Passing Out Grades: Report Card for the Sooners vs. West Virginia

The Oklahoma Sooners played another tight one in their 16-13 win over West Virginia, but how did each position group grade out in the week 4 win?

Without ever having thoughts of being a teacher, passing out bad grades doesn’t seem like a fun time. The Oklahoma Sooners won against West Virginia but it wasn’t pretty and most notably one side of the ball struggled immensely.

At the end of the day, a win is a win. However, things must change offensively if the Sooners are to seriously contend for any trophies this season.

Let’s pass out some grades.

Quarterbacks: C-

This grade is the lowest grade I’ve handed out to this position group this year. It needs to be said that all quarterback grades are products of the offensive line play in front of them.

Spencer Rattler’s offensive line was not good but he has also had moments when he answered the call. Rattler, upon further review, missed a few throws that really would have given Oklahoma some chances to open things up.

He’s still struggling to make better decisions throwing vertically. A contested deep ball to wide receiver Michael Woods could have been intercepted had the defensive back not prematurely celebrated.

He threw an interception as he was targeting Drake Stoops late in the first half, focusing on Stoops the entire route and letting the ball float in the air too long.

At times, he continues to not set his plant foot and drive off of it causing balls to sail or not have the accuracy they need.

At the end of the game, he was 6 for 6 and orchestrated the game-winning drive to lead his team down the field and get them in a position to win. He has to be better and Lincoln Riley has to coach him better.

5 questions we’re asking as the Sooners open Big 12 play vs West Virginia

Five questions we’re asking as the Oklahoma Sooners focus their attention on West Virginia.

Big 12 football is officially a go for the Oklahoma Sooners. They navigated a less than stellar non-conference slate with an escape of Tulane, a throttling of Western Carolina and tough rivalry win against long-time foe Nebraska. They’ll start their conference title defense against the Mountaineers of West Virginia under the lights on Saturday night.

Heading into the game, it’s been noted that Oklahoma hasn’t shown themselves to be worthy of the preseason hype as national champions. Whether you agree or disagree, it means nothing as the games now are tough every week. OU has plenty of time to mold themselves into the team that many think can compete against the likes of Georgia and Alabama for the national title. Each game presents their own set of problems and questions.

As the Sooners narrow their focus in on West Virginia, let’s take a look at the five questions we will be asking.

Final thoughts on the Oklahoma Sooners matchup with the Nebraska Cornhuskers

Final thoughts as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to close out their non-conference schedule vs. the Cornhuskers on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff.

The anticipation has come to a head as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers today at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium as part of Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff.

Bob Stoops will be in Norman with Fox and will be honored at halftime for his upcoming College Football Hall of Fame Induction in December. It is fitting that Stoops is in attendance as the former Oklahoma Sooners head coach was on the sidelines the last time these two teams met in the 2010 Big 12 Championship game.

The Oklahoma Sooners take on a Nebraska team that has rebounded well after a week 0 loss to Illinois in the rare opening week conference game. The Cornhuskers have won their last two games against Fordham and Buffalo by an average of 35 points.

Nebraska isn’t the team it once was, but that doesn’t lessen the excitement for this game. Our Sooners Wire Staff feels very confident in the Sooners’ chances to win this game, but some things need to be figured out as the two teams lock up for the first time in more than a decade today.

Passing Out Grades: Report Card for Oklahoma after win vs WCU

How did the Sooners grade out in their 76-0 win over Western Carolina? Check out this week’s positional report card.

After a week of re-evaluation and reflection, the Oklahoma Sooners came out and showed the world that they did not put their best foot forward in game one against Tulane. Tulane played hard for the entirety of the game. However, OU flexed at once and was up 37-14 and eventually took their foot off the gas and allowed the door to be left open for Tulane to come back.

Oklahoma let out some frustration and then some against the Catamounts en route to posting a 76-0 final score. They would narrowly escape, and head coach Lincoln Riley made it known things would be different during their game against Western Carolina. The man did not lie.

There were several aspects of the team that had decent but not spectacular moments in the previous game. After the game in our previous report card, we broke down the grades for those units.

Oklahoma’s Jadon Haselwood, among others return from absence for Baylor game

Oklahoma’s Jadon Haselwood is set to return to action tonight against Baylor along with Jaden Davis, Jon-Michael Terry and LaRon Stokes.

No. 11 Oklahoma returns to action tonight for their final home game of the season against Baylor.

The Sooners had an unplanned bye week last Saturday after their game with West Virginia was postponed back two weeks due to a COVID-19 outbreak among players and coaches on Oklahoma.

As the Sooners and Bears collision approaches at the top of the hour, players are taking the field for pregame warmups and allowing us to see just exactly who is going to be suiting up tonight for Lincoln Riley.

Oklahoma will be getting several key players back who were previously inactive including wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, cornerback Jaden Davis, defensive lineman LaRon Stokes and outside linebacker Jon-Michael Terry.

Haselwood had previously made his return from injury to make his season debut against Kansas, but was inactive for Bedlam two weeks ago.

Davis, a starter in the secondary, will be another welcomed return for the defense along with Stokes and Terry.

The Sooners will kick things off against Baylor at approximately 7:05 p.m. CT at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Oklahoma will be missing WR Jadon Haselwood among other players for Oklahoma State

Oklahoma will be without WR Jadon Haselwood among others tonight in Bedlam as they host Oklahoma State.

As Oklahoma prepares to host Bedlam rival Oklahoma State within the hour, the Sooners will be missing multiple key players tonight.

As Sooners Wire reported earlier today, TE Austin Stogner is out today due to injury. It also was clear in warmups that starting CB Jaden Davis was going to be a no-go this evening as well as backup safeties Bryson Washington and Justin Broiles.

We can now add some more players to that list – including WR Jadon Haselwood who had just made his return from injury two weeks ago against Kansas.

LaRon Stokes and Jon Michael-Terry are the other names that will catch people’s eye as inactives this evening.

There are some players here that Oklahoma will sorely miss, especially Jaden Davis, but given the gloom and doom reported earlier today about the state of the Sooners’ roster – it probably could have been a lot worse.

Bedlam kicks off here soon at 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ABC.

Oklahoma will be without starting CB Jaden Davis for Bedlam against Oklahoma State

Oklahoma starting CB Jaden Davis appears to be inactive for the Sooners’ matchup with Oklahoma State tonight.

Earlier today, Sooners Wire reported that Oklahoma TE Austin Stogner would be inactive tonight for Bedlam due to a lingering injury from the Kansas game two weeks ago.

Now, with the game just around 30 minutes away, players are taking the field for warmups – thus allowing us to see which players are not going to be active tonight.

It seems the Sooners’ secondary may be one unit hit particularly hard this week, as starting CB Jaden Davis along with backup safeties Bryson Washington and Justin Broiles look to be inactive. Broiles is at the stadium, but is on crutches.

Oklahoma has not confirmed or commented on the reasons for the absences or for Broiles’ injury.

When you are facing one of the best receivers in the country in Oklahoma State’s Tylan Wallace, you would really like to have all your guys in the secondary – not having Davis especially is a big blow.

The game is set for 6:30 p.m. CT in Norman and will be broadcast on ABC.

Oklahoma 2020 player card: No. 4 Jaden Davis

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster. Here is No. 4: Jaden Davis

There is a ton of momentum to having a 2020 college football season these days. No definite signs, yet, but the season would start three and a half months from now.

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster.

Here is the No. 4 on Oklahoma’s roster.

Name: Jaden Davis

Number: No. 4

Year: Sophomore

Position: Cornerback

Hometown: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Height/Weight: 5-foot-10, 182 pounds

One of the more promising young players that debuted in 2019 was now sophomore cornerback Jaden Davis. He was one the few recent recruits from the past defensive regime to earn the trust from Alex Grinch and cornerbacks coach Roy Manning.

The St. Thomas Aquinas product was listed as a four-star prospect by Rivals in the 2019 recruiting class. Davis was listed as the No. 24 overall corner and the No. 33 overall recruit in the state of Florida.

He was the second-straight recruit to sign with Oklahoma from the high school powerhouse in south Florida (Nik Bonitto). Davis picked the Sooners over Clemson, Florida and other offers from Clemson and Texas amongst others.

As a freshman in 2019, Davis played in all 14 games and made one start. He made 33 tackles, had one interception and one pass break-up. Davis will compete with Tre Norwood—who is returning from a season-ending injury in 2019—for the starting job vacated by Parnell Motley exhausting his college eligibility.
