Texas LB Jaden Hullaby switches positions during spring ball

Texas linebacker Jaden Hullaby is getting an opportunity to try his hand at running back.

It is common to see players switch positions in the hopes of receiving more playing time, as Texas themselves have already experienced a handful of position changes this offseason.

One more was added to that list on Tuesday. Texas linebacker Jaden Hullaby has made the change from defense to offense as Steve Sarkisian told the media that he wanted to give the former three-star a chance at running back.

The Mansfield, Texas native was recruited as a running back, H-back, and linebacker coming out of high school and projected as a better running back than linebacker. However, with the lack of depth at the linebacker position in Austin, he was needed on that side of the ball.

Here is what 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks said about Hullaby as a recruit:

Owns virtually college-ready size for a running back, but has also been recruited as a linebacker and even H-back. Best long-term fit is likely running back, where he possesses outstanding height and frame potential. Experience playing running back and quarterback against strong high school competition. Flashes encouraging close-quarters mobility relative to size to elude the first defender. Owns the size and build for a high-volume role if needed. Presses the line of scrimmage and shows encouraging patience to allow blocks to materialize. Can improve initial explosiveness, as well as top-end speed. May lack home run long speed at the next level. Power Five-caliber athlete who fits best at running back and should become a reliable contributor.

The only thing that is puzzling about the move is that the Longhorns are expected to be somewhat shallow at linebacker again, and are the deepest at running back as they are home to one of the best backfields in the country.

This move could be more about the future of the running back room, but if it is not, Hullaby will certainly have to impress in order to take touches away from Roschon Johnson, Keilan Robinson, and even Johnathan Brooks.
