pick by Los Angeles in 2021, from Maryland, Funk appeared in 15 games over one and a half seasons with the Rams before beginning to hop around practice squads, aligning with New Orleans, Indianapolis, Miami, Baltimore and most recently Detroit. He was twice promoted to the Colts’ active roster, in 2022 and 2023.

Over 20 career appearances, Funk has rushed four times for 15 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards. He has also returned four kickoffs for 22 yards on average and recorded three special teams tackles.

Hall went undrafted out of Wyoming in 2020 and signed with Atlanta. He recorded six tackles as a rookie but was waived the next preseason. Claimed by the Rams, he eventually landed on Los Angeles’ practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for four games during the 2021 campaign.

With Las Vegas between 2022-23, Hall appeared in 18 games and made six starts, recording 40 total tackles including two for loss and one sack.

Hall signed with Philadelphia this offseason but landed on the Eagles’ injured reserve, leading to his release with an injury settlement in August. He signed with Seattle’s practice squad last week but was released Saturday.

Jaguars release QB from practice squad

Jaguars release QB from practice squad

Hours after finalizing its initial 2024 practice squad, Jacksonville released quarterback E.J. Perry from the squad on Thursday afternoon, the Jaguars announced.

Perry signed with Jacksonville before its final preseason game against Atlanta last week but was waived from the active roster on Tuesday amid cutdowns to 53 players. He joined the Jaguars’ practice squad Wednesday.

The stint marked Perry’s third with Jacksonville in a reserve role, after originally signing with the club as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and returning last season while starting Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence battled multiple injuries.

Jacksonville brought Perry in after former Jaguars backup C.J. Beathard suffered a groin injury against Tampa Bay in Week 2 of the preseason. Beathard was let go during Tuesday cutdowns as well.

Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke noted Tuesday that, given Beathard was released with an injury settlement, Jacksonville will not be eligible to bring Beathard back in an active roster or practice squad capacity until he is three weeks removed from his injury. Other teams could sign Beathard in that timeframe.

“It was a significant injury and it’s going to keep him away from ball for a while, at least four weeks of the season. Could be longer; could be shorter,” Baalke said. “Depends on how quickly he heals and how the rehab goes, but that’s the timeline right now.”

Meaning, if Jacksonville would like to carry a quarterback on its practice squad for at least the first seven weeks of the season, it will have to be someone other than Beathard, or Perry, seemingly.

Sixteen of Jacksonville’s 17 practice squad spots are now filled.
