Oregon Ducks predicted to be Pac-12’s second-best team in early 2021 basketball rankings

A flurry of offseason moves has Oregon basketball on the map, with many believing they can vie for a Pac-12 title and deep tournament run.

Five years ago, saying that your team was one of the best in the Pac-12 was a lot like bragging about your kid’s third-place finish in the elementary school talent show. Great job, but what are we really doing here?

The past decade for the conference has left a lot to be desired, with a lack of national champions and a select few deep tournament runs marring the Pac-12 as a whole and shedding doubt over the quality of teams. However, a resurgence in March of 2021 has things on the upswing. Impressive showings in the NCAA Tournament from Oregon, USC, UCLA, Oregon State have the conference registering a pulse for the first time in a while, and there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

For the first time in years, there is a belief that some teams out west can actually make noise on the national landscape, and a formidable opponent in March might be coming into form.

Among those teams to be a potential late-season darling is the Oregon Ducks, who are currently riding a high of landing numerous top-ranked transfers, and look to be as talented as any team that coach Dana Altman has ever had.

In his most recent conference rankings, The Athletic‘s Eamonn Brennan picked the Ducks to finish second in the conference, ranked only behind Johnny Juzang and the UCLA Bruins. Here is what Brennan had to say about Oregon:

And, yes, this roster looks unfamiliar. Will Richardson is the most important returner, and he was typically Oregon’s fourth or fifth offensive option; the losses of Chris Duarte (who is going to be a really good pro, just you wait) and Eugene Omoruyi especially will give this group a completely different feel from last season’s. But there will be similarities: With perimeter transfers De’Vion Harmon (Oklahoma), Jacob Young (Rutgers) and Quincy Guerrier (Syracuse), it’s not hard to imagine Oregon’s outside-in offense and matchup zone looks functioning in more or less the same way. The Ducks at their best were a matchup nightmare, a team of four fast 6-foot-5-ish shooters who could smell blood in the water. (Just ask Iowa.) This group will look a bit different in the specifics, but Altman’s ability to trim his team’s weaknesses and accentuate its strengths is a fixture of the Pac-12 men’s game each and every year. He’ll get them humming eventually.

The projected starters of Will Richardson, De’Vion Harmon, Jacob Young, Quincy Guerrier, and Franck Kepnang are impressive, but what the Ducks are bringing off the bench could be even more enthralling.

Rivaldo Soares, a JUCO All-American in 2020, will be joining 5-star prospects N’Faly Dante and Nathan Bittle. Oregon will also have Eric Williams Jr. returning, as well as a potentially dangerous Lok Wur in the paint.

With an impressive mix of size in the middle and speedy shooters on the perimeter, this really is shaping up to be one of the most talented teams that have come through Oregon in quite some time. The pieces may need a little bit of time to fit together in a perfect fashion, but Altman is a master artist who fans should have complete confidence in.

Getting picked to finish second in the Pac-12 is surely encouraging this far ahead of the season, but a deep tournament run seems to be in the cards for Oregon once again.

Kevin O’Sullivan shuts down rumors about leaving for LSU

Rumors swirled that LSU would chase UF coach Kevin O’Sullivan for its vacancy but he released a statement to reaffirm his commitment to UF.

Florida baseball coach Kevin O’Sullivan has withdrawn his name from the running to become the next LSU baseball head coach.

The Gators skipper released a statement Thursday to put rumors of his interest in other head coaching opportunities to rest.

“I am the head coach at the University of Florida and remain fully committed to the Gators program,” he said, according to FloridaGators.com. “This is where I want to be, and I do not have interest in the head coach openings at any other schools. I look forward to continuing to build upon the success this program has experienced over the past 14 years, with the goal of bringing Florida back to the College World Series as we pursue yet another National Championship for Gator Nation.”

Florida made O’Sullivan the highest-paid coach in college baseball after Texas courted UF’s manager after Auggie Garrido retired.

The Tigers have reportedly turned their sights to former Oregon State head coach Pat Casey for the opening, according to Kendall Rodgers of D1Baseball.com.

The Gators bounced out of their Gainesville Regional after two embarrassing losses to USF and South Alabama. Despite the rough finish, Florida finished the 2021 season 38-22 with a 17-13 record in SEC play.

O’Sullivan’s program is set to lose a slew of top players to the MLB draft like outfielders Jacob Young and Jud Fabian, pitchers Tommy Mace and Jack Leftwich, as well as Nathan Hickey. But Florida has usually done a strong job of reloading where the team doesn’t skip a beat the following year.

This trio of Gators earned SEC All-Tournament honors

Jacob Young, Nate Hickey and Sterlin Thompson all earned All-Tournament Team honors for their performances in Hoover this week.

Though the Gators didn’t come out on top this weekend in Hoover at the SEC Tournament, their performance certainly drew some attention. Florida went 3-1 en route to the semifinals, and that included a 13-1 run-rule victory over the No. 8 team in the country in Mississippi State.

It shouldn’t be surprising that, aside from tournament champion Arkansas and runner-up Tennessee, UF has the most players on the All-Tournament Team with three.

When talking about Florida’s play this week, the first player that comes to mind is Jacob Young, who had perhaps the hottest bat in Hoover. Among players with five or more at-bats, Young finished with the highest batting average at .471 (8-for-17). He also had two home runs, a double and five RBI.

As the leadoff hitter, the Gators will need Young to stay hot heading into regional play next weekend. But luckily, the two-hole hitter isn’t a bad option, either. Nate Hickey made the switch this week from catcher to third base, a move coach Kevin O’Sullivan said would’ve been made earlier in the season had Mac Guscette not suffered an injury. Hickey shined at third defensively, and he hit a homer on a 6-of-14 week at the plate. He was rightly given a spot on the All-Tournament Team alongside Young for his efforts.

Last (but certainly not least) true freshman Sterlin Thompson continues to impress down the home stretch of the season. He’s been one of Florida’s most consistent batters this season, and he hit a homer to go with two doubles and five RBI in Hoover. In the win over MSU, he hit two extra-base hits, and in the victory against Alabama he went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Though UF’s run only resulted in the No. 15 overall national seed, its performance should be a confidence-building one heading into NCAA regionals.

A look at the Big Ten basketball steals leaders in 2020-21

In the latest installment of this series looking back at the best of the Big Ten from last season, I will be reviewing the leaders in set…

Despite frequent struggles last season on the offensive side of the ball, the Wisconsin Badgers played solid team defense throughout most of last year. Two players who exemplified that were guards Brad Davison and Jonathan Davis, who both made the top 15 in steals for this season. It was exciting to see two Badger players create turnovers at such a high-level last season, especially Davis, who was playing limited minutes as a true freshman.
