Boston gets national praise for their 2024 NBA trade deadline moves

“Phenomenal pickups for the Celtics,” writes The Athletic of Boston’s trade deadline moves.

The Boston Celtics may not have made major moves at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline. But they are still seen as a ball club that the deadline deals they did make served them well, according to a recent article by The Athletic’s Zach Harper. “The Celtics made small moves by acquiring Xavier Tillman Sr. and Jaden Springer, but both of those deals could be exactly what the team needed,” writes The Athletic NBA analyst.

“Boston’s top talent is as good as any team’s, but its overall roster lacked depth,” adds Harper on the pair of moves made by the Celtics ahead of the Feb. 8 limit on trading players this season.

“Springer adds a very active defender on the perimeter,” he suggests. “More importantly, Tillman gives great depth for their interior.”

“He can defend and rebound,” writes Harper of the backup Boston big man. “Tillman can also help keep Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford fresh. Phenomenal pickups for the Celtics.”

Celtics team president Brad Stevens on why Boston added Xavier Tillman, Sr. and Jaden Springer

This is what Stevens had to say about the Celtics’ two deadline additions.

The Boston Celtics added a pair of defensive-minded players to the team’s roster at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, former Memphis Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman, Sr. and ex-Philadelphia 76ers wing Jaden Springer. After the adds, Celtics team president Brad Stevens went on record to explain why Boston elected to trade for those two players specifically.

On Tillman, Stevens said via The Athletic’s Jay King that he “competes, he passes, thinks the game well” and that he has all “the stuff that we’ve been fortunate with the guys we have around our best players, that they brought to the table. He knows how to play. So we’re excited to have him.”

Springer, said Stevens, “is an athlete that can play athletically in the playoffs.”

“But he also has a lot of growing to get better, and he’s committed to that,” suggested the Boston President of Basketball Operations.

“He’s got a long runway ahead. So we’ll see how this year shakes itself out for him. See how it all fits with the team. But he’s a guy that we believe in.”

Why did the Boston Celtics trade for Jaden Springer if the 76ers thought he wasn’t enough for them?

Springer is in the third season of his rookie deal with the Sixers and has struggled offensively while thriving on defense.

The Boston Celtics traded a second round pick for Philadelphia 76ers wing Jaden Springer in their second and final trade before the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline. Springer is in the third season of his rookie deal with the Sixers and has struggled offensively while thriving on defense.

Boston also traded deep reserve wing Dalano Banton to the Portland Trail Blazers for a top-55 protected second round draft pick ahead of the deadline to keep a roster spot open for a potential buyout signing. Why did the Celtics trade for Springer if the 76ers thought he wasn’t enough for them in the coming postseason?

To try to get into the minds of the Celtics’ front office, CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning took some time to talk himself through the trade and the likely reasoning behind it.

Tobias Harris gives thoughts on Sixers sending Jaden Springer to Celtics

Tobias Harris gives his thoughts on the Philadelphia 76ers trading away Jaden Springer to the Boston Celtics.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers made a peculiar decision at the deadline to send third-year guard Jaden Springer to the Boston Celtics for a second-round pick.

It makes sense in the moment. The Sixers are looking to contend for a title, and Springer needs more time to develop. But sending him to a fellow title contender in the East is a bit surprising. Especially, considering everything he has shown in his brief career as having the potential to lock down elite scorers on the defensive end.

Tobias Harris, who has always been a vocal guy and has taken younger players under his wing, gave his thoughts on the Sixers trading Springer and the impact he can have on any team.

“He’s gonna make a great impact,” Harris said. “Sad to see him go. That’s been my young fella ever since Tennessee. He’s gonna be in a great situation over there. I think everybody got to see really how great of a defensive player he’s going to be. Just by us playing last few games he played, but I’m excited to see him get opportunity over there and showcase what he can do.”

Springer’s offensive game still needs substantial work. His 3-point shooting is still a problem when he’s on the floor. Teams don’t pay attention to him from the perimeter and he needs to work on his ball-handling, but defensively, he has so much potential to be an All-Defensive team player in the future.

He also has a work ethic that will help propel him even further in this league.

“Every year he was here, he put in a lot of work, a lot of time to improve his game and made great improvements on it,” Harris finished. “He’s gonna be a very good player in the NBA.”

Celtics team president Brad Stevens on why Boston traded for Jaden Springer

Stevens emphasized that it was the 21-year-old’s defensive acumen that motivated the deal for Boston.

Once the dust from the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline had settled on the day afterward, Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens spoke with the media to shed some light on what the team had done to bolster the ball club ahead of the deadline.

On the Celtics’ decision to trade for Philadelphia 76ers wing Jaden Springer, Stevens emphasized that it was the 21-year-old’s defensive acumen that motivated the deal for Boston. “We had followed Jaden for a while,” Stevens told NBC Sports Boston. “Jaden went from a guy that I was interested in to a guy I was really interested in after our preseason game here when I saw him really defend — like really, really defend.”

“So I watched him a little bit closer. The game against us (in Philly) was an interesting game, I don’t remember that quite as well maybe,” he added.

“But we have been paying attention as we’ve gone into this trade deadline as he’s been playing more, and the matchups he’s had.”

Springer’s game on the other end of the court may be a work in progress. But he is young enough that this aspect of his play could easily still come along in the next few seasons, and has shown flashes of hinting Boston may have just gotten a steal of a deal at the deadline.

On the Boston Celtics trading for Jaden Springer

What do we know about him and what he can bring to the Celtics?

The Boston Celtics have traded for Philadelphia 76ers wing Jaden Springer. What do we know about him and what he can bring to the Celtics? The 6-foot-4 combo guard is a defensive menace, but also still a bit raw at just 21 years old.

With his age aligned with Boston’s younger core on a deal he will be expected to grow into a larger role on the offensive end of the court. Springer’s defensive skills will have him a helpful emergency option should the Celtics need additional wing depth. He won’t play much with the parent club this season in games against tougher opponents, but Boston could give him run againt sub-.500 teams and with the Maine Celtics.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took some to talk about the addition for Boston on a recent episode.
